Don't miss out the famous carnival doughnut either!           22 February | Traditional Pig Slaughter The Traditional Pig Slaughter and Charity is organized the community of the Farmers’ Market of Hévíz.The guests will have the chance to taste the traditional food and drinks which are served under this unique event.       28-29 March | Fair of Handmade Goods This weekend, Hévíz is hosting a fair full with handmade crafts made by local craftsmen and women.           12-13 April | Easter Fair of Handmade Goods The season starts with diverse programs in which you can get to how a typical Hungarian Easter is celebrated. Each day of the Easter Festival the visitors awaitwith fairs, playhouses and traditional food, of course.         30 April -1 May | Hévíz at the Turn of the Century The event, which was started in 2011, evokes the ‘golden years’ of Hévíz, a period that lasted from the 1860s to the 1930s. The town tries to recall the atmosphere of the palmy days of peace in every possible way during the event: organ-grinders wearing tails and top hat play music in the streets, ladies dressed in hoop skirt and hat walk in the flowering park leading to the thermal lake. The event will be opened by a costume parade accompanied with live music and dance, in the course of which the professions and trades of the period will be presented.   9-10 May | 5th Running Festival of Hévíz The runners who manage to run 4-14-21 km will not only get to experience a well-organised event but they also will be gifted T-Shirts, medals and an unforgettable experience! The half marathon can be done individually or in a relay.         11 May | Giro d'Italia in Hévíz One of the world's most famous bicycle races comes to Hungary! As part of the three-day-event, the race goes through Hévíz on 11 May. The race will be also accompanied by many programs organised in the city of Hévíz!           16 May | Flavius Day In Egregy (a district of Hévíz) next to the remains of the Roman villa, in a beautiful landscaped area, we recall the traditions of Roman times: gladiator fights, toga parades, ancient oracles, the fashion and hairstyle, as well as ancient board games. You can have a taste from the dishes and drinks of the period.       30 May - 1 June | Pentecostal Merriment and Fair During the four-day Pentecostal celebrations, we await the visitors of Hévíz with joyful programmes and activities. The tradition of electing the king and queen of Pentecost will also be evoked. During the festivities, don’t miss the Pentecostal fair and playhouse either.       14 June | XV. Lotus Retro Concours D'Elegance At the Lotus Retro Mobil Concours d'Elegance, precious and exotic collectibles from Hungary, Austria and Germany find their way to Hévíz. On Sunday in the large park of the Lotus Therme "high-gloss atmosphere", when the beautiful models of Mercedes, Lotus, Jaguar, Corvette, Cadillac or Porsche can be viewed and evaluated. You can further expect a grill tent, kid’s programs.     26-28 June | Angels and Vagabonds All-arts Festival including International Colony of Artists, Cinematic Art Symposium, Street Music and Street Art Festival and the Long Night of Museums Visitors will be offered lively and colourful programmes in the centre of Hévíz during the three-day event. The multiplicity of music (country, pop, dixie, guitar, accordion and brass band music, relaxing music, folk music, as well as jazz and pop), along with showmen, living statues, acrobats, street artists walking on stilts, painters, draughtsmen make the weekend fascinating and unforgettable.   11-12 July | Beer Festival For the first time this year, the lovers of beers are also get to experience what is it to have their own festival. During the weekend, guests will have the chance to taste the best beers from Hungary and abroad too!       25 July | St. Mary Magdalene Fair in Egregy The patron saint of the Árpád-age church in Egregy is St. Mary Magdalene. The parish feast is held in her honour on Mary Magdalene’s Day every year. Real festive atmosphere with arts and crafts fair, carousel, shooting gallery and excellent culinary offers are provided for the visitors.     1-2 August | Nostalgia Weekend At the nostalgia weekend, the centre of Hévíz will be filled with chamber ensembles, pianists recalling the atmosphere of old cafés, while couples are dancing the waltz all around. The visitors of the programmes can enjoy nostalgic melodies by candlelight at the terraces of coffee shops and restaurants.       19-23 August | 9th Wine Festival of Hévíz At the 9th wine festival of Hévíz, we await our guests with a cultural and culinary offer unique in the region. In addition to the wineries of Zala County, the representatives of the prominent Hungarian wine regions will also introduce themselves in the ‘wine street’ of Festetics Square. The lovers of wines can enjoy wonderful drinks under centuries-old sycamore trees in a pleasant atmosphere.   5-6 September | Flavours, Dances, Good Neighbours including Folklore and World music Festival In the course of this two-day festival, in addition to the wonderful treasure of the Hungarian folk dance, folk music and cuisine, the folk art and gastronomy of the neighbouring countries will also be introduced, as it is referred to in the title.       12 September | III. Oldtimer Car Festival This year, the festival is organised for the third time, so we make an attempt to break the record of the biggest number of OT license plated participants! Besides this, you can expect music and many retro cards parading in the city!     12 September | Harvest of Egregy On the first weekend of September, the traditional harvest festivities is organised in the district of Egregy. The event starts off with the traditional harvest parade and continues with the harvest. Taste delicious wines with traditional music playing in the background.         