They may be old or new, small or large, but churches are always nice to admire in any city. We don’t even have to be a believer to admire their beauty.

tartalom: + 1 The Cross and the Star There is a small eye-catching building in Helikon Street in Hévíz. At its peaks, the symbols -a cross and a star - indicate that we are in a sacred place. There is also a column next to it erected to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with the inscription in Hungarian 'Az ige kőszálként megáll', which is a quote from Psalm 46 meaning 'That word above all earthly powers'.     Although only a few Protestant residents were registered in Hévíz, a collection was in procession for the construction of a Protestant church by the guests staying here in the 1930s. Bálint Szeghalmy also made a plan in 1941. The money donation was collected for its implementation, but the raging war stopped his dream to become real. Finally in 1993, Hévíz donated a plot of land to build a joint Lutheran-Reformed church. The Lutheran and Reformed congregations decided to implement the old plan of Bálint Szeghalmy in a slightly modernized version, prepared by architect Mihály Zoób.     The cross placed on the gable of the church was carved out of white marble at the contractor's own expense. The bell is a donation from the family of Károly Borsos. The foundation stone was placed down on June 16, 1997, and the first service was held on December 6, 1998. In 2003, the church was enriched with the winged altarpiece of the Kossuth and Munkácsy Prize-winning tapestry artist Rózsa Polgár, and in 2004 with the organ designed and built by the organ builder Albert Miklós from Győr.   The Heart of Jesus Church, also known as Fradi Church In 1905, in the neighbourhood of the Roman ruins in the Egregy district of Hévíz, a two-storey bell tower was erected in place of the wooden belfry that had stood there for more than 100 years. In 1937, from local donations, the bell tower was expanded with another level and a tin roof. It was built in a Neo-Romanesque style with twin windows. Two bells were placed in the tower, a smaller one in honor of Mary Magdalene, which was cast in 1905, and a larger one in memory of the 16 heroic soldiers of Egregy who fell in World War I. The latter was made in 1937. In memory of the heroes, 16 linden trees were planted next to the tower, with a head tree at their base.     The bell tower was then renovated in 1990 with the voluntary donation of the people of Egregy, and on April 22, 1995 it was consecrated as the Church of the Heart of Jesus. And why is it called Fradi Church by the locals? Because the church, which was built largely from donations, received unexpected help, as the Ferencváros Gymnastics Club (a famous Hungarian football team from Budapest, nicknamed as Fradi) was also among the donors as well. Not only did the supporters make a financial contribution, but the team and club leadership were present at the consecration of the church. They even donated Fradi Relics to the church (most recently in 2017), which visitors of the church could see in a display case. In light of this, it is not surprising that the church, originally designed in blue and white, was eventually painted green and white which are the official colours of the football team.     Next to the church, a military memorial park was established in 2000 to commemorate the soldiers, civilians and Jewish victims of Egregy and Hévízszentandrás who fell in the First and Second World Wars. In doing so, 70 named headstones were erected. However, only 6 remained of the former 16 linden trees planted.     The Catholic Church on the shores of Lake Hévíz The western shore of Lake Hévíz (today's Schulhof Promenade and the area of the hospital buildings) used to belong partly to the village of Szentandrás and partly to the bishopric of Veszprém. These areas became the property of the Festetics family in 1857 and 1868 through land swaps. Soon after the expansion of the bath land near the lake and landscaping could begin. The row of the completed (except for one building) 7 bath buildings was completed by a chapel. Its construction began in the 1870s and was consecrated in 1877.     We only have a few old engravings and postcards from the chapel, and we also found only a few photos of the inside. The chapel was finally demolished in 1964, when the most modern balneotherapy center in the country was built in its place in the most modern architectural style of the time. It is essentially the hospital’s indoor thermal bath, the Winter Bath, today’s Indoor Bath and Therapy Center, which was handed over in 1968.     The altar of the old Church is going to be exhibited soon on the renovated Shulhof Promenade.   The Holy Spirit Church The most modern and well-known church can be seen from the beginning of the main street leading to the city, as its blue peaks rise high. The church opposite the town hall, which can accommodate up to 1,000 people, was built according to the plans of János Bocskai and was consecrated on September 9, 1999 by retired Archbishop József Szendi.     Breaking into the seven (5 middle and 2 side) towers, the tower guides its visitors to the city from afar. The seven towers symbolize the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, while the pigeon motif symbolizing the Holy Spirit appears in several places on the building (even the shape of the church looks like a dove opening its wings if we look at the church from the air). On the one hand, in the floor plan of the church, in the design of the floor in front of the entrance, in the motifs of the interior wood and in the painting of the glass window above the main altar.     