lead: Few people know that in the last century, a grand synagogue stood in what was once Hévízfürdő. It served not only as a sacred place for the local Jewish community but also for the many visiting spa guests. Although the building is no longer visible today, the city still preserves its memory.

tartalom: + 1 The Birth of a House of Prayer – Hévíz’s Religious Diversity In the early 20th century, many Jewish guests came to Hévíz to enjoy the healing effects of the lake. As religious visitors needed a place to pray, a modest prayer house was built in 1905 next to the lake's outflow channel, near Ignác Lusztig’s guesthouse called “Jerusalem.” However, the small building quickly became too cramped as the spa resort grew in popularity. (Sharp-eyed readers may spot the prayer house's location on this 1925 map) By the late 1920s, the growing community and increasing number of spa visitors made it necessary to build a larger, more representative synagogue. One of the key initiators of the new building was Dr. Adolf Kertész, a lawyer from Budapest who was a devoted supporter of Hévíz’s development and religious life. He submitted a request to Prince Tasziló Festetics II, who generously provided land for the synagogue free of charge. Fundraising began in 1929, and in 1930 the Israelite Synagogue Association of Hévízfürdő was established. It operated fully independently but functioned as a branch of the Keszthely Jewish community. Construction was completed in 1933 at a cost of approximately 20,000 pengő. The town also contributed: the municipal council of Hévízszentandrás donated 1,000 pengő, recognizing the importance of boosting tourism. 1933 – A Ceremonial Inauguration in a Growing Town The Hévíz synagogue was officially inaugurated on July 2, 1933. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Lajos Glück, chief rabbi of Keszthely, who gave the opening address. Distinguished figures from the spa town and local community were also present, including Sándor Stern, the synagogue’s first trustee, and Mór Weisz, president of the local Jewish community. The event attracted great interest and was significant not only for locals but for visiting spa guests as well. Caught in the Storm of History Hévíz was not spared the tragedies of World War II. In 1944, the Jewish community was deported, and many never returned. Several members from Hévíz were taken to Auschwitz. According to records, Dr. Vilmos Schulhof, Hévíz’s spa physician, was also among the Holocaust victims. Dr. Schulhof played a vital role not only as a doctor but also as a community leader. Many of the synagogue’s former visitors and supporters perished in concentration camps, including Mór Weisz, Sándor Stern, and other local residents. After the war, the abandoned synagogue remained empty and slowly fell into ruin. By the late 1960s, it was in a dilapidated state and was eventually demolished in 1977. For decades, nothing stood on the site, as if a piece of history had vanished without a trace. Preserving the Memory Fortunately, the city of Hévíz did not forget its past. In 2000, a memorial was erected on the site of the former synagogue. Its design recalls the original building and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. The plans were developed with the help of city officials and local historians, and Chief Rabbi Tamás Raj delivered the speech at the unveiling ceremony. This quiet yet powerful memorial site continues to invite visitors to pay tribute to those who were once an integral part of Hévíz’s community. Brought Back to Life – Virtually Though the synagogue no longer stands, today it is possible to explore it through a virtual tour. cím: From Textile Sea to Tiny Bikini! The Evolution of Swimwear at the Turn of the 20th Century

lead: When seaside vacations became fashionable in the second half of the 19th century, not only the etiquette but also the attire of bathing was strictly regulated. Wearing a swimsuit meant covering up, not showing off. Yet over the following decades, the baggy skirts disappeared, and swimsuits slowly started to resemble what we know today.