26-27 September | Fair of Handmade Goods We await you with a weekend filled with local handmade crafts in September too!           7-8 November | St. Martin’s Day and Family Festival The popular goose race kicks off the St. Martin’s Day Family Festival every year. In addition to children’s programmes, handcraft workshops and folk playground await visitors. The new wine will be blessed in the Holy Spirit Church. It will be followed by a lamp-lit march from the church to the location of the festival. We understand that everyone's priority is to protect their loved ones because we feel the same way. Hévíz will wait for you! We will still be here when the epidemic is over.” In Hévíz, generations have grown up and lived their lives in the world of hospitality. They have experienced difficult situations, from wars to natural disasters, for which reason they have been prepared for almost everything. Based on many years of experience, every effort is being made to mitigate the risk of the epidemic, while keeping the safety of our guests and those living and working in Hévíz fully in mind. “At the same time, we cannot forget the guests who are still in Hévíz, as, Hévíz being a health resort, many guests stay here for a longer time to take treatments for their locomotive disorders and complaints. Under normal circumstances, accommodation, hospitality and catering facilities give priority to meeting high hygiene standards, for which they are now even more prepared. Additional hand sanitizers have been deployed in community spaces, the cleaning and disinfecting activities have been multiplied, cutlery disinfection rules have been tightened, and, if required, the chlorine content of swimming pool waters has been increased according to NFCSO (National Food Chain Safety Office) guidelines. Safety depends on all of us, let’s take care of each other!” In compliance with nationwide emergency regulations, the following precautions and restrictions have been implemented in the town to this day (Monday, March 16, 2020, at 2 p.m.): With the introduction of a limitation on the number of people in the lake, a maximum of 450 people can stay in the bath, which can safely receive this amount of traffic as an outdoor bath. Also, the adventure bath, wellness and sauna services are suspended. The staff of hotels strive to provide flexible rescheduling and find the best solution for their guests. Advances have paid so far will not be forfeited in the event of rescheduling. lead: After being closed for more than 7 weeks, Lake Hévíz reopens its gates on 9 May, at 9 o’clock.

tartalom: + 1 With taking the right safety measurements, the Lake opens only its beach side for the time being. The Spa asks its visitors to follow the rules regarding hygiene and use only the showers which are located outside on the beach.  The indoor areas are being sanitized continuously, but they are not open yet for guests. Lake Hévíz is in the unique situation that the 4.4 hectare of natural, clean thermal water constantly changes and cleans itself naturally due to its discharge rate of 410 litres per second. The temperature of the lake revolves around 30 °C as of right now, thanks to the thermal springs inside the lake. This way outdoor swimming and bathing is really pleasant right now. Lake Hévíz is also surrounded by a 6.6-hectare forest, where guests coming to Hévíz can easily avoid crowds and be in the fresh air while enjoying themselves in the shadows of the wonderful swamp cypresses.     The Hotels Are Preparing to Open too Hotels in Hévíz are accepting reservations from Whitsun, however, most of the hotels will stay closed during the weeks before that.  Currently the staffs of the hotels are working behind closed doors; they are making everything in preparation for the arriving guests so they can enjoy their stay in the cleanest and safest environment. For the time being, the most important thing is safety. All the hotels do everything in their power to follow the safety rules made by the Hungarian Government and the statements released by the Hungarian Touristic Agency in their COVID guidebook. In Hévíz, there were no problems regarding tidiness in the hotels before the outbreak of the virus either, most restaurants and community centrums had already had hand sanitizers placed out. Currently they are working together to make buffet cafeterias 100% safe for the hotel guests: safety is important for all of us especially regarding the touch-free service and keeping the suggested social distance.   The Farmers’ Market of Hévíz and Other Attractions Since 4 May, Hévíz has started to revive: the terraces of the restaurants and cafés are starting to open up, the windows of stores are being reorganised. Parks and playgrounds are also open, the new plants and flowers for the summer were also set up in the flowerbeds. Soon you will be able to find your favourite ice cream at the best ice cream parlour in the city, at the Rózsakert Restaurant. Soon the best wines will be also available at the cellars and restaurants at the Egregy vineyards. The Farmers’ Market of Hévíz is also open with the regular working hours three times a week; however, between 9 and 11 am only people over 65 years old can purchase the fresh fruits and vegetables. At the market, the use of face masks is compulsory! For the re-opening of the museums and the cinema we still have to wait. Events still cannot be organised, however, the local government is trying to find a solution so the streets of Hévíz can be filled up with music again with avoiding the big gatherings as well. The Tourinform Office of Hévíz is still only open via telephone or e-mail. The office is set to be open again in the second half of May, until then feel free to contact our collegaues who help guests gladly! The city became peaceful and silent in no matter of time. By the middle of May, the long awaited moment has arrived: life gets back to normal in Hévíz! Shops are already open and terraces of cafés started to get full of life slowly. Lake Hévíz has been open since 9 May, so visitors can swim again in the 30°C lake under the blue sky. The first guests have already arrived in private accommodations. Four hotels will be open by the Whitsun weekend, however, reservations are accepted in every hotel. The hotels are very flexible regarding rescheduling the previously booked dates. During these two months everyone was busy with renovating and renewing so they could provide their guests a better environment than ever.  