The interior of the church combines modern architecture and tradition, which is mainly emphasized by the beautiful wood paneling. Due to its good acoustics, it often hosts organ and acoustic concerts. The colorful windows, reminiscent of Gothic style, praise the work of Simon Endre, an artist from Hévíz. The torso on the wall of the sanctuary is a 200-year-old art treasure that was donated to the church. The bronze statue of Christ on the left side of the altar and the statue of Our Lady of Hungary wearing the crown on the right side are also the work of László Marton. The walls are decorated with fire enamel pictures. No bells were placed in the tallest tower for static reasons, but 2-2 bells were placed in the towers to the left and right. Two bells were brought here from 2 old churches in Hévíz, while the other two were donated by families in Hévíz. By the way, the church is mostly mentioned only by the locals and guests as "Blue Church".   The Synagogue, only a memory If we walk towards the Protective Forest of the Lake, next to the entrance to the Deák Square of the Lake Bath, a monument appears at the foot of the trees in the park. The synagogue of Hévíz used to stand here. The lines of the monument evoke the facade of the building of the former house of prayer, with names on it that were once taken from here to death. Among others, dr. Chief physician Vilmos Schulhof.     There were not many Jews living in Hévíz, it is estimated that there could be no more than 2-3% of the population, yet this community was strong enough to build a synagogue in 1933. It is a strange game of fate that the building survived both the Holocaust and the war fortunately, but by 1959 the religious life in Hévíz had ceased. As a result, the house of prayer was not used, its condition greatly deteriorated, so it was demolished in 1977. The monument, erected in 2000, in its simplicity commemorates the former synagogue on the one hand and the former local Jewry on the other, and the pebbles placed on it indicate that faith has survived.   Árpádian church in Egregy, the Church of St. Magdalene The exact time of construction of the church is unknown, it was probably built around mid-13th century. It is first mentioned in written records in 1341. The building was badly damaged in the 16-17th century, and was later renovated in the Baroque era in 1731. Fortunately, only the most necessary parts were repaired, so the medieval form of the church has been preserved. During this renovation, the interior and exterior decorative paintings, the elevation of the ship, and the vaults were also replaced. The first patron saint of the church was St. Catherine of Alexandria. After the rebuilding, it was rededicated and its new patron saint became St. Magdalene. Since then, the church has been restored several more times: in 1860, 1912, 1964-65, 1990 and 1991, and most recently in 2015.     On the south side of the church, we can find an open baroque door. The vault of the tower was renovated in the 18th century and is joined by a rectangular nave with a sanctuary. Inside the church, the only decorative element,  is the row of booths on the north wall. The wall painting of the church is not of medieval origin, but it shows respect for the folk elements. Inside the building, there is a fragment of a Romanesque baptismal font and a medieval consecrated cross.   Its tower has three floors and a rich design, with two and three twin windows opening on the levels. The tower is closed by a bucket helmet, which is stiffened by eight wooden beams. In terms of its foundations, it mainly preserved the forms of wooden architecture. Painted decorations and incised shapes have survived on the exterior surfaces. The church may have remained in this form because it lost its significance during the centuries. The former settlement was largely depopulated, the inhabitants moved a little further down the valley, so this church only served as a cemetery chapel. Therefore, it was not important to expand or transform it significantly.   An Orthodox church built in honor of the “Life-giving Source” icon of the Holy Mother of God The foundation stone of the Orthodox church was placed down on 27 December, 2019 in Hévíz. The church which is still under construction will be accessible from Ady Street.     Construction of the church began in the spring of 2020. As metropolitan Mark put it: their choice fell on Hévíz because here the healing of body and soul is possible at the same time, and because Hévíz boasts that Emperor Theodosius owed his life to the water of Hévíz and became one of the most influential in the Roman Empire according to an old legend. The church is based on the plans of the Ybl-awarded architect László Vánca. The 15x15 meter church is traditionally made of brick, with masterfully smoothed corners on its sending walls showing the asymmetrical relief niches, which are masterful combinations of modern and ancient motifs. The Orthodox tower helmet will be adorned with an eight-pointed gold-clad cross. Although the church is not yet finished within the walls under construction, services are already being held.   Explore our beautiful city and see the many faces of the churches in town!

lead: + 3 The results of the ESPA Innovation Awards 2016 has been announced. The small town possessing the world’s largest thermal lake and a 220-year-old bathing culture earned the prestigious award for continuous improvements and renewal.
