tartalom: + 1 We did not find any description of whether the miners, 200 of them, volunteered for the 5-year scientific observation, having no idea how well they would do. After a thorough medical examination, 400 healthy subjects were selected for the test. Based on experience, the basic premise was that 5 years of hard physical work is very taxing for the body, so miners develop more locomotor complaints after so many years, the number of partial disabilities increases and the rate of illnesses is higher. It is a well-known fact that musculoskeletal diseases are very common among people living unhealthy and/or sedentary lifestyles, as well as people who perform heavy physical work. In this regard, numerous investigations were carried out both at home and abroad in the 1960s and 1970s. What did they want to prove? At the same time, the doctors in Hévíz believed that balneotherapy (performed with water) and physiotherapeutic (performed with movement) cures in Hévíz are useful in preventing such diseases. Preventive treatment can reduce the risk of developing locomotor diseases, workers will spend less time in sick bays, and the cost of their medical treatments will be lower. In 1976, 400 miners were found to be healthy. 200 of them were included in the control group, those who had not been on a medical holiday in Hévíz for 5 years, had not received any health-preserving treatment anywhere. However, the other 200 lucky miners spent 3 weeks in the spa town every year, at the cost of their vacation, where they swam in the warm water of Lake Hévíz, received massage and mud treatments, took part in physical therapy, and received additional treatments. The preventive cures in Hévíz were not only useful and enjoyable for the 200 miners, but the research also ended with very positive results. After 5 years, in 1981, at the then Hévíz State Spa Hospital, it was established that among the 200 miners in the "untreated" control group, significantly more people became disabled and spent significantly more time in the infirmary than those who received preventive treatment. The health status of the regularly treated group clearly remains much better despite the same and equally demanding hard physical work as the control group. But this was not enough proof of the effectiveness of typical Hévíz medicinal water cures! In 1988, another study was conducted at the Hévíz State Spa Hospital, now involving 227 volunteers. In the 1980s, they tried to convince employers why it was worth sending their employees on medical leave. In the case of the 227 people, they were interested in the number of days spent in the patient population. However, the extent of this can mean a significant loss of manpower/a decrease in productivity for a company. They selected 227 patients who were treated with the same locomotor complaint, but 107 of them received medication only, while 120 were treated with a complex spa treatment repeated every year. An astonishing result was achieved in the examined period! The 120 patients who received regular spa treatments spent a total of 885 days in the hospital. In contrast, the 107 members of the control group spent 5,430 days! That's six times the number! This is such a significant difference that it had to be recognized that spa treatments regenerate people much more effectively. Today, it is considered natural that preventive and recreational complex cures and health programs are important not only for those who perform heavy physical work. In Europe, more and more people are participating in so-called manager cures, which serve to regenerate the physical and mental performance of managers who are overburdened with mental work. These are periods of two to three weeks, during which the participants run a lot, swim, eat healthy, and relax, which in many cases includes a digital detox (a period without smart devices). lead: Do you know how old is the bath in Hévíz? Do you know how the old spa building looked like? Discover the history of the Hévíz Lakebath from the beginning to the present!

