lead: On one of the hottest days of the summer season, representatives of the profession gathered for a ceremonial event at the Hévíz Lake Bath. Nine local institutions and hotels received the Hévíz Traditional Cure certification, guaranteeing guests the highest level of authentic therapeutic quality for the next two years.
tartalom: + 1 The Hévíz Traditional Cure certification system was established by the town of Hévíz in 2015. The initiative aims to officially accredit service providers that offer classic therapies based on the local medicinal thermal water. The rigorous professional criteria were developed by a committee of renowned physicians. Strict Criteria for Maximum Quality To obtain the trademark, institutions must undergo a comprehensive review every two years. A fundamental requirement for certification is full compliance with all seven of the following criteria: Certified medicinal-water bathing: The institution has its own thermal pool supplied with Hévíz medicinal water. Regulated pool temperature: The water temperature is between 25 and 38 °C, while bathing time is determined by a medical specialist as part of an individually tailored treatment plan. Access to the Lake Bath: Patients are provided with the opportunity to bathe in the Hévíz medicinal lake, including at an external location if necessary. Hévíz mud treatments: Hévíz medicinal mud packs or mud baths are available on site. Precisely controlled mud packs: The temperature of the mud may not exceed 42 °C, and the duration of the treatment is also determined by a medical specialist. Weight-bath therapy: The institution offers the traditional weight-bath treatment among its services. Controlled weight-bath parameters: The pool water is maintained at 34–36 °C; the duration of the treatment, the amount and distribution of the weights, and the suspension points are prescribed by a medical specialist. The purpose of the strict inspection process is to ensure that guests can be confident that whichever accredited facility they choose, they will receive the same outstanding and consistent level of quality. In this way, the fundamental requirements of Hévíz therapeutic medicine—with a history spanning more than 220 years and now recognised as a Hungarikum—are guaranteed at every certified service provider. Expert Audits and the Award Recipients The 2026 certification process was coordinated by Hévízi Turisztikai Nonprofit Kft., the organisation responsible for managing the trademark. On-site audits were carried out by an expert committee consisting of renowned chief rheumatologists: Dr Gábor Domokos (Hévíz St Andrew Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases and Spa), Dr Veronika Moll (Hotel Európa Fit), and Dr Géza Kurth (NaturMed Hotel Carbona). The following nine institutions successfully met the requirements of this year’s accreditation and are therefore entitled to use the trademark until 2028: Ensana Thermal Aqua Ensana Thermal Hévíz Észak-pesti Centrumkórház – Honvédkórház Hévízi Rehabilitációs Intézete Hévízi Szent András Reumakórház és Gyógyfürdő Hotel Európa Fit Hunguest Hotel Helios Kolping Hotel Spa & Family Resort NaturMed Hotel Carbona Health Spa Le Primore Hotel & Spa The certificates were presented by municipal representative Henriette Mörkné Győrvári and Ildikó Lancz, Managing Director of Hévízi Turisztikai Nonprofit Kft., in the conference hall of the Lake Bath. “One of Hévíz’s most important assets is its 220-year-old tradition of therapeutic medicine. It is of paramount importance that we preserve this heritage and pass it on to future generations, as the Hévíz Traditional Cure can represent not only healing but also prevention and the promise of a better, healthier life. It is an important product through which the town can showcase its uniqueness on international markets as well,” Ildikó Lancz emphasised in her welcome address, while also thanking the partners for their close cooperation and high-quality professional contribution. We are very proud that, just like Lake Hévíz itself, the Hévíz Traditional Cure has been recognised as a Hungarikum since 2015. tartalom: + 1 Our guests represented EETS – Europe Express Travel Service and came from a Chinese town located approximately 100 kilometres from Shanghai, where thermal water with curative effects has also been discovered. The international travel company has been organising European journeys for more than three decades, with a particular focus on guests and groups arriving from Asian markets. In addition to tailor-made itineraries, EETS specialises in business and incentive travel as well as premium group tours. Accordingly, the professional programme focused on the clinical and recreational use of thermal water and the distinctive therapeutic culture that has developed around it in Hévíz. The Chinese experts were particularly interested in learning how a unique natural resource can, over time, become a defining element of a destination’s medical and health tourism profile. Their aim is to return home and build consciously on their own local resources, following a path that, in our spa town, has evolved over more than two centuries into a deeply rooted tradition and, ultimately, an internationally recognised trademark. In 2015, Lake Hévíz and the traditional Hévíz therapy built around its healing waters were also granted the prestigious status of Hungarikum, securing their place in the Collection of Hungarikums as a unique national treasure of Hungary. The presentation introducing Hévíz and the knowledge exchange that followed generated great enthusiasm and were very positively received. Representatives