tartalom: The trademark of Traditional Hévíz Therapy as well as the unique tendering system, developed for the accommodation providers of Hévíz to improve quality, received an international recognition. Recently, the European Spas Association has awarded Hévíz the Innovative Spa & Health Resort Destination award. The ceremony took place in Vichy, France at the end of May. The aim of the European Innovation Award is to recognise and introduce new ideas, instruments and processes of spa towns worldwide. Every year, a winning town per category can be awarded. During the decision, the jury takes into account the originality and effect of the innovation, the practicality of the innovation’s introduction, the measurability of benefits, as well as their applicability. Both of the innovations of Hévíz explained in the application met these criteria. Did you know about Hévíz that: with 1 million overnight stays it is the most popular country town in Hungary?   it is only 200 km away both from Budapest and Vienna and it is situated in the western corner of Lake Balaton?   you can bath in the open air among water lilies in the thermal lake both in the winter and summer? you can choose from 10,000 beds from private accommodation to 5-star spa hotels? in addition to the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the most modern wellness and beauty treatments are available? In the summer of 2015, town Hévíz created its own trademark based on the healing effects of Lake Hévíz in favour of the accreditation of the 220-year-old treatments. The base of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy is the medicinal water, which, due to its rich mineral content, is particularly effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.  During the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the original, complex cure of Hévíz is carried out in order that the patients, according to their individual condition, can receive the most effective cure. So far, 9 service providers of Hévíz, who have the technical background for providing the traditional healing methods, have earned the qualification certification for offering the traditional therapy. The other innovation, which is unique nationally and also worth for international attention, is the unique tender developed for private accommodation providers to improve the quality of private accommodation. The development projects of the competition winning accommodations have already been implemented almost entirely, so the guests will already be able to use the garden furniture, flat screen TVs, WI-FI networks and many other improvements in the apartments in this year’s summer.   The minimum amount to be tendered and spent on development was EUR 160, the maximum amount was 50 % of the tourist tax paid in the previous year by the accommodation provider, which may even exceed the amount of EUR 1,000.     More information please contact us: Tourism Non-profit Ltd. of Hévíz H-8380 Hévíz, Rákóczi u. 2. tartalom: + 1 Aroma-therapy cabin, music therapy cabin Already ancient civilizations were using plants with essential oil content: for healing, during religious ceremonies, for beauty care purposes, for seduction or embalming. In the middle of the 19th century it was acknowledged that the medicinal effect of essential oils cannot be supplemented by anything else.   During sauna treatment in an aroma-therapy cabin the air of the cabin with varying temperatures is aromatised by using essential oils. Essential oils may have various relaxing or refreshing effects.     In the aroma-therapy cabin essential oils are inhaled or penetrate the skin and have their beneficial effects: prevent the spreading of bacteria and fungus; clear the respiratory passages; stimulate the blood supply of the skin and muscular tissue, thus alleviate pain and inflammation; beneficial for the digestive and secretory organs and they have a relaxing effect. Major reason for using essential oils is that they have a positive effect on our soul and emotions. Essential oils release emotional and mental blockages instantly.   Application forms of essential oils: Aromatic cabin/sauna: means entire body inhalation. Dry inhalation: inhalation directly or by dripping the essential oils on a tissue. Inhalation: carefully selected essential oils are dropped in hot water and they are inhaled together with the steam. Aroma-therapy packs, bolstering: essential oils are applied on the skin, which are mixed in body lotion or soaked herbs are placed on the given body part. Aroma-therapy therapeutic massage: unites the positive effects of essential oils and massage. Aroma-therapy therapeutic bath: in the aroma-therapy bath essential oils shall always be mixed with some kind of dissolvent (cream, milk). Evaporation: use few drops of essential oil in water, increase the water temperature and as a result of heating, the essential oil will evaporate to the air. Internally: there are strict rules for using essential oils internally. Their application is only allowed in small and controlled quantities, meaning only a few drops a day and only by using a mediator substance (which can also be sugar, alcohol or tea).     Major components: Alcohols, aldehyde, phenic acids, esters, acids and terpene. These components join together in a unique way; all essential oils have a complicated setup.   Sauna treatment in the cabin can be boosted by playing pleasant music. This is called music-therapy cabin. Low relaxing music and the essential oils completely loosen up the body and the soul. Those who do not like the quietness of the sauna cabin are recommended to use the music-therapy cabin.   Essential oil and Effect Lemon: vitalises, beneficial for the digestive process and skin conditionsJasmine: refreshing, anti-micro bioticChamomile: relaxing, for insomnia, stress and anxietyLavender:  relaxing, antiseptic, for insomnia, burns and woundsMint: relaxing, antisepticOrange: refreshing and vitalisesSandal: for respiratory disorders, dry skin condition and eczemaVanilla: loosening and relaxing

This therapy is using the healing power of the sea. First La Bonnadiere French physician used consciously the power of the sea for healing purposes. Later on biologists discovered that sea water resembles to the human blood plasma and it is rich in iodine and zinc, which are essential for the body. Algae and micro-algae play an important role in the Thalasso therapy; practically they are the basis of the therapy. "Micro algaes are the most brilliant creators in the Earth, created by biology.” (Prof. Walter Trosch, Fraunhofer Research Institute) Algae/micro-algae contain the most vital substances. Its beneficial nutritional effects were acknowledged long time ago. Algae concentrate the valuable treasures of the sea, magnesium, iron, inc, selenium, iodine, vitamins and amino acids. Algae decrease the body’s cholesterol level, breed probiotic bacteria, have a detoxifying impact, protect from physical exertion, stimulate the immune system, and help to achieve mental balance, strengthen the hair, regenerate the nails and maintain the self-healing power of the body. They are able to multiple/concentre certain ions to ten-hundred thousand fold, namely one kilogram algae contains as much trace elements and mineral substances as ten-hundred thousand litres of sea water.

