tartalom: + 1 The Kányavár Island The arched wooden bridge built of wooden beams in the eighties has now become a symbol of Kis-Balaton. We can enjoy a wonderful view of the groves from the bridge. We can admire special waterfowl such as the great egret, the gray heron, or the cormorant, which is less popular with anglers. On the 1.5-kilometer-long "Búbosvöcsök" educational trail, 15 boards show the fish, birds and mammals living in the Kis-Balaton region. You can also go fishing on the island and look at the water and the hills of Zala from two lookout towers.   If you would rather go inside... The Kis-Balaton Visitor Center is the latest exhibition in the Balaton Uplands National Park. An excellent choice for the whole family all year round, with the interactive exhibition even the little ones won't get bored! On the green roof structure of the building, which resembles game passages, you can walk on an interactive educational trail. From here you can clearly see the winter bird feeders and hear birds chirping. There is a gift shop and restaurant in the building as well, and children can enjoy the fresh air in the playground in the courtyard, while parents can refresh themselves with coffee. The cinema is part of the exhibition, where we can get to know the winter-summer, autumn-spring wildlife of Kis-Balaton through touching quotes from the novels of István Fekete Tüskevár and Téli berek during a half-hour film, all in the interpretive interpretation of Gábor Reviczky.     In the interactive part of the exhibition, we can find out what invasive species are and why do they mean danger to the flora and fauna of the region. It turns out what the role of Kis-Balaton is in the protection of the water quality of Lake Balaton, and we can even examine water samples ourselves. If you want to see even more of this magical world, you can take part in a canoe tour organized by the Balaton Uplands National Park from early spring to late autumn. It is only possible to paddle on the Hévíz stream until the mid-March, but on the Gyöngyös stream, which carries the water of the Hévíz stream towards Lake Balaton, the regular tours are available during the year as well. The end point of the rowing tour is Diás Island, where the hut of Matula evokes the atmosphere of the groves. At the István Fekete Memorial next to the small wooden hut, you could also delve into the hidden wonders of Kis-Balaton during a very interesting exhibition.   Secret sights off the beaten path Most places in Kis-Balaton like the Diás Island can only be visited with a guide, but there are quite a few romantic and protected areas that can be explored freely without a guide. Next to the river Zala, you can find the 'Madárvárta' at the dam of Lake Hídvégi, which was built by students from Zurich. The building was made of thousands of acacia logs without any nails or screws. Next to the parking lot, about 100 meters away, you can find the 'fish ladder', where you can marvel at the cavalcade of fish in the spring. The fish ladder between the river Zala and Lake Hidvégi slows down the flow of water, so fish can easily swim in the opposite direction.     Buffaloes and other animal species In the buffalo reserve in Kápolnapuszta, you can not only see buffalos but you can also spot susliks lurking in the grass! Even in the early 20th century, the ground squirrel was considered harmful and therefore water was into their passages, so they would be forced to move away. Other spectacular animals are the goats and donkeys in the petting zoo. In the colonies carved into the loess wall, the bee-eaters stand out with their brightly colored feathers.     But what about buffaloes? The Balaton Uplands National Park started breeding water buffaloes in 1992 in an area purchased for gene conservation. The reserve is home to the largest herd of buffalo in the country, living in great peace with the gray cattles. During the winter, the animals spend most of their time in the barn near the entrance, where we can see the traditional stock-farming in a cozy old photo next to the buffaloes. In better weather, the animals are on pasture, which is most easily reached by horse-drawn carriage ordered in the centre building. The so called black giants are also “buffalo-strong” and don’t necessarily always approach people with friendly intentions. Driving through in the pastures with a horse-drawn carriage is like being on safari. A novelty in the area of the reserve is the lookout tower, which was handed over on January 28, 2022, where we can now observe the animals from up above.   The Kis-Balaton House: a cultural travel Next to the foundation walls of the former church of St. Adorjan and the Cyril and Methodius Memorial Column, you could enjoy the photos of the wonders of Zala County in a Millennium Monument designed by Imre Makovecz. In the letters hanging from the top of the special-shaped dome, you can read the names of the settlements of the county. At the exhibition of the Kis-Balaton House you can find out about the wildlife, and the children can have fun on the playground. Next to the Kis-Balaton House, you can reach the island of Kanyavár on an asphalted bike path on the bank of the river Zala. You can also rent a bike at the Kis-Balaton House. (Opening: March 12. Address: Zalavár, Vársziget utca 2.)   For more information on sights and programs: Tourinform Hévíz8380 Hévíz, Rákóczi str. 2.heviz@tourinform.hu+36 83 540 131

tartalom: + 1 The reflex zone massage is aimed at primarily activating the self-healing power of the body, but it also has an invigorating and relaxing effect. There are thousands and thousands of end bulbs on our foot and sole. The entire body is reflected on these surfaces like a micro-map. The zones are located vertically (5 bands) and horizontally (3 bands). As a result of damaging lifestyle and improper nourishment and due to the excreta accumulated in the body the metabolism of the cells and the operation of the organ systems and organs deteriorate and energy blockages occur. In the reflex zone related to the given organ various nodes can be detected, which might be sensitive or even very painful. The aim of foot massage is to spread and eliminate these nodes by massaging them and to start up the self-healing processes of the body. Foot massage also stimulates and strengthens the immune system and resolves physical and mental stress.  The main principle of reflex zone type massage is that the acupressure points located on our foot and mainly on our sole can be stimulated and the organs and body parts in relation to these acupressure points can also be influenced. Points, which are sensitive to pressure usually, refer to organ-related disorders.

