tartalom: + 1 Hévíz has been waiting for the worthy conclusion of the investment for a long time The matter of the old bus stop and the investment in the area of Kölcsey Street has been dragging on in the spa town for many years. As Bálint Nagy, Member of Parliament and Secretary of State for Transport, said at the closing ceremony of the project: the process started in 2019, with the announcement of the then winning GINOP tender, and it just came to an end this weekend. The government then approved the Hévíz development project with a grant of 1.2 billion forints, with the aim of creating a central square worthy of the city's reputation and tourist role near the Lake Spa. However, the implementation did not go according to plan. The work process was slowed down and made more difficult by several factors. In recent years, it has been necessary to modify both the professional content and the budget of the original plans on several occasions. Over the years, the demands of residents, guests and entrepreneurs for a dignified conclusion to the protracted works have increased. Member of Parliament Bálint Nagy highlighted: The Hévíz main square project is an excellent example of how, if there is truly a common will and true cooperation, even the most impossible situations can be solved. This positive example of cooperation also gives hope that the Lake Spa developments that will soon be launched will also be successful.   In his speech, Péter Naszádos, Mayor of Hévíz, emphasized the power of cooperation and joint work. The municipality considers the implementation of this very important investment for the city as a victory, as well as the fact that the city has closed six tenders from state, EU and its own sources in the past 9 months. The aim of the development was to create a livable, modern, community and tourist-valuable environment in Hévíz. Fountain, spacious square, elegant paving and vegetation The municipality terminated the contract with the previous contractor of the now handed over square in 2023. The new public procurement - which took place in three months - was won by the local Possibuild Kft. The investment, which was launched from EU funds, ultimately had to be supplemented with government support. As part of the works, the old bus station building was demolished, and an event space was created in its place with a fountain, sculptures, green islands, street furniture and bicycle racks. The square was equipped with a music pavilion and technical structures that will enable the holding of larger events and festivals. The work of the Munkácsy Award-winning sculptor Ferenc Farkas, a pair of full-length bronze statues depicting Count György I. Festetics and Count György II. Festetics, has been placed in front of the summer entrance to the Hévíz Lake Baths.   In order to shade the event space, solar sails will be installed in the near future. The new event space in Hévíz will have a festival atmosphere on the first weekend! To the delight of the residents and guests, the city of Hévíz is organizing a large-scale “space-occupying” festival titled “The Space Belongs to Us!”. On the morning of July 18, professional performances will be held in the Town Hall’s Ceremonial Hall, and various outdoor exhibitions will be on display on the square. In the evening, a BIKINI concert, laser and light show, and DJ Belo await guests looking to have fun and/or get nostalgic in the area of the former bus stop and Rizling Platz. The concerts will continue on Saturday and Sunday. There will be music, rock ballet, soloists and even a folklore show. The event will be accompanied by a food and craft fair on all three days. The shade sails now offer protection from the sun along the final uncovered section of the pedestrian route between Kölcsey Street and the Thermal Lake, ensuring a more pleasant walking experience. The project was funded entirely by a non-repayable grant from the European Union, as part of the Interreg Central Europe programme and in partnership with international municipalities. The BeReady initiative focuses on mitigating the urban heat island effect caused by asphalt and concrete surfaces in Central European towns and cities.   Several other infrastructure and recreational development projects are also underway in Hévíz. Among them is the construction of a bypass road near Nemesbük, which will facilitate the movement of agricultural vehicles from surrounding areas, helping to ease traffic congestion within the town. The city administration remains committed to implementing projects that improve quality of life and make Hévíz an even more sustainable and attractive destination for both residents and visitors.