tartalom: + 1 In the middle of the 19th century it was acknowledged that the medicinal effect of essential oils cannot be supplemented by anything else. Essential oil and Effect Lemon: vitalises, beneficial for the digestive process and skin conditions Jasmine: refreshing, anti-micro biotic Chamomile: relaxing, for insomnia, stress and anxiety Lavender:  relaxing, antiseptic, for insomnia, burns and wounds Mint: relaxing, antiseptic Orange: refreshing and vitalises Sandal: for respiratory disorders, dry skin condition and eczema Vanilla: loosening and relaxing

lead: There are programs for each day of the week!
tartalom: + 1 It is almost customary that during the summer there is a good festival in almost every city in the weekends. Most of the time, it is almost impossible to choose from the better and better festivals to visit. Unfortunately, there are few outdoor programs, concerts in the weekdays. Here, in Hévíz it's on the contrary! In addition to the festivals organised for the weekend, our city is preparing with programs for each night of the week. On Monday evenings, the Operetta Theatre of Budapest entertains our guests in Fontana Cinema. For years, one of the most well-known Hungarian operetta singer Marika Oszvald performs on our stage who was also awarded with the prestigious Kossuth and Jászai Mari awards. Tickets are available for purchase in Fontana Cinema and in the Tourinform Office for 3900 HUF. On Tuesdays, the Summer Evenings of Music program awaits our guests who enjoy music. Every week, different artists of several genre entertain the lovers of music on the small stage of Festetics square. From world music to folk music, everyone can find something for themselves to enjoy. The concerts are free of charge. On Wednesdays, live music can be listened to in the vinehills of Egregy. The four-member band with dancers usually play Moldovan folk songs and teaches dance moves for the audience. If you don't want to dance, the songs are still worth listening to while you are having a wonderful dinner. Furthermore, on Wednesdays a Historical Premium Vine Tasting is organised in the Museum of Egregy. Every attendee can visit the museum, the buffet, and the vine tasting as well. If you want to attend the program, you must apply for it in advance either at the venue or in the Tourinform Office by Tuesday night. The program costs 7000 HUF. Also on Wednesdays, organ concerts can be listened to in the Heart of Jesus Church (also known as Green Church) in Egregy. From week to week, Miklós Teleki's organ play can be heard occasionaly with additional guest musicians. From August, the concerts will be held in the freshly renovated Holy Spirit Church (also known as Blue Church).  Tickets are available for purchase for 2400 HUF and 2100 HUF (for pensioners) at the venue and in the Tourinform Office. On Thursdays, we are also preparing with programs. In recent years, on the stage of the Market of Hévíz a folklore program was held which was so successful that it had to be moved to another venue. This year, the program is called „Táncba hív a nóta rózsám...” (quotation form a folk song)  and can be seen at the stage in Deák Square. The Nagyváthy Folkdance Group prepares with an hour long program including several songs from different Hungarian regions with 4-8 dance pairs. The attendance is free of charge. On the last Friday of every month, a historical walk in the city is organised for the ones who are interested in the legends, myths, and the hidden gems surrounding the city. The attendance is free of charge, however, registration in advance is necessary in Fontana Cinema. From Fridays to Sundays, usually festivals make the summer exciting. In July, the festival programs organised are called Flavours, Dances, Good Neighbours and Maria Magdalena's Saint's Day which is held in Egergy. In August, Nostalgia Weekend and Vine Festival awaits our guests. The attandence on the festivals are free of charge. If you are staying in Hévíz, there is one more place you must visit. The Market next to the Great Parking Lot is open on every Tuesday and Saturday mornings and on every Thursday afternoon. The Market offers not only fresh vegetables and fruits but handmade items and antiques for the visitors. Opening hours till 31. December: Tuesday and Saturday 7.00-13.00 and Thursday 13.00-19.00. In the Tourinform Office, bicycles are for rent and our guests can book appointments for segway tours as well. For the current programs in Hévíz, please click here: >>>

tartalom: + 1 What else could be the main message to everyone this year: LIVE ACTIVELY! STAY FIT! STAY HEALTHY! And the perfect location is Hévíz, where health, health preservation, recreation, and the healing and energies provided by nature have been a part of everyday life for hundreds of years. Most of the shops, restaurants and service providers have already been back to business, the majority of the accommodation establishments have already been open, and some accommodation facilities will welcome guests from the second half of June. Most of the hotels and guesthouses have cosy gardens, parks, outdoor and indoor pools, wellness, and beauty services to make your stay unforgettable. Today, there is nothing to prevent you from taking a perfect summer vacation in the usual quality in Hévíz.
