The aim of the event is to showcase the diversity of the Balaton region and to further strengthen Hévíz’s position as a leading destination in international health tourism.

tartalom: + 1 While swimming in Lake Hévíz, or simply floating in its soothing waters, a thought inevitably crosses the bather’s mind: what might be happening beneath us right now, what lies hidden inthe depths below the surface? This invisible world, the mystery of the unknown, has stirred human imagination for thousands of years. But what do we actually know about the underwater world of the lake? A historical turning point that changed everything… By the late 1970s, the previously steady and peaceful development of Hévíz was disrupted by an unexpected and increasingly intense conflict. This was the so-called “Hévíz versus Nyirád”debate, the roots of which date back to the 1950s. During the forced industrialisation following World War II, heavy industry as well as mineral extraction were given priority, andbauxite mining became increasingly significant in the karst regions of Transdanubia –including the catchment area of Lake Balaton.Initially, mining took place above the karst water level, but it soon extended deeper and deeper. At the time, no one suspected that the consequences would one day affect Lake Hévíz.However, the impacts gradually became evident: the significant decline in the lake’s water yield observed in the 1970s could no longer be explained by natural fluctuations. It was aclear warning sign that called for urgent intervention.The investigation into the effects of bauxite mining and karst water extraction in Nyirád was not merely an attempt to resolve an environmental conflict, but the beginning of a scientificdiscovery process that fundamentally reshaped our understanding of Lake Hévíz. Research launched in 1972 revealed that the lake is fed by deep karst waters, not from a single source but from a complex cave system beneath it. Its water supply originates from distant areas and is directly connected to mining activities in the Nyirád region.       The divers of Lake Hévíz back then….   In order to refine earlier, approximate data, divers were also involved in mapping the depths of the lake. This step marked the beginning of cave exploration in Hévíz, as it was the first attempt to directly explore the source of the lake and understand its structure. As the culmination of the project, on 10 February 1975, two members of the Amphora Diving Club, István Plózer and Lajos Csávosi, reached the spring cavern—often referred to as a crater. But what do we know today, more than 50 years after this major breakthrough? Nearly five decades after the first explorations, research has gained new momentum. Following consultations between the nature conservation experts of the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate and the Hévíz St. Andrew Rheumatology Hospital and Thermal Bath, a new phase of investigations into the cave system of Lake Hévíz has begun.This time, the aim is to carry out geodetically precise measurements of five additional smaller caves that had already been identified fifty years ago during the exploration of the spring cave, in the area beneath the so-called “gossip benches”. On 17 March 2026, two divers from the Balaton Uplands National Park—responsible for the management of Lake Hévíz—descended to the entrances of the caves. Their task was to determine the exact positions (geographical coordinates) of the cave entrances using geodetic-grade GNSS equipment operated by experts in a boat on the surface, aided by buoys placed in the depths. However, carrying out the measurements proved to be far from simple. The lake’s water system is fed by waters of different origins: warm thermal water rising from the depths and cooler karst water flowing in laterally. The processes taking place below are not static—the water is in constant motion, with currents varying in both direction and intensity. During the investigation, persistent winds further complicated the coordinated work of the teams operating above and below the surface. Despite these challenges, the mission was successfully completed, and the divers also captured spectacular footage of the caves.       …and now. Lake Hévíz was first granted protected status in 1993, and in 2006 the originally designated conservation area was further expanded. One of the key objectives of the current research is toensure that, based on precise measurements, all known caves of the lake can be officially registered in the national cave registry, thereby strengthening the site’s scientific andconservation significance. The end? After all this, it is fair to ask: are there still new chapters to come, or have we reached the end of the story? Perhaps the most intriguing question is not what we have discovered so far—butwhat might still await us beneath the surface. One thing, however, is certain: the future—whether viewed in a narrower or broader terms—will bring changes that will inevitably shape this unique natural system. The story of Lake Hévíz is therefore far from finished. A Unique Natural Environment in Hévíz The uniqueness of Lake Hévíz lies in the fact that its thermal water originates from precipitation that fell more than 12,000 years ago. The lake’s continuous water supply and constant temperature have created a special microclimate that supports the survival of many rare and protected species. Thanks to the warm water and the surrounding marshlands, the ecosystem around the lake is considered unique in Hungary. tartalom: + 1 In the increasingly competitive international tourism market, it is no longer sufficient for destinations to rely solely on online presence or traditional tourist attractions. Successful destinations are progressively building their brands on experience-based marketing, cultural connections, and the power of personal encounters. For Hévíz, it was therefore of particular significance that our town had the opportunity to introduce itself in the Slovenian capital for the first time as the guest of honour of the 3rd Liszt Cultural Days. The invitation to participate in the event was extended by the Liszt Institute, the cultural institution of the Embassy of Hungary in Ljubljana. Thanks to this prestigious request, Hévíz was represented throughout the entire five-day cultural programme series. This provided an excellent occasion for the town to showcase itself to both Slovenian and Hungarian audiences not only as a spa destination renowned for its thermal lake, but also as a culturally open, modern, and diverse tourism destination. The prestigious function opened with a concert by violin artist Jenő Sallai Jr. On Wednesday’s Health Day, historian Dr. Endre Szántó gave a presentation about the history of the Town of Hévíz and the formation of Lake Hévíz, while György Zoltán Hódi, director of the Amphora Medical Health Centre, introduced the town’s health tourism sector. The afternoon atmosphere was enriched by performances from members of the Nagyváthy Folk Dance Ensemble from Keszthely under the leadership of András Hardi, followed by the Jazzy Pop duo of Lia Szabó Siklódi and Endre Varga. Meanwhile, at the outdoor street festival, the Hévíz Tourinform Office also operated its own stand to showcase the town’s tourism appeal and accommodation selection. However, the guest-of-honour role was not only an important cultural representation opportunity, but also granted a valuable platform for diplomatic and professional networking. During the week, the delegation of Hévíz met personally with Mitja Predovnik, Deputy CEO of Visit Ljubljana, the city’s destination management organisation. In addition, the delegation was welcomed by Karmen Novarlič, Head of the Business Communication Department of the Slovenian Tourist Board, and Milena Pelipenko, Director of the Alpe–Adria Fair, Slovenia’s largest tourism, camping, and leisure exhibition. Discussions focused on prospective cooperation and the exchange of professional experiences. During the meetings, the possibility was also raised that Hévíz could potentially join the renowned tourism fair in the near future, which could open up new international presentation and promotional opportunities for the spa town within the Central European tourism market. Such discussions are particularly valuable for a tourism destination, as the continuous development and strengthening of international partnerships play key role in enhancing the town’s competitiveness. Cultural events also enable far more direct and personal networking channels than traditional business meetings and exhibitions. From a tourism perspective, the 3rd Liszt Cultural Days marked an important milestone for Hévíz, reinforcing the message that the town is not only a renowned health tourism hub, but also a dynamic and increasingly visible international destination rich in experiences. Rich folk customs, communal traditions, cultural festivities, spring farewell rituals, and early summer opening celebrations have long formed an inseparable part of this holiday. Today, the long weekend is widely associated with relaxation, excursions, and family activities — especially in tourism-oriented destinations such as Hévíz and the Balaton region, where Pentecost also signals the approaching start of the summer season.