The safety precautions and hygiene restrictions are taken very seriously everywhere. Restaurants like Az Én Anyósom, Liget Restaurant, Vilmos Cellar and Római Cellar are already open and await guests both inside and on their terraces with keeping the necessary safety and hygiene restrictions.  The restaurant of Zala Springs is also ideal to have a good lunch after playing golf. ACTIVE ADVENTURES FOR ADRENALINE ADDICTS If you look for active experiences outdoors, and besides that, come to Hévíz with children, you do not have to go far for a little adventure. tartalom: + 1 After the strictly observed security measures, there has been news every day since May that a service provider has reopened their facilities or services in Hévíz. HAPPY PEOPLE ON THE TERRACES OF RESTAURANTS Now you can see people drinking coffee or wine in a fine mood on the terraces and in the indoor rooms of restaurants and cafés. The wine cellars of Egregy and the ice cream parlours have also been opened. You can have a set menu or choose from the a la carte menu, drink some wine in the evening or sit down for a slice of cake, ‘lángos’ (fried dough) or lemonade after bathing in the lake. As usual, the Hévíz Farmers’ Market is open three times a week, where visitors and, of course, buyers can choose from the full range of products again. HOLIDAYMAKERS AT THE ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES On the shores of the pools of the hotels, guests are occupying more and more sunbeds, couples looking for relaxing wellness, fans of fit life, health tourists and families aiming to explore the area have arrived. The playgrounds and children’s pools are already full of laughter. At the buffets, the usual wide selection awaits the visitors, and in the wellness areas, freshly filled adventure pools and pools of medicinal water can be found. And the interest in private accommodation is even greater this summer. PEOPLE WALKING TO THE LAKE WITH FOAM RUBBER RINGS CAN BE SEEN EVERYWHERE Since the reopening of the Hévíz Lake Bath on 9th May, thousands of visitors have already enjoyed the refreshing and healing power of the hot water. In addition to being a unique natural medicinal lake in the world, it is now a clear attraction of Lake Hévíz that on the 4.4 hectares of water surface and in the park and beach surrounding the lake you can enjoy bathing and relaxing in 32-34°C hot water completely without crowdedness. At Whitsun, the changing rooms of the Main Entrance on Dr Schulhof Vilmos Promenade opened. They had been completely renovated during the winter, so they are now more spacious, colourful, and practical. Since 21st May, the indoor pools and relaxation areas can also be used again, so the windy, overcast weather cannot be an obstacle to a pleasant splash in Hévíz. The drinking fountain in the hospital building will be open to the public again. IT IS WORTH BOOKING AN APPOINTMENT FOR A GOOD MASSAGE IN ADVANCE It is worth making an appointment for a massage with wellness service providers again, and the ladies and gentlemen also arrive one after the other at the hairdressers. There is a lot of interest in healthcare service providers again; dentists, opticians and beauty salons are open again. Local stores constantly receive new summer stocks. THE WITCH OF HÉVÍZ’S SKELETON CAN BE SEEN AGAIN IN EGREGY On 22nd May, the museums of Hévíz reopened, the exhibitions can be visited again, and the churches of the town can be viewed from the inside. IDEAL LOCATION FOR ACTIVE RECREATION The open-air leisure facilities have been operating since the beginning of May, so you can also visit the playgrounds, sports fields, and fitness parks. The Tavirózsa Adventure Park awaits its guests and the largest hot air balloon and gyrocopter in the country fly again. There are guided Segway tours again and players are welcomed to the golf course. Renovated and improved city and touring bikes await those who would rent a bike, and this year, the offer of the Tourinform Office has even been expanded with brand new electric bikes. DIVERSE EXPERIENCE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Within a 30 km radius of Hévíz, there are many programme opportunities for those who long for adventures. The museums in Keszthely are open, all the exhibitions of the Festetics Mansion can be visited. As a new experience in the bay of Keszthely, the panorama of Lake Balaton can be admired even from a Ferris wheel. After almost a year of renovation work, the Szigliget Castle awaits its visitors again with several experiences, but the places of interest of the Balaton Uplands National Park and the adventure parks of the area are also open. To the greatest delight of the children, qualified child-friendly beaches await those who wish to paddle in Lake Balaton. DON’T GIVE UP ON A REAL VACATION THIS SUMMER. tartalom: + 1 From 10 February 2021 Hotel Európa fit opens its gates! Based on the government decrees, hotels can only accept guests with business purposes. Due to the pandemic, the wellness section including the saunas and the gym remained closed, however, convenience is guaranteed in the delightful hotel atmosphere. The remarkable restaurant of the hotel and the bar as well waits for the business guests, what is more they can also enjoy the services provided by the Vitalium Health & Beauty & Laser health centrum. The hotel offers 2 business packages, one being the Business Basic package which can be booked from one night with breakfast. The other package is called the Exclusive Working Days which is an all-inclusive offer with drinks provided with your dinner. The people living around Hévíz will be able to order 5-star hotel menus for Valentine’s Day, birthdays or for just any occasion at a discounted price. The medical services of the hotel are also available for everyone.     