tartalom: + 1 It is an ancient massage based on Far-eastern traditions. Thai massage is a dry massage, no oils or lotions are used during the treatment; clients wear comfortable light clothes. This form of bodywork is usually performed on the floor or on a mattress. During the massage the acupuncture points are stimulated by using a point pressurizing technique. In Thai massage the techniques of acupressure are joined with stretching, dislocating and snapping elements. Thai masseurs use their hands, elbows, knees and feet during the treatment. An original Thai massage takes about an hour to one and half hours. As it is longer than a traditional massage, the impact of the massage lasts also longer. After the massage client is both physically and mentally rejuvenated, the blood circulation is stimulated and the energies of the body are also activated.  Thai massage does not move the muscles, but by the stimulation of the acupuncture points equalizes the body parts. Regular application of Thai massage has a beneficial impact on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, digestive and locomotor (joint and spine problems, back and lower back aches) diseases and provides client with a sense of physical well-being. Treatments used to take place in churches, they were rather considered as mental exercise than physical treatment. In terms of Thai massage the Wat Pho Church located in Bangkok is still an important training and healing centre.

tartalom: + 1 Not everybody knows this wonder of the nature. A lake in Hévíz is located just 200 km from Budapest. Is it worth driving by car or buying a cheap flight ticket to visit this place where time goes slowly, and the beauty of nature surprises at every step.   A miraculous lake The lake in Hévíz is the biggest biologically active thermal lake in the world in which you can swim. Its surface reaches 4,4 ha and the water temperature oscillates between 24°C in winter and 36°C in summer. These conditions are very favorable for all year long baths as well as for the cultivation of tropical water lilies. They make the reservoir look like the one from a fairy tale. The cleanness of the lake’s water is an asset. 410 liters of hot water stream from the underground source every second, so it is completely replenished every three days. However, the medicinal properties of the lake are its biggest advantage. They were recognized already by the Romans in the 2 century A.D. One of the legends says that Mother Mary wrung / created a spring in Hévíz by the appealing prayer of a Christian nurse for the health of the Roman emperor, Flavius Theodosius. There is a natural peat at the lake’s bed and the water is rich in mineral elements like calcium, magnesium, sulphur.   Idyllic scenery Hévíz is a charming health resort, inhabited by 5 000 citizens, located only 6 km from the Balaton lake. It is also one of the most beautifully flowered town in Hungary and in May 2016 it was given an Innovation Award in the category of the Innovative Spa and Health Resort Destination by the European Spas Association. Hévíz has been a well-known health resort for 220 years thanks to the biggest thermal lake in Europe. The number of Polish tourists visiting the city still grows and the standard of the lodging conditions are being constantly improved.   A unique leisure A visit in Hévíz does not need to be only for healing or preventive reasons. In spring and summer when the flowers blossom, the weather encourages for long walks. The lake is surrounded by the forest of exotic trees, where you can find evergreen bald cypresses. On the other hand the city is full of nice cafes and restaurants offering local specialties and exquisite wines. Except for the baths in the thermal lake and the traditional therapy, there is a wide offer of spa and wellness services based on the use of the lake’s water available at the high standard hotels. There are saunas, relaxation massages, beauty treatments, as well as healthy and delicious cuisine is served. For many visitors a stay in Hévíz is a motivation for starting a balanced and healthy way of living. An optimal treatment time is 15 days, however if it not possible it is worth relaxing for a shorter time, too.   Other attractions Hévíz and its surroundings are a perfect place for the fans of cycling tours. Local tourist trails lead to ruins of the beautiful castles, as well as to the shore of the Balaton Lake. There are also many offers of the active stay in the region, and the calendar is full of different cultural events in the city throughout all year.