tartalom: + 1 The Origins of Pentecost in Christian Tradition According to Christian belief, Pentecost marks the fiftieth day following Easter. More than a religious commemoration, it represents a defining moment in both human and ecclesiastical history. The Bible recounts that forty days after His crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. Before departing, however, He promised His disciples that they would not remain alone: the Holy Spirit would come to guide them. The disciples had gathered in Jerusalem when, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, a mighty rushing wind filled the place and tongues of fire appeared above them. At that moment, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, receiving courage, faith, and spiritual strength. The apostles, once fearful and hidden from the public eye, suddenly began proclaiming the teachings of Jesus openly. One of the most remarkable elements of the biblical narrative is that the apostles spoke in different languages, allowing visitors who had arrived in Jerusalem from many regions to understand the message in their own native tongue. In Christian interpretation, this symbolizes that the Gospel is intended for all nations and all people. For this reason, Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the Church. Following the sermon of Saint Peter, tradition holds that thousands joined the first Christian community, marking the beginning of Christianity’s worldwide expansion. Customs and Folk Traditions Over the centuries, Pentecost evolved into a celebration not only of faith but also of renewal, togetherness, and joy. In Hungary, numerous folk customs are connected to the holiday, many of which became deeply rooted in national tradition, particularly within rural communities. Among the most famous are the traditions of the Pentecost King and Pentecost Queen. The Election of the Pentecost King and the Queen’s Procession One of the best-known customs was the selection of the Pentecost King. Young men from the village competed in various contests of skill and endurance, including horseback riding, wrestling, and athletic games. The winner enjoyed special privileges for an entire year, such as complimentary drinks at the tavern or honorary invitations to local gatherings. The Hungarian expression “Pentecost kingdom” still survives today as a phrase describing short-lived success or temporary authority. Among young women, the tradition of the Pentecost Queen Procession fulfilled a similar symbolic role, closely linked to fertility, prosperity, and the rebirth of nature. During the ritual, groups of girls visited homes accompanied by a chosen “Pentecost Queen.” Typically portrayed by the youngest or most beautiful girl, she wore white garments, floral wreaths, and often a veil or decorative shawl. Singing as they moved through the village, the participants offered blessings and wishes for abundant harvests and prosperity. In certain regions, the queen was lifted high into the air or ceremonially carried around the settlement, emphasizing the ritual’s symbolic meaning. lead: The 12th edition of the More Than a Neighbour – Hungarian Cultural Week was held in Bratislava, an event that has evolved into much more than a cultural festival. Today, it stands as one of the most significant meeting points of Hungarian–Slovak relations. As a true melting pot of culture, the festival attracts thousands of visitors every year, offering concerts, exhibitions, gastronomic experiences and tourism presentations that showcase the rich values of Hungary. It was within this vibrant setting that Hévíz introduced itself to visitors in neighbouring Slovakia. In recent years, Slovakia has been one of the town's important source markets, making the event an excellent opportunity to strengthen existing ties and present the destination's latest tourism offerings.

tartalom: + 1 The festival series began on 8 June with a classical music concert held in the building of the Slovak Radio. During the first days of the week, the focus was primarily on indoor events, with professional forums, exhibitions and presentations taking place at various venues across the capital. The festival’s spectacular open-air programme started on Thursday at Bratislava’s Main Square, where artistic, gastronomic and community events followed over the course of three days. Throughout the three-day outdoor event, numerous visitors stopped by the Hévíz stand. Right next to us, the town of Zalakaros was also represented, creating an excellent opportunity for two members of the Hévíz–Zalakaros–Kehidakustány Thermal Triangle initiative, launched last year, to jointly promote their shared development concept. The long-term objective is to create an integrated tourism offer in which the three destinations mutually complement and strengthen one another on the international market. Although all three spa towns are built around the same natural treasure – thermal water – each offers a distinct character and visitor experience. Hévíz is internationally renowned as a centre for health preservation, healing and regeneration. Zalakaros is a stronghold of family-friendly experiences and active recreation, while Kehidakustány is known for its welcoming atmosphere and wellness experiences tailored to families. Together, however, they have the potential to become a competitive and attractive tourism product within the European destination market for years to come. With the growing dominance of digital platforms, opportunities based on personal encounters and authentic experiences have gained a new significance. At the same time, the Thermal Triangle concept extends far beyond a marketing strategy. Its broader purpose is to foster a regional mindset that encourages visitors to discover multiple destinations, experiences and services within a single journey. In this regard, the Slovak market is of particular importance, as the West Balaton region is both easily accessible and highly attractive to travellers from Slovakia due to its geographical proximity. lead: On one of the hottest days of the summer season, representatives of the profession gathered for a ceremonial event at the Hévíz Lake Bath. Nine local institutions and hotels received the Hévíz Traditional Cure certification, guaranteeing guests the highest level of authentic therapeutic quality for the next two years.