tartalom: + 1 The first rectangular bathhouse, consisting of two buildings, was built in 1795 by the landowner Count I. Festetics György. The news on the benefits of the medicinal water reached Vienna in 1801, and the presence of the white water lilies in the lake was already mentioned in a memoir in 1818. Additional Indian species were planted to these water lilies in 1898. In 1858, afforestation around the lake, modernisation of the spa buildings and development of the lakeside buildings for guests started. In the centre of the lake, the male and female mirror baths (baths surrounded with cabins) were located, but many people still used the sluice of Hévíz, which was wider that time, for swimming. Spa Hévíz in the 1910s and 1920s From 1905, leaseholder Reichl Vencel did his best to develop Hévíz into an international spa town.  The former bathhouse was replaced by a domed building, and it is also due to him that a number of modern accommodation and restaurants, and the „Cure Salon”, essential to the health resort, were built. In 1907, on the site of the old built bridge, a roofed bridge was erected and the characteristic two-towered main entrance was completed. In the same year, the Sanatorium and Spa Hotel of Hévíz was built. In 1911, the town received the „spa resort-like settlement” title. In Hévíz it doesn't matter what season it is: it is always bathing time! This is a proven fact! Did you know? Tired muscles, cold toes, and stress dissolve in warm water! In the thermal spa pools, you can enjoy the hot steam all day and night at 36°C. Wherever you go, sooner or later (sooner is the better) you're bound to stumble upon a poolside. Melt yourself out with the power of steam! As soon as winter sets in, the sauna stones start to glow. Honey, fragrant, coconut, beer infusions, and refreshing saunas await you. You don't have to start with the 90°C Finnish sauna, instead start with the aroma or steam cabin and relax with the power of nature! A water experience in a different way! Ever been paddling in winter? Have you ever paddled at all? Only here, and only in winter, you can experience it on the Hévíz Stream. Not only the experience is special, but the landscape is also a sight to behold! Which is why only a very limited number of paddlers can paddle on a stretch of about 10 km. If you want to go on a canoe trip, you should book early for this programme! But good news: it is safe for children too and even recommended for beginners! In fact, zigzagging is even more fun. Forget the water! Warm water and steam are not the only ways to warm up. Explore the so called ‘Vadlán-lik (Wild Girl’s Cave) or find out yourself if the basalt organs really play some music or not. Finally, make a selfie from the top of one of the lookout towers of the Keszthely Hills, or from the Castle of Szigliget,with Lake Balaton and the basalt hills in the background! Catch fire! You arrived in the city, and it’s raining all day.  Don't stay home! It's open now as well! If you like challenges and moving a lot The Adrenalin Arena in Alsópáhok is the perfect choice for you. The Arena is fun for adults and for children as well. For the less adventurous, Keszthely's Helikon Castle Museum is the place to visit. In the castle you can spend days, since there are six different exhibitions waiting for you to explore them all. You may also find some other thermal baths in the area as well filled with slides and many pools. You're here to relax, not to jump!  Stay in the hotel and head to the spa. There's nothing better than one or more pampering sessions, a nice relaxing massage, a scented bath or some beauty treatments. Don’t forget to eat! Morning, noon, evening, anytime - have a steaming drink; tea, coffee, mulled wine, punch, hot chocolate and/or eat hot cream soups, pancakes, roasts, or the finest lángos in the city. cím: The Forgotten Synagogue of Hévíz – Memories of a Bygone Era

lead: Few people know that in the last century, a grand synagogue stood in what was once Hévízfürdő. It served not only as a sacred place for the local Jewish community but also for the many visiting spa guests. Although the building is no longer visible today, the city still preserves its memory.

tartalom: + 1 The Birth of a House of Prayer – Hévíz’s Religious Diversity In the early 20th century, many Jewish guests came to Hévíz to enjoy the healing effects of the lake. As religious visitors needed a place to pray, a modest prayer house was built in 1905 next to the lake's outflow channel, near Ignác Lusztig’s guesthouse called “Jerusalem.” However, the small building quickly became too cramped as the spa resort grew in popularity. (Sharp-eyed readers may spot the prayer house's location on this 1925 map) By the late 1920s, the growing community and increasing number of spa visitors made it necessary to build a larger, more representative synagogue. One of the key initiators of the new building was Dr. Adolf Kertész, a lawyer from Budapest who was a devoted supporter of Hévíz’s development and religious life. He submitted a request to Prince Tasziló Festetics II, who generously provided land for the synagogue free of charge. Fundraising began in 1929, and in 1930 the Israelite Synagogue Association of Hévízfürdő was established. It operated fully independently but functioned as a branch of the Keszthely Jewish community. Construction was completed in 1933 at a cost of approximately 20,000 pengő. The town also contributed: the municipal council of Hévízszentandrás donated 1,000 pengő, recognizing the importance of boosting tourism. 