Five-star romance and a hotel just for the two of you? Without booking accommodation people can also apply for the super romantic programs called Sweet Relaxation or Couples’ Delight just for Valentine’s Day. The Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa still remains closed but those who book the programs mentioned before can enter the hotel’s beauty parlor! So basically they get to have the whole hotel for a romantic night. The Couples’ Delight program contains a couples’ massage, an hour-long relaxation in the salt cave and a one-person service (pedicure, manicure, facial massage, painting eyelashes and eyebrows and hairdressing for the ladies and hairwashing, hair cutting for the men) with a bottle of Lotus champagne. The Sweet Relaxation program has the massage and the salt cave as well but a plus treatment is also included: pedicure or manicure for two, 1-1 facial treatment, 1 bottle of Lotus champagne and a little chocolate just to make it perfect for the night. Those who cannot visit the hotel by the end of March, they will find some exclusive gifts in the hotel’s webshop.     Gift Cards and Discounts for Booking NaturMed Hotel Carbona will stay closed until 1 March as of right now. The guarantee for experience and active leisure time will be also important.   A Fresh Image Harmonised with Nature ‘We wanted to keep the well-known water lily which has been the symbol of Hévíz for years. Of course, we wanted to embody the contemporary trends as well. The water drops which are also the petals of the water lily were coloured to be green and blue which are symbolising the blue water of the lake and the greenery that surrounds it. We hope the new logo will also strengthen the new message: Hévíz can offer many programs besides the lake all year around’ said the art director of Armadillo marketing agency, Ildikó Szőke.     Continuing Building Hévíz as a Love Brand The new communication of the city includes the already familiar health tourism direction but it also highlights ‘slowing down’ and personalised program possibilities. These new elements can be really appealing to an audience who would like to escape from the tiring weekdays to experience various adventures. ’We wanted to show that Hévíz is more than a lake; Hévíz is the fountain of life and adventures!’ said the managing director of Hévíz Tourism Nonprofit Ltd., Tamás Pálffy. ‘It doesn’t mean we would like to get rid of the old traditions. We would rather continue building the love brand. We would really like if the younger generations and the active middle aged would regard Hévíz and its region as one of the most appealing destinations in Hungary. Of course, we won’t forget about our regulars either: we are going to satisfy the needs of the old and the new senior generations as well’.     The Value of Hévíz is for Forever, but its Face Changes with the World The power of the curing water in Hévíz and the unmatched atmosphere made the city quite popular for centuries. tartalom: + 1 The Bobo Fun Park is more than a regular adventure park. This is the perfect place for both children and adults to have some fun or blow off steam. The fun park is also a remarkable venue to organise birthday parties, dates or team-building days! The Bobo Fun Park has opened its gates on 14 June 2021. The Fun Park can be found in Alsópáhok, next to Hotel Kolping. If you are looking for some active leisure time or your children need some place to play... this place has everything in the 3000 m2 big hall! The fun park is located in an indoor facility which makes it perfect to visit during rainy days as well. The park is open for everyone over 6 years old.     THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE ENTERING You can buy two kinds of tickets: one from 10 am to 2 pm and another from 3 pm to 7 pm. Tickets are available for purchase online and at the venue as well. You can arrive anytime but you have to leave the park at 2 pm and 7 pm. Between 2 pm and 3 pm and after 7 pm the crew of the park cleans up and also sanitizes the venue so children could play in a nice and tidy environment. At the moment the park can only be visited with immunity/vaccination cards over 18 years old.     THINGS YOU SHOULD LEAVE AT HOME AND THING YOU WILL NEED It is strictly forbidden to bring in food or drinks with you so the park could remain as clean as possible. You can have some refreshments and snacks at the café of the fun park. When you first enter the park, you have to purchase a pair of grip socks (non-slip socks). You can keep these socks and bring them with you next time. If you want to try out the climbing walls as well, you should bring a pair of indoor shoes which have clean and light-coloured soles. Before entering you have to fill in a declaration of liability form. Under 10 years old, children can enter only with an adult, between 10-18 they should have a statement of consent from their parents. Come to the Bobo Fun Park and enjoy yourself!