SWIMMING AMONG WATER-LILIES IN THE WORLD'S LARGEST HOT WATER LAKE If you are in Hévíz, you must see Lake Hévíz. And, if it is Lake Hévíz, you can experience the following: bathing, crystal clear hot medicinal water, black mud, waterlilies, small fish, water birds. The rustle of bald cypresses, fresh air and the experience of bathing and relaxing in the park on any day of the year. Surrounded by prestigious, historic buildings, Lake Hévíz is a unique and enticing experience again and again for anyone who has, even once, found pleasure in swimming in 32°C water on a beautiful early-autumn day. In summer, all ages can be found on the beach from 0 to 110 years old. Although the lake is not a water park with giant slides that is why it is different. It is a small wonder of nature that cannot be imitated and compared to other baths. PARKS, WOODS, PROMENADES, GREEN! GREEN! GREEN! EVERYWHERE! Cycle, walk, hike, move freely! In the protective forests surrounding the lake, on the banks of the Hévíz stream or even on the gently sloping hiking trails of the Keszthely Hills, there are many opportunities to explore the area in the fresh air, listening to the songs of birds. Whether you are planning a light stroll or a more serious hike, you will be able to choose from different routes. The Tourinform Office in Hévíz helps the lovers of nature with free hiking and cycling maps, as well as renting bicycles and Nordic walking poles. Besides, thanks to Bakonyerdő (the company looking after the woods), well-maintained routes, rest areas, educational trails, and lookout towers await families in the Keszthely Hills. The latter ones, by the way, offer a fantastic view of Lake Balaton. MEDIEVAL CASTLE RUINS FROM SMALL ONES TO LARGER ONES OFFERING A FULL-DAY EXPERIENCE If you have already been told about hills, mountains, forests, and great views… starting from Hévíz, many ruins of castles can be discovered during a day trip. The nearest is the ruins of Rezi Castle, located only 10 km away, which is an easy walk from Hévíz. A little further away, on Tátika Hill, there are also the remains of a castle in the middle of the forest. If you set off in the direction of Lake Balaton, you will reach Szigliget in 30 minutes, where not only the ruins of a castle but a complex, interactive medieval knight's castle offer a great program for families. What is more, the castle has been renovated in recent months, so it will reopen on 20th June. You can also take a day trip to Sümeg or Nagyvázsony or you can even climb the ruins of Csobánc Castle. If you are looking for the nearest small castle ruin, you will find it on the Main Square (Fő tér) in Keszthely, in the Castle Garden next to the Church of Our Lady of Hungary. ACTIVE ADVENTURES FOR ADRENALINE ADDICTS If you look for active experiences outdoors, and besides that, come to Hévíz with children, you do not have to go far for a little adventure. Children and adults can test their courage on the ropes course in the Tavirózsa Adventure Park located on the confines of Hévíz. Right next to it, the enthusiasts of racing can compete on a go-kart track. The Dino and Adventure Park in Rezi offers moments of forgetfulness for families with small children and dinosaur fans, while older kids can spend a fun day in the Zobori Adventure Park in Zalaszabar. Those who are over 16 can get black-and-blue marks and memories for life in a paintball fight in Gyenesdiás, or learn to water-ski on the beach of Vonyarcvashegy. Those who aim high can do so by a hot-air balloon, a gyrocopter, a microlighter or can enjoy a pleasure flight, while the lovers of the depth can creep and crawl with a tour guide in the caves of the Keszthely Hills. BEFORE OR AFTER THE ADVENTURES YOU HAVE TO EAT SOMETHING DELICIOUS AND FILLING Whether you like international cuisine or traditional Hungarian dishes, high-level gastronomy or the basic flavours of street food, you can choose from more than 50 restaurants in Hévíz, all of which are open throughout the year. The offer is variegated by the Hévíz and Gyenesdiás Farmers' Markets, where three values - local, artisan, and healthy - are added into each delicious product with all heart and soul. And if you want to experience a breezy wine tasting, the row of taverns in Egregy is an unmissable place where the fine wines of County Zala are combined with the view of the Zala landscape. WHAT WE DO NOT WRITE ABOUT IN THIS ARTICLE Roman ruins, medieval churches, the stupa, water mill. Beaches, guided programs, guided sightseeing tours, boat trips, bird banding, Csillagvár (Star castle), museums in Keszthely, the mansion, model railway exhibition. Sports competitions, night tours, camps for children. Places to visit in the Balaton Uplands National Park, Uncle Matula's hut, the unique flora and fauna of Kis-Balaton (Little Balaton), basalt columns. There are so many experiences that await you in all seasons whether you come alone, with your partner or family. Programs not only in nice weather during the summer holiday!  “I like to come to Hévíz because I’ve felt, even the first time, that life in Hévíz is slower but not boring. The streets are not crowded but they are by no means extinct. People are happier, more relaxed, there is time for everything and there are a lot of opportunities, while everything is near at hand that I need in today’s business atmosphere. Quality services, lots of green, fresh air, silence. Here, I only pick up the phone when I want to.” B. Kristóf (Budapest, 2019) [galeria]