lead: + 3 The therapy named after Dr. Sebastian Kneipp monk is based on the stimulus generated by the alternation of cold and hot water.
tartalom: + 1 Dr. Kneipp revolutionized holistic medicine in the 19th century. Main features of the Kneipp-therapy: first of the all the body is heated up, which is followed by a short cooling session and the body is reheated again by using physical exercise. Traditional Kneipp-therapy elements are the followings: hand-, elbow- and knee pouring; hot-wet bolstering and hot baths. The therapy also involves physical exercise in fresh air. The bottom part of the Kneipp foot bath is covered with rounded stones. Stones are covered by cold water. Guests are walking in the bath by lifting their feet from the water to hot air, while the stones are gently massaging the soles. This way cold water and hot air generates the alternating bath character. The alternation of cold water and hot air stimulates the vein walls, thus having a beneficial effect on the blood circulation and refreshing the feet. Regular usage of the Kneipp foot bath prevents the development of inflammations and stimulates the metabolism. Kneipp-therapy is also applied in the case of circulation disorders, tense muscles and exhaustion. Principles of the Kneipp-therapy: for the treatment of chronic illnesses hot stimulus and in the case of acute illnesses cold stimulus is recommended accurate, unambiguous water therapy dosage is required for the best effects cold stimulus can be exclusively applied on hot body (heating takes place by using hot water or with the help of exercise) re-heating after treatment (with hot clothing or exercise) Interesting Sebastian Kneipp was suffering from a serious disease from an early age: he had tuberculosis. He was trying to overcome his illness by self-healing. He applied the knowledge written down by Johann Sigmund Hahn in his book in practice. He tried a method in the winter of 1849 - he run to River Danube, while breathing heavily, he got undressed and jumped into the ice-cold river, than he came out of the water, got dressed and run home- which had a positive effect on his illness. As a result of the “treatment” he felt refreshed and healthier and he repeated the treatment on many occasions following his first try. As an additional treatment he was pouring water on his body and he regularly went bathing. As a result of the therapy he regained his health.

It is hard to resist the local specialties, as well as hospitality, especially in the vineyards of Egregy. lead: + 3 Lake Hévíz and Lake Balaton are quite popular destinations in Hungary. Daily, more than ten thousand people spend their holidays in this beautiful region. However, we might raise the question: what do we know and what should we know about the two most iconic lakes of Hungary?
tartalom: + 1 While Lake Balaton is the biggest freshwater lake in Central Europe, Lake Hévíz is the world’s biggest thermal lake that is also suitable for bathing. The source of Lake Balaton is a river called Zala, while Lake Hévíz has its source from a cave underneath the lake. The water of Lake Balaton flows through the Sió channel into the river Danube, however, the water of Lake Hévíz flows into the Gyöngyös stream, then to Small Balaton and ends up in Lake Balaton. The deepest point of Lake Balaton is about 11 metres in contrast to Lake Hévíz, where the source point is 38.5 metres deep. The surface of the water of Lake Balaton is 600 km2 whereas Lake Hévíz has only a 0.0475 km2 water surface. Due to the great water output of Lake Hévíz, the complete water of the lake is replaced in every 72 hours. Regarding Lake Balaton, this phenomenon takes almost two years. The temperature of Lake Balaton can be as high as 28°C on hot summer days; however, during cold winters the upper layers of the water can freeze. The ice can even grow 25 cm thick. On the other hand, the temperature of Lake Hévíz never goes below 23°C, not even in the winter. In the summer, the water of Lake Hévíz is about 35-36°C hot. We would be able to swim around Lake Hévíz in about half an hour if the buildings did not prevent us from doing so. Nonetheless, a week wouldn’t be enough to swim around Lake Balaton. Lake Balaton is full of both summertime and wintertime activities: you can rent a boat or a paddleboat, you can surf, sail and try out many extreme sports, while in the winter you can ice skate or slide if the ice is thick enough. In Lake Hévíz, you may only bath; however, you can do so every day of the year. The water of Lake Balaton is qualified as drinking water, whereas the water of Lake Hévíz is medicinal water also suitable for cures and many people drink it. In Lake Balaton, you can bath all day long, while, in Lake Hévíz, it is advisable to stay only thirty minutes at a time. We can even walk into Lake Balaton from the shores, while into Lake Hévíz we can descend into the water through stairs since the water is 2 metres deep around the shores as well. The typical flora of Lake Balaton is the reed which is mostly located around the shores. Lake Hévíz is famous for the beautiful water lilies that float around the whole Lake. Both lakes are rich in different species of fish. The mud of Lake Balaton is quite popular with kids who love playing with it on the beaches. On the other hand, the mud of Lake Hévíz is favoured by adults, who like to use the mud on their bodies due to its medical benefits. Lake Balaton as a touristic region is the second most popular region in Hungary after Budapest. At the same time, Hévíz, following Budapest, has the greatest number of guest nights in Hungary. Lake Balaton offers spectacular views whether you are watching it in the embrace of monadnocks, admiring it in a storm, or you are taking photos of the birds gathering along the crevasses or of the bellying sails. The crystal clear turquoise colour of Lake Hévíz, the blooming water lilies floating on it, the whirling mist above it, the reflection of the buildings at night, and to be aware that you are floating above 38.5 meters are a mystical feeling. Both Lake Balaton and Lake Hévíz are national treasures, which have evolved over millions of years as they are today. They are not for us, but we enjoy all the good that they can give us. We have to save and protect them so that the future generations would be able to enjoy the unparalleled natural beauty they provide.