lead: ABORRA means "for the wine". In 2020, with cooperating restaurants and hotels from all over the city, the event "Variations for ABORRA" was launched in Hévíz. During this special weekend, you can choose from soups, main dishes and dessert specialties prepared with the Wine of the of Hévíz.

tartalom: + 1 This year's event will take place immediately after St. Martin's Day, on the weekend from November 12th to 14th. This means that besides the young wine goose will also enrich the menu offerings this year.   Main ingredient: Aszófőer Welschriesling from the Fodorvin winery The title “Wine of the City of Hévíz 2021” went to the 2020 Aszófőer Welschriesling from the Fodorvin winery. The competition took place on July 7 in the restaurant of the Hotel Spa Hévíz with the participation of an expert jury. Our jury was not mistaking, since they truly got the best: the Aszófőer Welschriesling by Fodorvin was again selected as the winner of the Italian Riesling category at the Parliament's Wine Chest in October  2021 from among 218 wines. The family cellar of the Fodorvin winery was built in 1858 in Aszófő, in the Vörösmáli vineyard, where they currently manage 9 hectares as a family business. The reductively produced wine has a pronounced greenish-yellow color, and its aroma is dominated by citric and vegetable notes. The full taste is complemented by a pleasant acidity. It can currently also be purchased in the Hévíz Tourinform office with the label “Wine of the City of Hévíz 2021”.   Exceptional menus and courses In mid-November, the restaurants in Hévíz will prepare more than just special dishes with the winning wine. These delicacies in the Platán restaurant will include, for example, the foie gras ragout with forest mushrooms and Aszófőer Welschriesling on a crispy yeast plait, as well as the crispy leg of goose with sage and rosemary potatoes and apple slices braised in Hévíz city wine. In the NaturMed Hotel Carbona's buffet menu - which is not only open to hotel guests - you can try, for example, a sauerkraut soup with smoked meat, dill and Aszófőer Welschriesling. There will also be a goose stomach ragout with a creamy mushroom sauce, which has been perfumed with Aszófőer Welschriesling. tartalom: + 1 We gathered the programs that await you at the end of the year in Hévíz.   The Lights of Advent in the City and Celebration at the Farmer's Market of Hévíz The inner city of Hévíz is filled with lights of Advent in December. A Christmas tree, a Betlehem and an Advent Wreath is placed at the Festetics Square. A candle is lit on each Sunday on the Advent Wreath. The promenade will be filled with wooden houses, atmospheric music and enticing smells. A fair of handmade products and children programs will wait everyone at Moll Square. On the Farmers' Market there will be special gastronomy programs on each Saturday morning. On 30 December, a Pig Slaughter will be held at the Farmer's Market of Hévíz. On the 31 December a New Year's Eve party will be taken place in the tent with concerts and street festival.     Holiday concerts and the best performers at the hotels of Hévíz If you decide to stay one of the hotels in Hévíz during the holiday season, many program wil guarantee your entertainment. During the day, you may enjoy the relaxing wellness sections of the hotels, while in the evening the finest dishes and the best performers will make sure you enjoy your stay. In NaturMed Hotel Carbona, guests can enjoy the piano play on each weekend of  the Advent. From 24 December each new day will bring about a new program as well: goulash party, Dynamic Band in the ball room, ham and champagne tasting, sauna seances and gingerbread decorating will await the guests. Éva Csepregi, Viki Singh, Bálint Gájer, the Bon-Bon band and a samba show will entertain guests in the holiday season.     The team of Hotel Európa fit also made sure that hotel guests would have the best time during there stay during the holidays. Between 24 December and 31 December music programs will be held each day. Bettina Bódis, Endre Varga, the Happy Dixieland Band, the Silver Duo, Miki Varga and his band will also perform. The guest performers of the New Year's Eve party will be Veca Janicsák and the Ritmo Conga Show. If you decide to come with your whole family, children animations and programs will be held each day for the smallest ones. The Korona Restaurant makes a thematic New Year's Eve party each year. This year a Moulin Rogue inspired party will await guests, so it is better to make a table reservation now if you want to make sure to enjoy one of the best parties in the city. French music, period dresses, French dishes and drinks will make sure to make you feel like you are in Paris. Make sure to arrive in an appropriate dress or suit.     One of the best destination for the holidays, especially if you are arriving with your kids is the Kolping Hotel & Spa Family Resort in Alsópáhok. tartalom: + 1 The Hungarian spa town of Hévíz is famous for its sulphurous thermal lake and its unconventional therapies. The devil himself once worked the fields around here, but it was such hard going that in a fit of rage, old Harry flung down his plow so hard that it shot deep into the earth – or so the ancient Hungarian legend goes. Warm water henceforth flowed from a spring on that spot and has fed the thermal lake ever since. Resort entrance The reality on this early fall morning in Hévíz is less dramatic:14 degrees Celsius and a light drizzle. After a cool night,a white mist hangs over the deep-blue lake and the bathhouse on stilts at its center with its pretty wooden spires. It looks straight out of a Disney film, but smells like a sulfur mine.   