tartalom: + 1 Since when do we go to the beach to "swim and sunbathe"? Bathing became a trend in Europe—especially in England and France—from the mid-19th century. Brighton, Biarritz, Scheveningen: these places saw the birth of the first “bathing fashions.” Although trends didn’t spread nearly as fast as they do today via Insta posts and social media, Hungary wasn’t far behind the Western bathing culture. The first bathing house on Lake Balaton opened in 1864 in Keszthely (for men), followed by similar structures in Balatonfüred and Siófok. These were more like changing cabins built onto piers, with separate facilities for men and women. Entering the water was guided more by etiquette and medical advice than by fun. We can proudly say that therapeutic spas like Hévíz introduced bath cabins much earlier, especially upon medical recommendation. In Hévíz, the first bathhouse on stilts was already built in 1795—meaning that bathers came to Lake Hévíz even before Lake Balaton became popular.   Long Skirts and Puffy Trousers But back to our main topic—what did our predecessors actually consider "swimwear"? Primarily, it was an outfit designed for walking along the beach. Going into the water or sunbathing was out of the question. The seashore was mainly recommended for the benefit of salty sea air. The beach attire covered nearly every part of the body, and parasols were a must-have for ladies, as tanned skin was not appropriate in aristocratic and bourgeois circles. Simply put, it was considered too “common.” Some, of course, couldn’t resist the temptation of the water. For them, swimming wasn’t even an option—they were lucky if they didn’t get too wet in their "bathing" outfits, which looked something like this: Long skirt – down to the ankles, to hide the legs Baggy trousers underneath – for modesty Waist belt or drawstring – to keep the dress in place in the water Long-sleeved blouse – often with a collar Hat or head covering – to protect from the sun Materials: flannel, linen, or thick wool. These fabrics held their shape well when dry—but became extremely heavy when wet! Light colors were typically chosen, since the many layers already made the outfits warm enough—dark colors would’ve made things even worse.   Subtle Modernization, or the Era When Calves No Longer Had to Be Hidden By the end of the 19th century, expectations began to change. As more people ventured into the water, skirts became shorter—now only just below the knees—so the trousers underneath also became shorter and less baggy. Eventually, separate skirts and blouses were replaced by a single-piece tunic-style garment for simplicity and safety. The new swimwear often featured large collars and sailor-style motifs. Colors were mostly navy blue or black, often with stripes. The darker colors helped ensure the thinner garments remained opaque when wet. In the 1910s–1920s, swimsuits began shrinking rapidly Starting in the 1910s, swimming gained popularity—especially among women. Swimwear fashion followed this shift toward practicality, led by figures like Australian swimming champion and actress Annette Kellerman. In 1907, she was even arrested in the U.S. for wearing a one-piece, body-hugging swimsuit. That event only added fuel to the fire, accelerating the modern transformation of swimwear, which coincided with the rise of women’s emancipation. Sleeveless tops appeared almost out of nowhere (even in casual wear), and swimsuits were sometimes one-piece, sometimes two-piece. Trousers were shortened to mid-thigh, and eventually to much shorter lengths. The resulting scandal led to enforced swimsuit regulations, including mandatory length measurements—sometimes checked with tape measures! Wool still dominated in materials, but now with thinner weaves. Large hats were replaced by headscarves or swim caps, not for sun protection but to keep hair in place. Still, the suits remained heavy (and dark), especially when wet.   Elastic Fabric Revolutionizes Swimwear in the 1920s–30s This change wasn’t driven primarily by new attitudes, but by a new invention: Lastex, a rubber-threaded textile. Thanks to this material, swimsuits in the 1920s became form-fitting. Skirts disappeared completely, and necklines and backlines grew bolder. The elastic fabric allowed for snug-fitting, stretchy, and—most importantly—fast-drying swimsuits. Less fabric was needed, and color variety exploded on the beaches. Swimwear became not only practical but sexy, too. Film stars of the 1930s—like Jean Harlow or Greta Garbo—graced magazine covers in their swimsuits. Swimwear Fashion at Lake Balaton and in Hévíz Hungarian beach towns like those along Lake Balaton and Hévíz also adopted international swimwear trends. By the late 1920s, women were wearing shorter, one-piece swimsuits, and men wore tank-top-style suits. At Lake Hévíz, the clothing remained more conservative due to its medicinal purpose, but sportier swimsuits also became increasingly popular. What Came Next? After World War II, everything changed. You can use the playgrounds and sports fields, but the buffets and restrooms are only open during the beach season. In the late spring period, you should expect that renovations, weeding, flower planting, and toys are being renovated, but by the beginning of June, almost all beaches can be visited. There are entrance tickets, where they start collecting from June 1, and where they start collecting from the beginning of the school holidays. In terms of accessibility, a common feature of the beaches in the area is that they are easy to find. By bicycle, the cash desks are almost within reach of the Balaton bicycle path, and by car, of course, you can park for free next to every beach. Moreover, with the exception of the dog beach and the Libás beach, all other beaches are close to the local train station, so if you can, you can even go by train.   Lake Hévíz, as a uniqueness, is a spa, lake spa and beach spa all in one Unique in the world, Lake Hévíz combines thermal spas and beach spas in such a way that none of them really exist. Due to its uniqueness, you can bathe in the natural thermal spring all year round, and thanks to the covered parts, you can enjoy the experience of warm water even in pouring rain or snow. From the point of view that you can swim in a real, natural, warm water lake and relax and sunbathe on its shore, it is more like a beach, but based on the services, opening hours and prices based on medicinal water, it can be classified more like a thermal spa. You definitely have to try it once, because it is really unique and special, completely different from all the usual beaches and adventure pools! Adventure baths and slide park Near Hévíz, we have to write about 3 major thermal and adventure baths and a slide park. Closer to Hévíz is the Kehida Thermal Bath in Kehidakustány, many people also visit the Karos Spa complex in Zalakaros, and Zalaszentgrót also has a thermal and adventure bath. Perhaps a little further, in Zalaegerszeg there is an Aquacity and slide park. The common feature of the first three thermal spas is that their indoor pools are open all year round, but in the summer season they also open their outdoor beach with adventure park, slides and a large green surface to the public. These baths, although they cannot be called classic beaches, can be visited regardless of the weather, since even if we cannot use the outdoor experiences, the indoor pools are still open. Another important feature they have in common is that they have pools with medicinal water and heated normal water pools. Aquacity, located next to the last-mentioned Zalaegerszeg, only operates in the summer, during the school holidays. It does not have an indoor bath, only outdoor pools and numerous slides, among which all ages can find their favorite. At the same time, just like the Balaton beaches, this adventure bath is only visited in nice, summer weather. The ticket prices of the spas and beaches do not reflect the quality of the services! On the slightly more expensive beaches, the extra program options and extra experience elements provide the basis for a higher price category, while the slightly cheaper beaches are typically smaller, more family-friendly, and offer fewer but equally high-quality services. In addition, all the classic beaches listed here (except for dogs and naturists) have Blue Wave certification and are multiple category winners (child-friendly beach, sporty beach, green beach). The different types of ticket prices mean that entrance tickets to most beaches in the pre-summer season, in June, are cheaper than in July and August.