tartalom: + 1 The Hévíz Traditional Cure certification system was established by the town of Hévíz in 2015. The initiative aims to officially accredit service providers that offer classic therapies based on the local medicinal thermal water. The rigorous professional criteria were developed by a committee of renowned physicians. Strict Criteria for Maximum Quality To obtain the trademark, institutions must undergo a comprehensive review every two years. A fundamental requirement for certification is full compliance with all seven of the following criteria: Certified medicinal-water bathing: The institution has its own thermal pool supplied with Hévíz medicinal water. Regulated pool temperature: The water temperature is between 25 and 38 °C, while bathing time is determined by a medical specialist as part of an individually tailored treatment plan. Access to the Lake Bath: Patients are provided with the opportunity to bathe in the Hévíz medicinal lake, including at an external location if necessary. Hévíz mud treatments: Hévíz medicinal mud packs or mud baths are available on site. Precisely controlled mud packs: The temperature of the mud may not exceed 42 °C, and the duration of the treatment is also determined by a medical specialist. Weight-bath therapy: The institution offers the traditional weight-bath treatment among its services. Controlled weight-bath parameters: The pool water is maintained at 34–36 °C; the duration of the treatment, the amount and distribution of the weights, and the suspension points are prescribed by a medical specialist. The purpose of the strict inspection process is to ensure that guests can be confident that whichever accredited facility they choose, they will receive the same outstanding and consistent level of quality. In this way, the fundamental requirements of Hévíz therapeutic medicine—with a history spanning more than 220 years and now recognised as a Hungarikum—are guaranteed at every certified service provider. Expert Audits and the Award Recipients The 2026 certification process was coordinated by Hévízi Turisztikai Nonprofit Kft., the organisation responsible for managing the trademark. On-site audits were carried out by an expert committee consisting of renowned chief rheumatologists: Dr Gábor Domokos (Hévíz St Andrew Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases and Spa), Dr Veronika Moll (Hotel Európa Fit), and Dr Géza Kurth (NaturMed Hotel Carbona). tartalom: + 1 During his summer filming trip, Hauzer Viliam, the Hungarian correspondent for Slovak Television (STVR), was looking for special stories and interesting personalities from the Lake Balaton region. As one of the stops on the late-July filming tour, the crew also visited Hévíz, where HéVIPart stepped in front of the camera. For the reports, they were looking for people and topics with genuine ties to the region: craftspeople, keepers of local traditions, distinctive local personalities, people with interesting life stories, and stories connected to Lake Balaton that could bring the region closer to viewers in just a few minutes. HéVIPart was also selected for the series, giving Hévíz the opportunity to appear on Slovak Television through a local story. The segment featuring HéVIPart starts at 43:52. tartalom: + 1 Hévíz and Sárvár have reached another important milestone in the development of sustainable tourism: both towns have received the international Green Destinations Bronze Award. The sustainability performance of these two major Hungarian spa destinations was assessed through an evaluation process covering more than eighty criteria and an independent on-site audit. The result not only provides international recognition, but also identifies specific areas for further development in Hévíz and Sárvár. The Green Destinations Standard is based on international requirements for sustainable destination management and is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Under the Green Destinations Award system, destination performance is assessed across six major themes, including Destination Management, Nature & Scenery, Environment & Climate, Culture & Tradition, Social Well-being, and Business & Communication. The assessment process involved far more than compiling documentation. Following a preliminary self-assessment and technical review, an independent auditor visited both towns, examining documents and sites and consulting representatives of tourism, local government, nature conservation, culture and other local sectors. In Sárvár, for example, the on-site audit programme included the Tourinform office, the Nádasdy Cultural Centre, the Sárvár Spa and Wellness Centre, a hotel and the arboretum. Protection of natural assets stood out in Hévíz Hévíz achieved the Bronze Award with an overall score of 6.8. Its highest audit score was 8.8 in Nature & Scenery, while it received 8.3 points in Culture & Tradition. The expert assessment highlighted the system for protecting species, habitats and ecosystems, cooperation between national and local stakeholders, and nature conservation monitoring. Cultural heritage also received a strong assessment, while in destination management the auditor recognised the growing importance of sustainability in tourism development. The