tartalom: + 1 The Hungarian spa town of Hévíz is famous for its sulphurous thermal lake and its unconventional therapies. The devil himself once worked the fields around here, but it was such hard going that in a fit of rage, old Harry flung down his plow so hard that it shot deep into the earth – or so the ancient Hungarian legend goes. Warm water henceforth flowed from a spring on that spot and has fed the thermal lake ever since. Resort entrance The reality on this early fall morning in Hévíz is less dramatic:14 degrees Celsius and a light drizzle. After a cool night,a white mist hangs over the deep-blue lake and the bathhouse on stilts at its center with its pretty wooden spires. It looks straight out of a Disney film, but smells like a sulfur mine.   Author Mathias Becker in the thermal lake I wait on the shore, shivering in my shorts. I’m supposed to take a dip in the lake, but not before an attendant has arrived– for safety’s sake. The fumes apparently make some people feel woozy in the water. I stick my big toe in to test it – lukewarm. When my potential life saver comes into sight soon after, I slide into the lake like a fish eager to return to its element. Sedately, I swim by water lilies and on into the fairy-tale landscape. Somewhere beneath me lies the lake’s geological source: Every second, 410 liters of mineral-rich water, heated naturally to a very pleasant temperature by the earth, flow from a crack inthe rock 38 meters down. That’s why the water temperature can be as high as 38° C in summer and only go down to 25° C in  winter. Regular bathing in the lake is said to ease rheumatic complaints and back pain; drinking the water in healing doses reputedly aids digestive disorders. The mists have now evaporated and the first bathers of the day are stepping into the lake. Nearly all have a brightly colored foam pool noodle around their hips. It looks silly but helps keep them afloat – a safety precaution. You’re not supposed to stay in the water for more than half an hour anyway, and it’s completely off limits for anyone with cardiovascular problems. I swim slowly back, then make myself comfortable on one of the sunbeds around the inner pool. The lake has made me drowsy. Tropical waterlilies With a surface area of over four hectares, this thermal lake is the largest in the world suitable for bathing. There is one in New Zealand of a similar size, but at a constant temperature of 55 to 60° C, it is better suited to steaming vegetables than bathing. The Hévíz lake resort, on the other hand, is like a warm bathtub even in frosty weather, making the small town on the western shore of Lake Balaton Hungary’s most popular place of pilgrimage for those with back and joint complaints, even despite its competition within Hungary. From the famous Turkish baths in Budapest to the cave baths of Miskolc (where you have to swim through tenebrous tunnels) and the thermal baths in Hajdúszoboszló (one of Europe’s largest), more than 1300 thermal springs make the country on the Pannonian Plaina veritable healing hotspot. Many a source was only discovered while drilling for oil, but the warm waters of Hévíz were already popular with the ancient Romans. Bathing culture ended soon after the fall of Rome and was only revived in the late 18th century. First came the nobles and the bourgeoisie; then, in the Communist era, it was the turn of the workers. Allegedly, it was the party big wigs who involuntarily stopped the fun: Duringone of their sauna parties, the wooden bathhouse caughtfire and burned down. Rebuilt in 1989, the bathhouse reopened when Communism ended. The old political system disappeared, but Hévíz remained and blossomed. The town recorded over a million overnight stays in 2017, around 40 percent from Hungary, the rest from across Europe. A wellness industry with massage and beauty salons has long become established in and around the resort. Hotels have installed spas, and some flood their pools with the thermal water. To get a sense of the unbroken enthusiasm for Hévíz, I booked in for some of the traditional Hévíz treatments. First, the mud bath. I climb down steps into a steel basin the size of a garden pool that’s anchored in the lake. Just a few steps, and already the heavy mud, making a gloopy, bubblysound at every step, is up to my thighs – and up to my bellybutton when I sit down. A woman beside me reaches for the grainy, strong-smelling mass and gleefully smears it onto her face and shoulders. I bravely follow her lead. That evening, I notice that my skin feels unusually soft and I sleep better that night than I have for a very long time. Awakening the next morning, I can’t wait to get moving and am ravenously hungry. After breakfast, I have a massage appointment in the wellness and therapy area. Stefania Bajer, atherapeutic and sports masseur sporting a severe undercut, greets me with a firm handshake. In just 20 minutes, she has kneaded my muscles so expertly that I still feel the beneficial effects of it days later. I ask her whether my back is in good shape. I’m 40, I jog now and again, but spend most of my time in front of the computer. I haven’t had any pain – so far. “You need to exercise more,” says Bayer, “much