Author Mathias Becker in the thermal lake I wait on the shore, shivering in my shorts. I’m supposed to take a dip in the lake, but not before an attendant has arrived– for safety’s sake. The fumes apparently make some people feel woozy in the water. I stick my big toe in to test it – lukewarm. When my potential life saver comes into sight soon after, I slide into the lake like a fish eager to return to its element. Sedately, I swim by water lilies and on into the fairy-tale landscape. Somewhere beneath me lies the lake’s geological source: Every second, 410 liters of mineral-rich water, heated naturally to a very pleasant temperature by the earth, flow from a crack inthe rock 38 meters down. That’s why the water temperature can be as high as 38° C in summer and only go down to 25° C in  winter. Regular bathing in the lake is said to ease rheumatic complaints and back pain; drinking the water in healing doses reputedly aids digestive disorders. The mists have now evaporated and the first bathers of the day are stepping into the lake. Nearly all have a brightly colored foam pool noodle around their hips. It looks silly but helps keep them afloat – a safety precaution. You’re not supposed to stay in the water for more than half an hour anyway, and it’s completely off limits for anyone with cardiovascular problems. I swim slowly back, then make myself comfortable on one of the sunbeds around the inner pool. The lake has made me drowsy. Tropical waterlilies With a surface area of over four hectares, this thermal lake is the largest in the world suitable for bathing. There is one in New Zealand of a similar size, but at a constant temperature of 55 to 60° C, it is better suited to steaming vegetables than bathing. The Hévíz lake resort, on the other hand, is like a warm bathtub even in frosty weather, making the small town on the western shore of Lake Balaton Hungary’s most popular place of pilgrimage for those with back and joint complaints, even despite its competition within Hungary. From the famous Turkish baths in Budapest to the cave baths of Miskolc (where you have to swim through tenebrous tunnels) and the thermal baths in Hajdúszoboszló (one of Europe’s largest), more than 1300 thermal springs make the country on the Pannonian Plaina veritable healing hotspot. Many a source was only discovered while drilling for oil, but the warm waters of Hévíz were already popular with the ancient Romans. Bathing culture ended soon after the fall of Rome and was only revived in the late 18th century. First came the nobles and the bourgeoisie; then, in the Communist era, it was the turn of the workers. Allegedly, it was the party big wigs who involuntarily stopped the fun: Duringone of their sauna parties, the wooden bathhouse caughtfire and burned down. Rebuilt in 1989, the bathhouse reopened when Communism ended. The old political system disappeared, but Hévíz remained and blossomed. The town recorded over a million overnight stays in 2017, around 40 percent from Hungary, the rest from across Europe. A wellness industry with massage and beauty salons has long become established in and around the resort. Hotels have installed spas, and some flood their pools with the thermal water. To get a sense of the unbroken enthusiasm for Hévíz, I booked in for some of the traditional Hévíz treatments. First, the mud bath. I climb down steps into a steel basin the size of a garden pool that’s anchored in the lake. Just a few steps, and already the heavy mud, making a gloopy, bubblysound at every step, is up to my thighs – and up to my bellybutton when I sit down. A woman beside me reaches for the grainy, strong-smelling mass and gleefully smears it onto her face and shoulders. I bravely follow her lead. That evening, I notice that my skin feels unusually soft and I sleep better that night than I have for a very long time. Awakening the next morning, I can’t wait to get moving and am ravenously hungry. After breakfast, I have a massage appointment in the wellness and therapy area. Stefania Bajer, atherapeutic and sports masseur sporting a severe undercut, greets me with a firm handshake. In just 20 minutes, she has kneaded my muscles so expertly that I still feel the beneficial effects of it days later. I ask her whether my back is in good shape. I’m 40, I jog now and again, but spend most of my time in front of the computer. I haven’t had any pain – so far. “You need to exercise more,” says Bayer, “much more!” Mud wrestler: author Mathias Becker is clearly enjoying his bath Later on, I get to see where a lack of exercise can lead at the bath house: to the underwater “stretching pool,” where patients with back problems are suspended in the water, their arms or neck fastened into a kind of harness so that they cannot move. At the same time, weights attached to their hips pull their vertebraeminimally apart, relieving the discs between them. Developed in 1953 by Károly Moll, a local physician, this therapyis still used successfully on patients with disc problems. As I have no trouble with my spinal discs, I am allowed into thewater with