assessment also covered initiatives supporting the local economy and more sustainable tourism services. Through the CROSSDEST project, tourism businesses in Hévíz are receiving support to prepare for the Good Travel Seal scheme developed by Green Destinations for tourism businesses. The auditor regarded this as a good starting point and encouraged the continuation of the programme in the longer term and its expansion to a wider range of businesses. “For us, the Green Destinations recognition does not mark the end of a completed process; rather, it confirms that we have started moving in the right direction. Lake Hévíz, the town’s unique natural asset, is both a tourism attraction and a heritage resource that we have a long-term responsibility to preserve. It is particularly important to us that the audit identified the protection of natural assets as one of our strongest areas. Our next task is to ensure that sustainability becomes increasingly embedded in the day-to-day operations of local tourism service providers.” – Krisztina Böröczné Bolla, Head of Marketing, Hévíz Tourism Nonprofit Ltd. Preserving culture and traditions is one of Sárvár’s greatest strengths Sárvár achieved the Bronze Award with an overall score of 6.7. It received 9.2 points in Culture & Tradition, the highest of its six assessed themes, and scored 8.1 in Nature & Scenery. The auditor gave particularly positive recognition to the system for safeguarding cultural heritage and to the way local cultural institutions, associations and civil society organisations work together to keep traditions alive. The audit cites traditional events as examples and also notes the involvement of local residents and young people. In nature conservation, the assessment highlighted the protection of species and habitats and the close cooperation between national and local nature conservation stakeholders. In recent years, Sárvár has consciously begun to integrate sustainability into tourism development: in 2025, it adopted a sustainable destination management strategy and a visitor management plan. The auditor also regarded the use of the I-Dest sustainability indicator system as a positive initiative; ten local businesses currently participate in its pilot phase. The CROSSDEST project has also delivered tangible results in this area: ten tourism businesses in Sárvár are currently being prepared to obtain the Good Travel Seal. According to the auditor, the business development and awareness-raising activities launched within the project represent the right direction; the next step is to ensure their long-term continuation and involve additional local service providers. “Tourism in Sárvár is built on a long tradition, so for us sustainability also means preserving our values in a way that keeps them alive for future generations. We are particularly proud that the independent audit rated Culture & Tradition as our strongest area. At the same time, the Bronze Award is not a final destination: it also shows us precisely where further development is needed,” said Ferenc Haller, Managing Director of Sárvár Tourist & TDM Nonprofit Ltd. Not just a title, but a development process One of the key features of the Green Destinations Award is that it does not assess only what has already been achieved. The audit also identifies areas where further development is needed, making the assessment a professional roadmap for the next period. Within the Green Destinations system, the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Award levels indicate different levels of compliance with the Standard and serve as milestones on the path towards full Green Destinations Certification. For Hévíz and Sárvár, the audit identified, among other priorities, the need to further strengthen measurable sustainability targets and regular monitoring, broaden the involvement of local stakeholders, and communicate sustainability results more visibly. In the case of Sárvár, for example, the auditor’s summary emphasises that many positive initiatives are already in place, while the measurement and documentation of their results still need to be further developed. The international recognition also opens up new opportunities in terms of communication. Awarded destinations become part of Green Destinations’ international communications and network, gain opportunities to be featured on the organisation’s platforms presenting sustainable destinations, and are automatically pre-qualified for the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories programme. International recognition through cross-border cooperation Hévíz and Sárvár prepared for Green Destinations within the framework of the CROSSDEST – Cross-border destination development for inclusive and sustainable tourism in the Slovenian–Hungarian border region project. The project aims to ensure that sustainability is reflected not only in destination strategies but also in the specific services used by visitors. To this end, at least 40 tourism service providers in the programme area are being prepared to obtain the Good Travel Seal, while the development of attractions and local producers is also part of the programme. The achievement of the two towns therefore goes beyond the individual success of Hévíz and Sárvár: it demonstrates that sustainable tourism is not a single investment or campaign, but the result of long-term joint efforts by the destination, the local community and tourism businesses. The Green Destinations Award is followed every two years by an independent review of performance and progress, meaning that the recognition also comes with an expectation of continued improvement. Over the past 20 years, the office has continuously expanded its offering so that every visitor – whether seeking healing, travelling with young children or enjoying an active holiday – can make the most of their stay in Hévíz. What services does the Hévíz Tourinform Office offer visitors? Personalised information and publications: free maps, multilingual programme booklets and handy guides presenting attractions in Hévíz and the surrounding area. Active tourism and bicycle rental: well-maintained conventional bicycles and e-bikes, as well as children’s bicycles, for tours around Hévíz and in the Balaton Uplands. The office now operates a fleet of more than 60 bicycles, available for rent throughout the year. Ticket sales and programme organisation: sale of admission tickets for local events and regional experience programmes. Local souvenirs and handcrafted products: unique mementos of Hévíz, delicacies from local producers, small indulgent items and gifts. Guest-friendly convenience services: free Wi-Fi, luggage storage, an accessible guest area, and payment by bank card and SZÉP card. The pulse of the city – active involvement in everyday life in Hévíz The Tourinform Office not only serves tourism, but also connects its stakeholders and visitors. Today, under the auspices of Hévízi Turisztikai Nonprofit Kft., the office team participates in the city’s tourism as a key information channel and a direct feedback point. Together with a team of local guides, they coordinate the highly popular guided city walks, including walks on the history of the spa, geobotanical walks and atmospheric evening torchlight walks. The office works closely with local service providers: the Lake Spa, accommodation providers, restaurants, shops, travel agencies and local producers. It therefore forms a genuine bridge between the city’s service providers and the guests arriving in Hévíz. Milestones The largest-scale transformation of the past 20 years took place in June 2024. Thanks to a comprehensive development project, the office was completely renewed, receiving an accessible, modern interior equipped with 21st-century technology. The new national Tourinform visual identity and digital tools have made welcoming guests even more convenient and seamless, while preserving the direct, warm atmosphere that has drawn visitors here for decades. Looking back 2006 – The Hévíz Tourism Marketing Association is founded and opens the Tourinform Office in the autumn. 2009 – The office’s operator, now named the Hévíz Tourism Destination Management Association (formerly HTME), wins its first TDM grant, under which some of the office’s equipment is renewed. 2012 – A cycling centre is established under the Western Transdanubia Operational Programme. 2015 – An off-site Tourinform InfoPoint opens at the large car park at the beginning of Széchenyi Street. 2016 – The TDM Association operating Tourinform once again receives the Bicycle-Friendly Workplace title. 2019 – New electric bicycles arrive at the office in the spring, expanding the range of services. 2019 – As a new member of the Balaton E-bike Charging Network, the Hévíz Tourinform Office now also offers electric bicycle charging. 2020 – Hévízi Turisztikai Nonprofit Kft. takes over operation of the Tourinform Office from the Tourism Association. 2020 – The office staff remain available to guests by telephone and through online channels during quarantine. 2021 – Thanks to the Kisfaludy2030 tourism grant, both the furniture used to serve guests and the office’s bicycle fleet are expanded. 2024 – The office is renovated inside and out in the spring. Furniture acquired previously is placed in a modern setting, and the selection of e-bikes is expanded by autumn thanks to further grant funding. The office performs among the best nationwide, completing the national quality assurance audit with a score of 95 percent. 2025 – The Hévíz Tourinform Office receives the Visit Hungary divisional professional award. What do these 20 years mean in figures today? An annual average of more than 25,000 in-person enquiries, more than 3,000 telephone enquiries and more than 2,000 enquiries by email. Local residents, as well as guests, can use 14 different services. Numerous professional meetings and forums, both attended and organised, as well as continuous professional work within the office’s data collection area. Consistently above-average performance during annual professional inspections. Thousands of kilometres travelled on the bicycles – and experiences for the guests. Over the years, thousands of free maps, programme booklets, local guides and experience guides have been published. With heart and soul for Hévíz Whether it is good advice, a bicycle for rent, a delicious local product or simply a kind word, the Hévíz Tourinform Office has welcomed visitors to the city with unwavering dedication for 20 years.