1933 – A Ceremonial Inauguration in a Growing Town The Hévíz synagogue was officially inaugurated on July 2, 1933. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Lajos Glück, chief rabbi of Keszthely, who gave the opening address. Distinguished figures from the spa town and local community were also present, including Sándor Stern, the synagogue’s first trustee, and Mór Weisz, president of the local Jewish community. The event attracted great interest and was significant not only for locals but for visiting spa guests as well. Caught in the Storm of History Hévíz was not spared the tragedies of World War II. In 1944, the Jewish community was deported, and many never returned. Several members from Hévíz were taken to Auschwitz. According to records, Dr. Vilmos Schulhof, Hévíz’s spa physician, was also among the Holocaust victims. Dr. Schulhof played a vital role not only as a doctor but also as a community leader. Many of the synagogue’s former visitors and supporters perished in concentration camps, including Mór Weisz, Sándor Stern, and other local residents. After the war, the abandoned synagogue remained empty and slowly fell into ruin. By the late 1960s, it was in a dilapidated state and was eventually demolished in 1977. For decades, nothing stood on the site, as if a piece of history had vanished without a trace. Preserving the Memory Fortunately, the city of Hévíz did not forget its past. In 2000, a memorial was erected on the site of the former synagogue. Its design recalls the original building and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. The plans were developed with the help of city officials and local historians, and Chief Rabbi Tamás Raj delivered the speech at the unveiling ceremony. This quiet yet powerful memorial site continues to invite visitors to pay tribute to those who were once an integral part of Hévíz’s community. Brought Back to Life – Virtually Though the synagogue no longer stands, today it is possible to explore it through a virtual tour. lead: When seaside vacations became fashionable in the second half of the 19th century, not only the etiquette but also the attire of bathing was strictly regulated. Wearing a swimsuit meant covering up, not showing off. Yet over the following decades, the baggy skirts disappeared, and swimsuits slowly started to resemble what we know today.

tartalom: + 1 Since when do we go to the beach to "swim and sunbathe"? Bathing became a trend in Europe—especially in England and France—from the mid-19th century. Brighton, Biarritz, Scheveningen: these places saw the birth of the first “bathing fashions.” Although trends didn’t spread nearly as fast as they do today via Insta posts and social media, Hungary wasn’t far behind the Western bathing culture. The first bathing house on Lake Balaton opened in 1864 in Keszthely (for men), followed by similar structures in Balatonfüred and Siófok. These were more like changing cabins built onto piers, with separate facilities for men and women. Entering the water was guided more by etiquette and medical advice than by fun. We can proudly say that therapeutic spas like Hévíz introduced bath cabins much earlier, especially upon medical recommendation. In Hévíz, the first bathhouse on stilts was already built in 1795—meaning that bathers came to Lake Hévíz even before Lake Balaton became popular.   Long Skirts and Puffy Trousers But back to our main topic—what did our predecessors actually consider "swimwear"? Primarily, it was an outfit designed for walking along the beach. Going into the water or sunbathing was out of the question. The seashore was mainly recommended for the benefit of salty sea air. The beach attire covered nearly every part of the body, and parasols were a must-have for ladies, as tanned skin was not appropriate in aristocratic and bourgeois circles. Simply put, it was considered too “common.” Some, of course, couldn’t resist the temptation of the water. For them, swimming wasn’t even an option—they were lucky if they didn’t get too wet in their "bathing" outfits, which looked something like this: Long skirt – down to the ankles, to hide the legs Baggy trousers underneath – for modesty Waist belt or drawstring – to keep the dress in place in the water Long-sleeved blouse – often with a collar Hat or head covering – to protect from the sun Materials: flannel, linen, or thick wool. These fabrics held their shape well when dry—but became extremely heavy when wet! Light colors were typically chosen, since the many layers already made the outfits warm enough—dark colors would’ve made things even worse.   