more!” Mud wrestler: author Mathias Becker is clearly enjoying his bath Later on, I get to see where a lack of exercise can lead at the bath house: to the underwater “stretching pool,” where patients with back problems are suspended in the water, their arms or neck fastened into a kind of harness so that they cannot move. At the same time, weights attached to their hips pull their vertebraeminimally apart, relieving the discs between them. Developed in 1953 by Károly Moll, a local physician, this therapyis still used successfully on patients with disc problems. As I have no trouble with my spinal discs, I am allowed into thewater with very little ballast for a kind of trial therapy, so to speak. My arms rest on a kind of underwater gymnastics bar and I am drawn down by two three-kilo steel weights attached toa belt. My feet make no contact. “Harascho?” In Russian, Bajerasks the young man next to me whether he’s all right – but he doesn’t look it. My neighbor is wearing the kind of neck brace people wear after a rear-impact collision, and there are two metal bars on top of it, keeping his head above water. “Harascho …,”he breathes softly. As we leave the pool 20 minutes later, Anton Marukhin tells me that he’s a 28-year-old advertising and music video producer living near Moscow, and that he suffers with back pain. “I sit a lot, maybe that’s why,” he says. The doctors in Russia couldn’t help him so his parents sent him to Hévíz. The town’s healing reputation clearly extends far beyond the borders of Hungary. The underwater stretching bath is said to ease back problems. One of the men aiming to help pain patients like Marukhinis Dr. Gábor Domokos, the rheumatology and physiotherapy consultant in charge of wellness and therapy at the resort. He wears white sneakers with his white coat and is 68 but looks much younger. That’s not from bathing in the lake, he says (he cycles a lot and hikes in the hills around Lake Balaton), adding that too much significance should not be read into the lake water alone because no precise physiological explanation has been found for how the minerals work. “But we do know that many people who come to us with chronic pain feel better after the treatment.” The secret probably lies in the package: exercise in the warm water, possibly also the water’s composition, and then the peace, the long woodland walks – recently coined as “forest bathing” – physiotherapy, and a good, healthy diet. And also the sleep, I think to myself. Besides intensive curative swimming physicians recommend longwoodland walks Dr. Gábor Domokosis head of wellness and therapy Finally, I test the mud pack: I lie down on my back and am covered from neck to toe in the warm mass and then wrapped in foil and towels like a napkin dumpling. The mud weighs heavyon my body. Not a minute later and I have dozed off once again. Several days later, once I’ve returned home, I open my case and a sulfurous cloud rises to meet me. A most stimulating odor. I pullon my running shoes and head out the door. I’ve had enough sulfur to last me awhile. Well kept: the lake amid lush greenery GETTING THERE In February, Lufthansa fliesup to six times daily from Frankfurt (FRA) and up to five times daily from Munich(MUC) to Budapest (BUD). tartalom: + 1 A team of experts from the international travel magazine Lonely Planet has only found two more extraordinary spas than the Lake Spa of Hévíz. First place was given to the famous Icelandic Blue Lagoon, a truly magical place, if not a naturally formed lake. The second place was awarded to the Thermal Bath Spa in England, a classic spa that can only be visited as a museum today, bathing is not here permitted. The Lonely Planet compilation includes a total of 20 thermal baths, and in addition to Hévíz, Budapest's Széchenyi Bath has also made it into the top 10.   WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THE 10 MOST EXTRAORDINARY BATHS?   1. Blue Lagoon, Iceland You have to see it to believe it! It is said that the bright turquoise-blue pool, 30 minutes from Reykjavik in the rugged lava fields, could easily be assumed to be a natural formation; however, it was created artificially. Its water is full of which is from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant. Source: Lonely Planet   2. Thermae Bath Spa, England So romantic! The Thermae Bath Spa in Bath, England took second place on the list. Here can be found the only hot spring in Great Britain, where the water  has been enjoyed by many throughout history from the Celts to the Saxons. According to the legend, the spring was discovered around 863 by a king named Bladud. From the outdoor pool we can admire the ornate buildings of Bath Abbey. If that's not enough, this city can also boast with the world's largest biologically active lake with natural medicinal water. The thermal complex can also be visited in the winter and its natural thermal water has a temperature of around 38°C in the summer.   