We asked Beáta Süténé Tüttő about this fantastic and unique board game. Basics – what is the game about? What is the name of the game, and what kind of atmosphere does it promise at first glance? The name of the game is Hévíz a GyógyíTó. Even the title suggests relaxation, healing, and a touch of playful humor – exactly the kind of atmosphere that characterizes the town of Hévíz and the unique world of Lake Hévíz. What is the story and theme of the game? The game is based on the healing treatments carried out at Lake Hévíz and at various locations throughout the town, such as therapies for musculoskeletal conditions and rehabilitation after injuries. As players move across the board, they take part in elements of the traditional healing cure: bathing in the lake, mud treatments, weight bath therapy, and other complementary treatments. In this way, the game presents the complex therapeutic packages of Hévíz in a playful format. Who is the game recommended for? It is an excellent choice as a gift, a souvenir, for winter evenings, or for family and friends’ gatherings. Recommended from the age of 16 for anyone who enjoys light, cheerful board games. Where is it available and how much does it cost? The price of the game is 8,000 HUF, and the proceeds are used for charitable purposes. Soon it will also be available at the Hévíz Tourinform Office with game rules in English, German, and Russian. Will there be a sequel? Yes! By Christmas 2026, a children’s board game titled “The Wildlife of Lake Hévíz” is planned, and work on it has already begun.   Technical basics of the game How many players can play? Minimum 2, maximum 8 players. How many spaces are on the board? There are a total of 59 spaces, 25 of which include tasks. Gameplay – what does it feel like to play? Is it easy to learn the rules? Yes, very easy. The rules are quick to understand and do not require long explanations. How long does one game take? Approximately 15–20 minutes, so several rounds can fit into one evening. What type of game is it? It is entirely luck-based, requiring no strategic thinking – which makes it relaxing and stress-free. Is there cooperation or competition? The goal is the same for every player: to reach the finish line, in other words, to heal. If only two people are playing, it is recommended to use a special die that includes only the numbers 1 and 2. Experience factor – what does the game offer? What emotions does it evoke during play? Lots of laughter. It is a light, cheerful game that brings relaxation rather than tension. What kind of conversations does it inspire? Those who have already taken part in real Hévíz treatments often relive their experiences, share stories, and recall memories. Is it replayable? Yes, very much so. Players do not land on task spaces in every game, so each round offers a slightly different experience. Design and quality Who created the game? The questions and gameplay were designed by Beáta Tüttő. The graphics were created by Nóra Aradvári, and the prototype player figures were designed by Liza Hanna Szegődi. tartalom: + 1 While swimming in Lake Hévíz, or simply floating in its soothing waters, a thought inevitably crosses the bather’s mind: what might be happening beneath us right now, what lies hidden inthe depths below the surface? This invisible world, the mystery of the unknown, has stirred human imagination for thousands of years. But what do we actually know about the underwater world of the lake? A historical turning point that changed everything… By the late 1970s, the previously steady and peaceful development of Hévíz was disrupted by an unexpected and increasingly intense conflict. This was the so-called “Hévíz versus Nyirád”debate, the roots of which date back to the 1950s. During the forced industrialisation following World War II, heavy industry as well as mineral extraction were given priority, andbauxite mining became increasingly significant in the karst regions of Transdanubia –including the catchment area of Lake Balaton.Initially, mining took place above the karst water level, but it soon extended deeper and deeper. At the time, no one suspected that the consequences would one day affect Lake Hévíz.However, the impacts gradually became evident: the significant decline in the lake’s water yield observed in the 1970s could no longer be explained by natural fluctuations. It was aclear warning sign that called for urgent intervention.The investigation into the effects of bauxite mining and karst water extraction in Nyirád was not merely an attempt to resolve an environmental conflict, but the beginning of a scientificdiscovery process that fundamentally reshaped our understanding of Lake Hévíz. Research launched in 1972 revealed that the lake is fed by deep karst waters, not from a single source but from a complex cave system beneath it. Its water supply originates from distant areas and is directly connected to mining activities in the Nyirád region.       The divers of Lake Hévíz back then….   In order to refine earlier, approximate data, divers were also involved in mapping the depths of the lake. This step marked the beginning of cave exploration in Hévíz, as it was the first attempt to directly explore the source of the lake and understand its structure. As the culmination of the project, on 10 February 1975, two members of the Amphora Diving Club, István Plózer and Lajos Csávosi, reached the spring cavern—often referred to as a crater. But what do we know today, more than 50 years after this major breakthrough? Nearly five decades after the first explorations, research has gained new momentum. Following consultations between the nature conservation experts of the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate and the Hévíz St. Andrew Rheumatology Hospital and Thermal Bath, a new phase of investigations into the cave system of Lake Hévíz has begun.This time, the aim is to carry out geodetically precise measurements of five additional smaller caves that had already been identified fifty years ago during the exploration of the spring cave, in the area beneath the so-called “gossip benches”. On 17 March 2026, two divers from the Balaton Uplands National Park—responsible for the management of Lake Hévíz—descended to the entrances of the caves. Their task was to determine the exact positions (geographical coordinates) of the cave entrances using geodetic-grade GNSS equipment operated by experts in a boat on the surface, aided by buoys placed in the depths. However, carrying out the measurements proved to be far from simple. The lake’s water system is fed by waters of different origins: warm thermal water rising from the depths and cooler karst water flowing in laterally. The processes taking place below are not static—the water is in constant motion, with currents varying in both direction and intensity. During the investigation, persistent winds further complicated the coordinated work of the teams operating above and below the surface. Despite these challenges, the mission was successfully completed, and the divers also captured spectacular footage of the caves.       …and now. Lake Hévíz was first granted protected status in 1993, and in 2006 the originally designated conservation area was further expanded. One of the key objectives of the current research is toensure that, based on precise measurements, all known caves of the lake can be officially registered in the national cave registry, thereby strengthening the site’s scientific andconservation significance. The end? After all this, it is fair to ask: are there still new chapters to come, or have we reached the end of the story? Perhaps the most intriguing question is not what we have discovered so far—butwhat might still await us beneath the surface. One thing, however, is certain: the future—whether viewed in a narrower or broader terms—will bring changes that will inevitably shape this unique natural system. The story of Lake Hévíz is therefore far from finished. The ceremonial award presentation of the prestigious recognition took place on May 1, on the Day of the City of Hévíz. The jubilee, now 20th edition of the City Wine selection was held in an excellent atmosphere, where the finest wines of the Zala wine region competed against each other. This year, 12 wineries from Zala entered a total of 24 wines into the competition. Based on the joint decision of the social and professional jury, the prestigious title was awarded to a white wine that will represent Hévíz for one year at city events and tourism occasions. The coordinator of the event was Szabolcs Pöltl, while the professional jury was chaired by Krisztián Kielmayer. Once again, the focus of the event was on the wineries and wine cellars of the Zala region. To the delight of the organizers, a large number of entries were submitted in response to the call, clearly demonstrating the strength and unity of the region’s wine community. Year after year, the Zala wine region produces an increasing number of outstanding quality wines that rightfully enhance the reputation of the region. The title of Wine of the City of Hévíz 2026 was ultimately awarded to the 2025 Cserszegi Fűszeres by Romsics Bence Borprojekt. With its distinctive aromas and freshness, the winning wine will be a worthy representative of the city of Hévíz throughout the coming year.