Subtle Modernization, or the Era When Calves No Longer Had to Be Hidden By the end of the 19th century, expectations began to change. As more people ventured into the water, skirts became shorter—now only just below the knees—so the trousers underneath also became shorter and less baggy. Eventually, separate skirts and blouses were replaced by a single-piece tunic-style garment for simplicity and safety. The new swimwear often featured large collars and sailor-style motifs. Colors were mostly navy blue or black, often with stripes. The darker colors helped ensure the thinner garments remained opaque when wet. In the 1910s–1920s, swimsuits began shrinking rapidly Starting in the 1910s, swimming gained popularity—especially among women. Swimwear fashion followed this shift toward practicality, led by figures like Australian swimming champion and actress Annette Kellerman. In 1907, she was even arrested in the U.S. for wearing a one-piece, body-hugging swimsuit. That event only added fuel to the fire, accelerating the modern transformation of swimwear, which coincided with the rise of women’s emancipation. Sleeveless tops appeared almost out of nowhere (even in casual wear), and swimsuits were sometimes one-piece, sometimes two-piece. Trousers were shortened to mid-thigh, and eventually to much shorter lengths. The resulting scandal led to enforced swimsuit regulations, including mandatory length measurements—sometimes checked with tape measures! Wool still dominated in materials, but now with thinner weaves. Large hats were replaced by headscarves or swim caps, not for sun protection but to keep hair in place. Still, the suits remained heavy (and dark), especially when wet.   Elastic Fabric Revolutionizes Swimwear in the 1920s–30s This change wasn’t driven primarily by new attitudes, but by a new invention: Lastex, a rubber-threaded textile. Thanks to this material, swimsuits in the 1920s became form-fitting. Skirts disappeared completely, and necklines and backlines grew bolder. The elastic fabric allowed for snug-fitting, stretchy, and—most importantly—fast-drying swimsuits. Less fabric was needed, and color variety exploded on the beaches. Swimwear became not only practical but sexy, too. Film stars of the 1930s—like Jean Harlow or Greta Garbo—graced magazine covers in their swimsuits. Swimwear Fashion at Lake Balaton and in Hévíz Hungarian beach towns like those along Lake Balaton and Hévíz also adopted international swimwear trends. By the late 1920s, women were wearing shorter, one-piece swimsuits, and men wore tank-top-style suits. At Lake Hévíz, the clothing remained more conservative due to its medicinal purpose, but sportier swimsuits also became increasingly popular. What Came Next? After World War II, everything changed. lead: Spring is here once more, and finally we can enjoy ourselves in the fresh air again. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for bicycle tours, however, cycling is a sport that you can pursuit in any season.

tartalom: + 1 What’s more, cycling is more than a sport! While cycling, you have the possibility to discover the world on two wheels while you are relaxing. Not to mention that cycling is also environmentally friendly and healthy as well! The bicycle road around Lake Balaton has been completed for 15 years. Cyclist have already cycled around the Lake more than once, but they are also ready for new challenges. Cycling became so popular in the past years that the bicycle roads are as crowded as the highways, especially in the summer season. The Hungarian Cyclist Association have been working relentlessly on the BB365 project and its results are already used by every biker. What is BB365 exactly? It is an abbreviation which stands for Balaton Bike 365, meaning that by Lake Balaton it is possible to enjoy bicycle services all year around. Thanks to the project, sign boards were placed out which signal 800 kilometres of bicycle roads in total, four times the length of the complete Lake Balaton bicycle round. 45 different thematic routes were also created, which are also noted by boards. For example, the routes including the Festetics Heritage are red coloured. Circle tours always have letter combinations. The three-digit numbers always mean local routes, while two-digit numbers mean national roads. One-digit roads usually connect to international roads. Be cautious though: the new signs don’t always signal separate bicycle roads since they can also point to appointed car roads or dirt roads too. The BB365 webpage and application are perfect for seeing these roads as well. The BB365 application was awarded ‘The Application of the Year’ award by the Hungarian Marketing Association last year. Cycling fans are able to plan their routes around Lake Balaton in 7 languages. Due to the project, three bicycle centres were also created in Keszthely, in Balatonfüred and in Balatonföldvár. In these centres, bicycles can be rented, or guided tour can be also booked. Fixing services will be also available in the future. For what the BB365 application is good for? Just like in Google, you will be able to make a cycling tour plan, however, in the BB365 app you will only see the routes that you can also cycle on. You will immediately see the quality of the road (bicycle road, car road, dirt road) and the altitudes as well. You are also able to filter your search based on recommended routes if you for example travel with your family or you would like to cycle with a mountain bike. You are also able to rate the routes and recommend it to others. With the pictograms, you can see the sights of the region like castles, viewpoints, museums or churches. Based on the short details given of the sights, you can easily plan where to stop during your trip. You can also search accommodations, restaurants, service points or spots to take free water. So it's time to give you an overview of where and how much you can swim in the Hévíz area this summer after the adventure parks.