very little ballast for a kind of trial therapy, so to speak. My arms rest on a kind of underwater gymnastics bar and I am drawn down by two three-kilo steel weights attached toa belt. My feet make no contact. “Harascho?” In Russian, Bajerasks the young man next to me whether he’s all right – but he doesn’t look it. My neighbor is wearing the kind of neck brace people wear after a rear-impact collision, and there are two metal bars on top of it, keeping his head above water. “Harascho …,”he breathes softly. As we leave the pool 20 minutes later, Anton Marukhin tells me that he’s a 28-year-old advertising and music video producer living near Moscow, and that he suffers with back pain. “I sit a lot, maybe that’s why,” he says. The doctors in Russia couldn’t help him so his parents sent him to Hévíz. The town’s healing reputation clearly extends far beyond the borders of Hungary. The underwater stretching bath is said to ease back problems. One of the men aiming to help pain patients like Marukhinis Dr. Gábor Domokos, the rheumatology and physiotherapy consultant in charge of wellness and therapy at the resort. He wears white sneakers with his white coat and is 68 but looks much younger. That’s not from bathing in the lake, he says (he cycles a lot and hikes in the hills around Lake Balaton), adding that too much significance should not be read into the lake water alone because no precise physiological explanation has been found for how the minerals work. “But we do know that many people who come to us with chronic pain feel better after the treatment.” The secret probably lies in the package: exercise in the warm water, possibly also the water’s composition,and then the peace, the long woodland walks – recently coined as “forest bathing” – physiotherapy, and a good, healthy diet. And also the sleep, I think to myself. Besides intensive curative swimming physicians recommend longwoodland walks Dr. Gábor Domokosis head of wellness and therapy Finally, I test the mud pack: I lie down on my back and am covered from neck to toe in the warm mass and then wrapped in foil and towels like a napkin dumpling. The mud weighs heavyon my body. Not a minute later and I have dozed off once again. Several days later, once I’ve returned home, I open my case and a sulfurous cloud rises to meet me. A most stimulating odor. I pullon my running shoes and head out the door. I’ve had enough sulfur to last me awhile. lead: Have you ever realised that Hévíz and its surroundings are full of interesting people? In the first part of our new series, we are introducing Ed Fouten from South Africa.

tartalom: + 1 Ed. Fouten first visited Hungary 17 years ago and while travelling around the country decided to come live in Hévíz and Cserszegtomaj. He loves and knows the area very much. It is interesting that a South African world-travelled citizen who speaks 7 languages   ​​chose Hévíz as his place of residence and to retire here.   Where did you first hear about Hévíz? My first interest was by meeting a Catholic Hungarian priest at the church I was schooled at and being a good priest his positive interest stayed with me to visit Hungary one day which I did. I was very interested in Hungarian history and culture, so I bought a book with photos and a video. What did you like about buying real estate in Hévíz and its surroundings? The lake Balaton, héviz thetmal lake, beauty, country life, houses, restaurants,market, food, the world-class dentists and the people!   He would tell you a little bit about himself. What did you do in South Africa? I worked as a Finance Manager and Accountant and responsible for Audits. But everyone is interesting! For example, I also read a lot about Hungarian history, culture, architecture music, wines, different foods (paprika and lángos) the language and the lake!   How did you manage to learn Hungarian, which is considered to be one of the hardest languages in the world? I speak seven languages: English, Flemish, African, German, French and Spanish. I learned to speak German here, which was quite easy after learning English, not to mention the many German speaking people living here. I am learning Hungarian constantly. I understand and use a lot of words, however, I haven't managed to speak fluently and consistently yet. Maybe during the quarantine, I will have more time to focus on language learning.   What are you doing now in Hévíz, now that everything you can do here is closed?  I never get bored, I have a lot of friends in the area (Many Hungarian). I learned to cook Hungarian food and I like to host my friends. I go hiking in the area, December is a very nice month. In the summer, during the first wave of the epidemic, I had to travel home to visit my mother who was ill and needed care. My 90-year-old mother is now fine, but unfortunately due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic and worldwide lockdown and borders closed, I had to wait until September to return to Hévíz. I missed it a lot. It was a very sad time not to experience the summer here, but I remained hopeful! I have many friends, in Cserszegtomaj. I have many grape vine trees, from which I make wine with the help of a local friend. Also apricot trees. In the meantime, I'm writing a motivational book on how to live a happy positive life. Another book will be about my travels and architecture, churches, and buildings. Do you have children, do they also visit Hévíz? I am the baptpismal godfather to two children in Keszthely, one is 5 and the other is 7 years old. They are sporty, active and happy children when they see me. They love their bicycles and want my attention to play with them!   