4. Bains de Dorres, France A magnificent view! The water of this small thermal spring in the Pyrenees has a temperature of 37-40 °C. The thermal bath offers a magnificent view of the mountains, as it is located at an altitude of 1450 meters. According to some sources, the thermal spring has been already known in Roman times. Source: Christoph Boutet - France.fr   5. Therme Vals, Switzerland Alpine style. A minimalist and modern bathing complex 200 kms from Zurich, with hydrotherapy and an experience of night bathing. Source: 7132.com   6. Pala Kameni, Greece Nature's mud pack! The volcanic island in the Santorini caldera can of course only be reached by boat and is famous for its sulphurous mud, which is also suitable for therapy. Anyone looking for the most authentic spa experience should definitely avoid the tourist high season. Source: Palea Kameni by Sergio Canobbio- greece.com   7. Szechenyi Bath, Hungary Space for everyone! The Széchenyi Spa in Budapest took the seventh place with the motto “There is room for everyone”. The neo-baroque bath with its 18 different pools, 10 saunas and a steam bath is one of the most important sights of the capital. Source: Szállás.hu   8. Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme, Germany A rural sight to behold! In the Art Nouveau building, which is more than 100 years old, the atmosphere of the baths from the past are brought to life. In truth, its history goes way further as it was built on the site of an old Roman sauna. Forrás: Joerg Halisch   9. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic Calming from the inside out! Karlovy Vary or “Karlstadt”, one of the most famous spa towns in Europe, which was founded by the Roman Emperor Karl and is best known for its effective mineral waters, both externally and internally. Hammam al Ándalus, Spain Ancient Arab splendor! After the closure of the Moorish baths in Andalusia by the Christian rulers of Spain in the 16th century, the elaborately designed Hammam Al Ándalus became the first traditional Turkish bath in Europe. tartalom: + 1 Indian waterlilies, mosquitofishes, ides, little grebes, dice snakes, bald cypresses, cyanophytes… Just a few to see how many unique and diverse species live together in the lake, the stream and forest that surrounds them.   The most photographed The Indian waterlily which is indigenous in Bengal (Nymphaea rubra var. loniflora), was planted into Lake Hévíz in 1898 by Sándor Lovassy an agricultural engineer from Keszthely. The pink flowers are usually only 5-7 centimetres above the water. At the moment, the flowers start to bloom in the late evening, and they close their petals in the morning. On the other hand, the smaller white waterlilies (Nymphaea alba L.var. minor) are already indigenous in the thermal water of Hévíz. At the moment, they are not present in the lake, but you can spot them in the Hévíz stream.   The smallest In the water, many strains of bacteria can be also found. There are two species of bacteria which can only be found in Hévíz including the miscromonospora of Hévíz (Micromonospora heviziensis).   The most protected The little grebe is the most protected species at the Lake. In Hungary, they can only survive the winter here. By the stream, we can see many families but sometimes they build a nest at the Lake as well.  Once they nested at one of the stairs leading into the water, so the guests of the Lake could see them from up close. Unlike other grebe species, the little grebe not only eats fish but smaller organisms as well.   The biggest The road leading to Hévíz is called Festetics alley, which is a beautiful alley filled with enormous bald cypresses. The breathtaking cypresses are from North America, in Hévíz you can meet them in the protective forest around the lake. Unlike other cypresses, its leaves become red during the autumn, and the leaves completely fall off in the winter. They are wonderful to see both in the summer with their green crowns and during the autumn with golden and reddish leaves.   The prettiest The common kingfisher doesn’t have a regular nesting place, but they can be spotted in Hévíz quite frequently. Most of the times we can see them by the Hévíz stream.   The ones with the best smell We also have a beautiful pink flower to show you, which most of times live rooting into the mud. The flowering rush grows even 2 metres above the water surface. They bloom from June to August, and they usually spread by scattering their seeds on the water.   Tourists and residents There are some who only come back for the summer, while other come for the winter. During the spring many bird species return to Hévíz like the barn swallows, the common house martins and then the Eurasian coots. The great cormorant can be often spotted by the streams, the grey herons and egrets also like to visit us from time to time from the Kis-Balaton areas. Many ducks already feel at home by the water of the Lake.   If you have problems with mosquitoes… There is a small fish in the Lake of Hévíz which has a great appetite for mosquitoes! The so-called mosquito fishes are not indigenous in Hévíz, however, they definitely feel at home in our waters. Many other tropical fishes can be also found in the stream who enjoy the warmer water.   The most frightening The dice snake definitely looks frightening to some, but in reality it is a really peaceful animal who likes to live in the water. It is only a 75-100 centimetre long and as its name suggests its back is filled with little black shapes.     There are many things to explore regarding the unique flora and fauna of Hévíz. Come and experience it first hand!     More information: Tourinform Hévíz 8380 Hévíz, Rákóczi str. 2. heviz@tourinform.hu +36 83 540 131