A black poi indicates the Hévíz Tófürdő and beach Red dots show the classic beaches on the Balaton shore In the place of burgundy pois, there are adventure parks and adventure baths The blue pois are lakes where you can't swim, but you can fish instead :) Let's see which are the classic beaches next to Lake Balaton. There are roughly 7+2 beaches near Hévíz that are very popular among guests. Keszthely City Beach | Keszthely Libás Beach | Alsógyenes Lidó Beach | Gyenesdiás Play Beach | Vonyarcvashegyi Lido Beach | Balatongyörök Beach | Balatonberény Beach + Dog Beach in Keszthely and Naturist Beach in Balatonberény   It is typical of the above beaches that you can go for a walk or even take a bath outside of the high season. You can use the playgrounds and sports fields, but the buffets and restrooms are only open during the beach season. In the late spring period, you should expect that renovations, weeding, flower planting, and toys are being renovated, but by the beginning of June, almost all beaches can be visited. There are entrance tickets, where they start collecting from June 1, and where they start collecting from the beginning of the school holidays. The opening hours - as long as you have to buy a full price ticket - are usually between 8:00 and 18:00, but in many places you can buy an evening swimming ticket before closing, which is cheaper and usually after 6 or 7, entry is free. Most beaches have student and pensioner discounts, family tickets or weekly passes can also be purchased. In terms of accessibility, a common feature of the beaches in the area is that they are easy to find. By bicycle, the cash desks are almost within reach of the Balaton bicycle path, and by car, of course, you can park for free next to every beach. Moreover, with the exception of the dog beach and the Libás beach, all other beaches are close to the local train station, so if you can, you can even go by train.   Lake Hévíz, as a uniqueness, is a spa, lake spa and beach spa all in one Unique in the world, Lake Hévíz combines thermal spas and beach spas in such a way that none of them really exist. Due to its uniqueness, you can bathe in the natural thermal spring all year round, and thanks to the covered parts, you can enjoy the experience of warm water even in pouring rain or snow. Depending on the weather, in the spring, usually in May, the beach area opens even earlier, where you can enjoy the pleasures of water around 30°C or even warmer before the Balaton beach season. The children's pools are only filled in mid-June, as they have heated normal water. From the point of view that you can swim in a real, natural, warm water lake and relax and sunbathe on its shore, it is more like a beach, but based on the services, opening hours and prices based on medicinal water, it can be classified more like a thermal spa. You definitely have to try it once, because it is really unique and special, completely different from all the usual beaches and adventure pools! Adventure baths and slide park Near Hévíz, we have to write about 3 major thermal and adventure baths and a slide park. Closer to Hévíz is the Kehida Thermal Bath in Kehidakustány, many people also visit the Karos Spa complex in Zalakaros, and Zalaszentgrót also has a thermal and adventure bath. Perhaps a little further, in Zalaegerszeg there is an Aquacity and slide park. The common feature of the first three thermal spas is that their indoor pools are open all year round, but in the summer season they also open their outdoor beach with adventure park, slides and a large green surface to the public. These baths, although they cannot be called classic beaches, can be visited regardless of the weather, since even if we cannot use the outdoor experiences, the indoor pools are still open. Another important feature they have in common is that they have pools with medicinal water and heated normal water pools. Aquacity, located next to the last-mentioned Zalaegerszeg, only operates in the summer, during the school holidays. It does not have an indoor bath, only outdoor pools and numerous slides, among which all ages can find their favorite. At the same time, just like the Balaton beaches, this adventure bath is only visited in nice, summer weather. The ticket prices of the spas and beaches do not reflect the quality of the services! On the slightly more expensive beaches, the extra program options and extra experience elements provide the basis for a higher price category, while the slightly cheaper beaches are typically smaller, more family-friendly, and offer fewer but equally high-quality services. In addition, all the classic beaches listed here (except for dogs and naturists) have Blue Wave certification and are multiple category winners (child-friendly beach, sporty beach, green beach). The different types of ticket prices mean that entrance tickets to most beaches in the pre-summer season, in June, are cheaper than in July and August.