Have relatives of your South African friends ever visited you? Yes of course. I used to organize a program for them, to introduce the area, I was accompanied by a group of 10 people. Even now, my acquaintances are waiting at home to end the virus situation and travel to visit me.They want to experience what the place has to offer and the country as a tourist. The friends also come from many other parts of the world, amongst others Canada, the UK, France, Switzerland, Mauritius and many who show interest to come. They want to experience the good dental work done here.   Which season do you like best in Hévíz? All seasons are beautiful. Spring with the freshness, beautiful flowers, summer with so much happening, autumn with the beautiful colors of the trees changing and winter with festivities lights, decorations and markets. Also waiting for some snow and the lake freezing up!   Do you swim in Lake Hévíz? Yes, as much as possible. In summer, seeing the sunset while swimming in lake Balaton and the “Hot air balloon" flying over! The thermal lake is refreshing and peaceful.   What is your favorite place in the area? The whole area has much to offer. The whole country I want to visit which has so much to offer a tourist which I promote.

tartalom: + 1 After 220 years of medical experience and research, the Traditional Hévíz Therapy became a trademark of Hévíz in 2015. The therapy consists of three basic and four complementary treatments using the healing properties of sulphurous magnesium carbonate water. Experts have recognized that a significant part of the hydro, movement, physio- and electrotherapies of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy is suitable for the treatment of certain problems of the Post-Covid syndrome. In addition, the mineral content of Lake Hévíz, the evaporating water and the climatic effect of the 60-hectare Protective Forest surrounding the lake are also very effective in achieving the healing effect. The Post-Covid Care programme will work on the model of the already proven Traditional Hévíz Therapy. tartalom: + 1 Interactive concert by Re-Folk Band Show By Bernadett Gregor and Attila Csengeri Easter Fair Happy Peacetimes of Hévíz Beer Promenade Wine & Gastro Promenade    THE FIRST FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR  We await our guests in mid-March with quality programs. From 12 March to 14 March, you will find many interesting programs that let’s us start spring and the season in the city. On 12 March don’t miss the concert of the band Re-Folk. On Sunday, Bernadett Gregor and Attila Csengeri will welcome the audience with their show “Jöjj kedvesem...” (“Come my Love…”). The concerts will take place in the Ball Room of the City Hall, attendance is free of charge, however, pre-registration is necessary. On 14 March we will celebrate our national holiday with a torchlight procession.   EASTER WILL BE FULL OF SURPRISES  We hope April will bring us a typical nice spring weather for our Easter Fair. From 15 April to 18 April the pedestrian street will be full of life and programs. In addition to the stands with wine and crafts, there will be interesting things for all age groups. Bouncy castles, folk games, egg hunts, activities for the little ones, mystical light shows and concerts for the grown-ups. The Zsödi Duó and Lia Siklódi Szabó and the party band HelloKids will ensure the good atmosphere.    AN OLD FAVOURITE WILL COME BACK  We have been waiting for this for a long time and this year we can finally host our traditional program “The Happy Peacetimes of Hévíz” from 30 April to 1 May. This year our dear program will be held for the tenth time. Of course our traditional parade will take place with vintage cars and classic carriages. Photo booths, games, delicious food and drinks stands will be all around the streets filled with Dixie music to ensure the atmosphere. The real highlight, however, will be the concert by the Mystery Gang. As part of the celebrations on May 1st, we will commemorate the proclamation of Hévíz as a city.    EVEN JULY WILL NOT BE BORING  For beer lovers, we recommend our event in July: from 14 July to 17 July, the pedestrian zone will be filled with famous and handcrafted beers. In addition to the drink, of course, the individual snacks that go with the respective beer should not be missing. After some drinks and some food, head towards the stage on Rákóczi Street, where concerts will heat up the atmosphere. More details about the program will be revealed soon, keep an eye out.    AUGUST IS ALL ABOUT WINE  For the summer heat, our crowd favourite Wine and Gastro Promenade will return too. For the program we await lovers of wine and everyone who would like to feel how a big festival feels like in Hévíz. In addition to tasting the most delicious wines, there will be many concerts and programs for children as well. Details to come soon!   We've only mentioned the biggest names and festivals, but of course there will be other concerts and parties throughout the year. So, before you set off, it's worth checking our Facebook page and website for the most up-to-date information.