tartalom: + 1 Hévíz has been waiting for the worthy conclusion of the investment for a long time The matter of the old bus stop and the investment in the area of Kölcsey Street has been dragging on in the spa town for many years. As Bálint Nagy, Member of Parliament and Secretary of State for Transport, said at the closing ceremony of the project: the process started in 2019, with the announcement of the then winning GINOP tender, and it just came to an end this weekend. The government then approved the Hévíz development project with a grant of 1.2 billion forints, with the aim of creating a central square worthy of the city's reputation and tourist role near the Lake Spa. However, the implementation did not go according to plan. The work process was slowed down and made more difficult by several factors. In recent years, it has been necessary to modify both the professional content and the budget of the original plans on several occasions. Over the years, the demands of residents, guests and entrepreneurs for a dignified conclusion to the protracted works have increased. Member of Parliament Bálint Nagy highlighted: The Hévíz main square project is an excellent example of how, if there is truly a common will and true cooperation, even the most impossible situations can be solved. This positive example of cooperation also gives hope that the Lake Spa developments that will soon be launched will also be successful.   In his speech, Péter Naszádos, Mayor of Hévíz, emphasized the power of cooperation and joint work. The municipality considers the implementation of this very important investment for the city as a victory, as well as the fact that the city has closed six tenders from state, EU and its own sources in the past 9 months. The aim of the development was to create a livable, modern, community and tourist-valuable environment in Hévíz. Fountain, spacious square, elegant paving and vegetation The municipality terminated the contract with the previous contractor of the now handed over square in 2023. The new public procurement - which took place in three months - was won by the local Possibuild Kft. The investment, which was launched from EU funds, ultimately had to be supplemented with government support. As part of the works, the old bus station building was demolished, and an event space was created in its place with a fountain, sculptures, green islands, street furniture and bicycle racks. The square was equipped with a music pavilion and technical structures that will enable the holding of larger events and festivals. The work of the Munkácsy Award-winning sculptor Ferenc Farkas, a pair of full-length bronze statues depicting Count György I. Festetics and Count György II. Festetics, has been placed in front of the summer entrance to the Hévíz Lake Baths.   In order to shade the event space, solar sails will be installed in the near future. The new event space in Hévíz will have a festival atmosphere on the first weekend! To the delight of the residents and guests, the city of Hévíz is organizing a large-scale “space-occupying” festival titled “The Space Belongs to Us!”. On the morning of July 18, professional performances will be held in the Town Hall’s Ceremonial Hall, and various outdoor exhibitions will be on display on the square. In the evening, a BIKINI concert, laser and light show, and DJ Belo await guests looking to have fun and/or get nostalgic in the area of the former bus stop and Rizling Platz. The concerts will continue on Saturday and Sunday. There will be music, rock ballet, soloists and even a folklore show. The event will be accompanied by a food and craft fair on all three days. During this period, bathing is only possible outdoors, and the Lake Bath can only be accessed through the Ady Street entrance, via the Festetics Bathhouse. Opening hours During the winter season, the opening hours are adjusted to the shorter daylight: 26 October 2025 – 8 February 2026: 8:30 – 16:30 (last bathing time: 16:00) 9 February – 29 March 2026: 9:00 – 17:30 (last bathing time: 17:00) The Indoor Bath and Therapy Centre’s swimming pool is available with extended hours from 3 November: Monday – Friday: 7:00 – 18:00 Weekends: 8:00 – 18:00 Available services During the winter season, guests can continue to enjoy: the services of the Festetics Bathhouse and Therapy Department the wellness area (included in the ticket price) the offerings of the Vitál Bar and the Medio Buffet the indoor relaxation areas and the lakeshore section around the Festetics Bathhouse For guests with reduced mobility, the Festetics Bathhouse provides accessible changing rooms and a sitting pool equipped with a patient lift at the Vitál Bar terrace, ensuring comfortable bathing opportunities. A capacity limit will be in effect, therefore guests are advised to check availability in advance at the Lake Bath information desk.