lead: On one of the hottest days of the summer season, representatives of the profession gathered for a ceremonial event at the Hévíz Lake Bath. Nine local institutions and hotels received the Hévíz Traditional Cure certification, guaranteeing guests the highest level of authentic therapeutic quality for the next two years.

tartalom: + 1 The Hévíz Traditional Cure certification system was established by the town of Hévíz in 2015. The initiative aims to officially accredit service providers that offer classic therapies based on the local medicinal thermal water. The rigorous professional criteria were developed by a committee of renowned physicians. Strict Criteria for Maximum Quality To obtain the trademark, institutions must undergo a comprehensive review every two years. A fundamental requirement for certification is full compliance with all seven of the following criteria: Certified medicinal-water bathing: The institution has its own thermal pool supplied with Hévíz medicinal water. Regulated pool temperature: The water temperature is between 25 and 38 °C, while bathing time is determined by a medical specialist as part of an individually tailored treatment plan. Access to the Lake Bath: Patients are provided with the opportunity to bathe in the Hévíz medicinal lake, including at an external location if necessary. Hévíz mud treatments: Hévíz medicinal mud packs or mud baths are available on site. Precisely controlled mud packs: The temperature of the mud may not exceed 42 °C, and the duration of the treatment is also determined by a medical specialist. Weight-bath therapy: The institution offers the traditional weight-bath treatment among its services. Controlled weight-bath parameters: The pool water is maintained at 34–36 °C; the duration of the treatment, the amount and distribution of the weights, and the suspension points are prescribed by a medical specialist. The purpose of the strict inspection process is to ensure that guests can be confident that whichever accredited facility they choose, they will receive the same outstanding and consistent level of quality. In this way, the fundamental requirements of Hévíz therapeutic medicine—with a history spanning more than 220 years and now recognised as a Hungarikum—are guaranteed at every certified service provider. Expert Audits and the Award Recipients The 2026 certification process was coordinated by Hévízi Turisztikai Nonprofit Kft., the organisation responsible for managing the trademark. On-site audits were carried out by an expert committee consisting of renowned chief rheumatologists: Dr Gábor Domokos (Hévíz St Andrew Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases and Spa), Dr Veronika Moll (Hotel Európa Fit), and Dr Géza Kurth (NaturMed Hotel Carbona). In the children’s creations, the lake and its surroundings come to life through Minecraft’s characteristic blocks. As part of the programme, the campers also attended an approximately 20-minute presentation about the town, given by Böröczné Bolla Krisztina. During the presentation, the children had the opportunity to learn more about Hévíz and its local treasures. One of the camp’s creative projects was to recreate Lake Hévíz in Minecraft. The result brings together one of Hévíz’s best-known symbols with a digital environment familiar to the children. Using Minecraft in this way is not new to Creative Science programmes. In other projects, participants also explore and survey real-life locations, then use their experiences to recreate them together in a virtual environment. First-hand discovery, planning, creativity and teamwork all play an important role in this approach. The creations inspired by Lake Hévíz are a great example of how a world-famous digital game can be combined with discovering local treasures. From the children’s perspective, Hévíz became more than just a town they visited and a place with a unique natural treasure: it also became somewhere they could recreate in the virtual world using their own ideas. Our thanks go to the Creative Science organisers for the initiative and for bringing the programme to life. Special thanks and congratulations also go to the children for their enthusiastic, imaginative and dedicated work! It is wonderful to see Lake Hévíz and its surroundings come to life block by block in the world of Minecraft. The restriction applies to the Thermal Lake side of Széchenyi Street between Ady Street and Kölcsey Street. Up-to-date information on parking, parking locations and fees: parking.heviz.hu – Hévíz parking information Traffic disruptions are also expected Due to the construction works, temporary traffic restrictions and disruptions of varying duration may occur on the affected section of Széchenyi Street. Temporary traffic regulations will be introduced A temporary traffic scheme will be introduced during the construction period. The Hévíz Mayor’s Office will provide further information in a subsequent notice regarding the exact date and details of the traffic restrictions. Accordingly, from the above date, the section designated as a construction area will no longer be available for parking. We would also like to draw residents’ attention to the fact that, due to the use of this section as a construction site, temporary disruptions and traffic restrictions of varying duration are to be expected on this section of Széchenyi Street.