tartalom: + 1 Background: Every year since 2009, the "European Best Destination" competition has been held. In the course of the competition, the public can decide which city of the top 20 tourist paradises in Europe is worthy of the title of "best destination". The prize was established to promote European tourism and culture, in cooperation with more than 300 tourism partners and the EDEN network set up by the European Commission. This year's ‘European Best Destination 2020’ vote ended at noon on 5 th February 2020, with over 600,000 votes on Europe's top destinations. As Hévíz was competing with favoured cities such as Paris, Madrid or Vienna, even takingpart in this great competition was a great pleasure for Hévíz. The result: In this exclusive competition, Hévíz finished in the top fifteen, ahead of, among others Prague and Madrid. The 12th place that Hévíz achieved shows that Hévíz received the most votes among the spa towns in the nine-year history of the competition, so Hévíz is one of the greatest spa brands in Europe. During the competition, - in addition to domestic votes - many votes were received from German, English, Norwegian, Austrian, Russian and Asian travellers. This clearly proves that Hévíz is a prestigious tourist destination of these nations.     Its significance: Hévíz is not only famous for the world's largest natural thermal lake; but for years, more and more guests have been attracted by the high quality of hotel services, excellent gastronomy and leisure facilities, which are becoming increasingly popular with families and groups of friends. Hévíz boasts the title of European Capital of Well-Being in 2020, based on the results of the competition. Hévíz is listed all year round on Europe's most visited tourist website as a highly recommended destination: it has six million website visitors and ninety thousand Facebook followers. Tourist activity increased by an average of 15% in the settlements participating in the competition in previous years. We would like to say thank you to everyone who voted for Hévíz and by doing so strengthened Hévíz's position in this outstanding league. True to our promise, among those who participated in our game related to the voting, on 14th February, on Valentine's Day, we will draw a wellness holiday for a couple in Hévíz. The lucky winner will be notified via email.

tartalom: + 1 New investments are taking place at many locations of the Lake Balaton Touristic Region. The investments and developments are aiming locations which are in connection with the Festetics Family of Keszthely. Thanks to the project, a cultural route is being created which will not only introduce the region but will also focus on the heritage of the Festetics. Regarding Hévíz, the main focus of the project is to completely renew the promenade around the lake. Since the investments are taking place in a nature reserve, careful planning preceded the beginning of the work. The plan had reached its final form with the inclusion of conservationist experts and with competent authority approval. The plan was also examined in accordance with the environmental action program defined by the European Union. As a result, the protection of the flora and fauna will be extremely important during the execution of the plan. For instance, the first step of the building process will take place outside of the growing season so the works wouldn’t disturb the hatching and nursing season of the birds. To preserve the character and the natural value of the park, a certain part of the tree and scrog stock will be renewed as well. The majority of the plants to be cut (63 scrogs and trees) are not native. To their stead, 12,500 new plants will be planted, focusing on the following: The first points to consider during the choosing of the new plants were the natural value, décor and variety. It was highly important to choose new plants which would bloom over more seasons and that the different structures and foliage would be appealing to the scene. Since the park is visited all year long, a lot of evergreens were also chosen. During the 12-month development, new attractions and services will provide convenience for the guests. The new attractions, promenades, photo points, the music pavilion and the pergola will revive a historical atmosphere. The fountains, the lights, the irrigation system and the rainwater channels will be also renovated. Partial roadblocks are to be expected during the works, however, the renovation won’t disturb the services of the Lake or the Saint Andrews Rheumatological Hospital.   [galeria]