Of course, it is best to scroll through the hotel's photo gallery, because the photos tell a lot not only about the possible spa experiences, but also about the atmosphere of the place. tartalom: + 1 Hévíz has been waiting for the worthy conclusion of the investment for a long time The matter of the old bus stop and the investment in the area of Kölcsey Street has been dragging on in the spa town for many years. As Bálint Nagy, Member of Parliament and Secretary of State for Transport, said at the closing ceremony of the project: the process started in 2019, with the announcement of the then winning GINOP tender, and it just came to an end this weekend. The government then approved the Hévíz development project with a grant of 1.2 billion forints, with the aim of creating a central square worthy of the city's reputation and tourist role near the Lake Spa. However, the implementation did not go according to plan. The work process was slowed down and made more difficult by several factors. In recent years, it has been necessary to modify both the professional content and the budget of the original plans on several occasions. Over the years, the demands of residents, guests and entrepreneurs for a dignified conclusion to the protracted works have increased. Member of Parliament Bálint Nagy highlighted: The Hévíz main square project is an excellent example of how, if there is truly a common will and true cooperation, even the most impossible situations can be solved. This positive example of cooperation also gives hope that the Lake Spa developments that will soon be launched will also be successful.   In his speech, Péter Naszádos, Mayor of Hévíz, emphasized the power of cooperation and joint work. The municipality considers the implementation of this very important investment for the city as a victory, as well as the fact that the city has closed six tenders from state, EU and its own sources in the past 9 months. The aim of the development was to create a livable, modern, community and tourist-valuable environment in Hévíz. Fountain, spacious square, elegant paving and vegetation The municipality terminated the contract with the previous contractor of the now handed over square in 2023. The new public procurement - which took place in three months - was won by the local Possibuild Kft. The investment, which was launched from EU funds, ultimately had to be supplemented with government support. As part of the works, the old bus station building was demolished, and an event space was created in its place with a fountain, sculptures, green islands, street furniture and bicycle racks. The square was equipped with a music pavilion and technical structures that will enable the holding of larger events and festivals. The work of the Munkácsy Award-winning sculptor Ferenc Farkas, a pair of full-length bronze statues depicting Count György I. Festetics and Count György II. Festetics, has been placed in front of the summer entrance to the Hévíz Lake Baths.   In order to shade the event space, solar sails will be installed in the near future. The new event space in Hévíz will have a festival atmosphere on the first weekend! To the delight of the residents and guests, the city of Hévíz is organizing a large-scale “space-occupying” festival titled “The Space Belongs to Us!”. On the morning of July 18, professional performances will be held in the Town Hall’s Ceremonial Hall, and various outdoor exhibitions will be on display on the square. In the evening, a BIKINI concert, laser and light show, and DJ Belo await guests looking to have fun and/or get nostalgic in the area of the former bus stop and Rizling Platz. The concerts will continue on Saturday and Sunday. There will be music, rock ballet, soloists and even a folklore show. The event will be accompanied by a food and craft fair on all three days.