tartalom: + 1 Kányavári Island The arched wooden bridge built from wooden beams in the 1980s has now become a symbol of Kis-Balaton. We can enjoy a wonderful view from the bridge. We can admire such special waterfowl as the great egret, gray heron, or the cormorant, which is less popular with fishermen. On the one-and-a-half kilometer long Búbosvöcsök nature trail, 15 signs present the fish, birds, and mammals of the Little Balaton. You can also fish on the island and you can spy the water and the Zalai hills from two lookouts. In cooler weather, a little indoor attraction is good The Kis-Balaton Visitor Center is an exhibition of the Balaton Upland National Park that has only been open for 2 years. It is an excellent choice for the whole family all year round. You can walk along an interactive nature trail on the building's green-roofed structure, which looks like wildlife crossings. From here you can clearly see the winter bird feeders and you can hear the "opening song" of the ever more active black tit. The building houses a gift shop and a restaurant, and children can enjoy fresh air on the playground in the courtyard, while parents refresh themselves with coffee. Part of the exhibition is the cinema, where during a half-hour film we can get to know the winter-summer, autumn-spring life of Kis-Balaton through soul-touching quotes selected from the novels of István Fekete Tüskevár and Téli berek, all in the understanding interpretation of Gábor Reviczky. In the interactive part of the exhibition, we can find out what invasive species are and why we don't like them. We will find out what the role of Little Balaton is in protecting the water quality of Lake Balaton, and we can even examine water samples ourselves. Those who want to see even more of this magical wildlife can take part in a guided canoe tour organized by the Balaton Upland National Park from early spring to late autumn. The winter canoeing season has also started on the Hévíz stream. Those who take part in this can row along the Hévíz stream and then the Gyöngyös stream, and get to know this unique wetland. The end point of the rowing tour is Diás Island, where the Matula hut, evoking the atmosphere of Tüskevár, stands. At the István Fekete Memorial next to the small wooden hut, you can also delve into the hidden wonders of Kis-Balaton during a very interesting exhibition. Our secret tip is the bird watch and fish ladder Several locations in Kis-Balaton, such as the aforementioned Diás island, can only be visited with a guide, but there are still quite a few romantic and protected areas that can be visited freely without a guide. Next to the Zala river, at the dam of Lake Hídvégi, you can find the Madárvártara, which was built by Zurich students from thousands of acacia logs without any nails or screws. Next to the parking lot, 100 meters away on the fish ladder, depending on the season, you can marvel at the cavalcade of fish. The fish ladder between the Zala River and Lake Hidvégi slows down the flow of water, so that fish can easily swim upstream.   Buffaloes and other types of animals In the Kápolnapuszta buffalo reserve, in addition to the black giants, the ground squirrels are the favorites of children and adults, who cutely graze on the grass grazed by the buffaloes. Anyone who did not know János Arany's poem Arany Lacinak would not even think that the poor groundhog was "cast". Even at the beginning of the 20th century, groundhogs were considered harmful and therefore water was poured into their passages. Other spectacular animals are the jumping goats and donkeys in the petting zoo. In the colonies dug into the loess wall, the gophers attract attention with their brightly colored feathers. But what about buffaloes? The Balaton Upland National Park started breeding water buffalo in the area purchased in 1992 for the purpose of gene conservation. The largest herd of buffaloes in the country can be found in the territory of the reserve, which lives in great peace with the gray cattle. During the winter, the animals spend most of their time in the barn near the entrance, where you can see the traditional animal husbandry in a cozy old photo next to the buffaloes. In case of good weather, the animals are in the pastures, which can be reached in the easiest way by a horse-drawn carriage ordered from the reception building. The giants are "buffalo-strong" and do not necessarily always approach people with friendly intentions, and driving through them in a horse-drawn carriage is a real "safari" feeling. A new feature of the reserve is the viewing platform, which was handed over on January 28, from which we can now also observe the animals from above. (GPS: 46.581816, 17.20314) Kis-Balaton House, cultural trip Next to Zalavár, next to the foundation walls of the former St. Adorján church and the Cyril and Methodius memorial column, you can enjoy photos of the wonders of Zala county in a very cool Millennium Memorial designed by Imre Makovecz. You can read the names of the county's settlements in the letters hanging from the top of the specially shaped dome. At the Kis-Balatonház exhibition, you can learn about the living world, and children can have fun on the playground. Next to the Kis-Balaton Ház, you can reach the Kányavári island on the asphalted bicycle path on the banks of the Zala river. At the Kis-Balaton Ház you can also rent a bicycle, if you don't start on the asphalted Zala coast, but in the other direction, you can even go as far as Zalaapáti on the embankment.   Are you interested in more hiking tips in the area?