of the delegation made it clear that they do not regard this visit as a one-off occasion and expressed their openness to further cooperation. The meeting may therefore mark the beginning of a new and mutually beneficial long-term professional relationship. Hévíz is thus not only a leading health tourism destination, but also a source of inspiration and a model for those seeking to harness the therapeutic potential of thermal water to the highest standards, while preserving these valuable natural and medical assets for future generations. tartalom: + 1 They would like to have the Traditional Hévíz Therapy recognised also by professional European organisations. The therapy gets excellent result in mitigating the spine and musculoskeletal complaints. Recently, Hévíz has been able to deservedly win laurels, the town has even two reasons to receive the congratulations with raised head. In recent days one of the most significant milestones in the life of the town is that the lake has been declared Hungarikum, therefore the cup of Hévíz cannot be knocked off the table of national prestige anymore. Along with the lake, the traditional medicine of Hévíz, which has never been this successful, has also become Hungarikum. The healing effect of the bath culture of Hévíz is legendary throughout Europe, the curative power of the thermal water attracts masses of people who would like to be cured next to the western edge of Lake Balaton. Here, visitors spend more than a million nights annually. The Managing Director of Tourism Non-profit Ltd. of Hévíz, Horváth Orsolya said that the timing of the Therapy's branding was a special pleasure for the town, as it was 220 years ago this year that the first bathhouse had been built on the lake. In the course of these two centuries the Traditional Hévíz Therapy has simply become a brand. The qualification certificates related to the Therapy were handed over by the Mayor of Hévíz, Papp Gábor and the Managing Director of the Tourism Ltd., Horváth Orsolya. In addition to bathing in medicinal water, the basic element of the Therapy are mud bath and weight bath. As additional treatment, the consumption of the medicinal water from a drinking-fountain is also a part of the healing process, as well as massages, movement therapies, and physio- and hydro therapies too. The duration of the therapy is two weeks in a standard case. Professionals, specialised in this area, has worked on the development of the standardised Therapy, the fruit of their work is the establishment of a unique healing system. In the qualification of the institutes providing the cure prominent doctors has acted, such as the Medical Director of Spa Hévíz and Saint Andrew's Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Dr. Mándó Zsuzsanna, the Sports Doctor and Rheumatologist of NaturMed Hotel Carbona**** superior, Dr. Major Zoltán and the Chief Physician of the Hotel Európa fit****superior, Dr. Moll Veronika, who happens to be the inventor of weight bath, Dr. Moll Károly's daughter. The professional knowledge of the creators of the medical brand guarantees that those who want to recover here in Hévíz will be able to receive a therapy system, which is worthy of traditions and constantly advancing with the times. - Horváth Orsolya said. She sees the professionalism of the Therapy in two factors: presence of skills and medical supervision. The Manager of the Tourism Ltd. also said that the Traditional Hévíz Therapy primarily can be called the trademark of Hévíz and the town intends to raise the brand to European-level. The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market is the institution that is responsible for trademark protection in the European Union. Hévíz has submitted the logo of the Therapy here, and in addition the town has a good chance to receive positive judgement, because there is currently no competing logo in the market. The final decision is expected by October. The practitioners of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy will be entitled to use the official logo of the therapy, every institution, which has the sufficient professional, therapeutic background and medical infrastructure (pool with medicinal water, weight bath, facilities for mud packing, etc.), will be able to do so. Currently, this can be said of the following hotels: Spa Hévíz and Saint Andrew's Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Danubius Health Spa Resort Aqua****, Danubius Health Spa Resort Hévíz****superior, Hotel Aquamarin***, Hotel Europa fit****superior, Hunguest Hotel Helios***, NaturMed Hotel Carbona****superior, and the Kolping Hotel Spa & Family Resort **** in Alsópáhok. tartalom: + 1 The largest natural and biologically active thermal lake in the world was declared a "Hungarikum" (meaning special things which are unique to Hungary) years ago and was also included in the list of special national values of Hungary. The flora and fauna of Lake Hévíz are unique due to the water temperature, its composition and its special environment. Due to mild water temperature that you can experience all year around, there is a Mediterranean microclimate around Lake Hévíz, which has produced some very rare animal and plant species. These wonders of nature must be consciously and sustainably protected, and it is precisely for this reason that a comprehensive protection project is being implemented, for which 662 million Hungarian Forints are being invested.   THE PARTS OF THE LARGE-SCALE PROJECT In the nature reserve of Lake Hévíz the reduction of invasive alien animal and plant species, and species protection was introduced, the improvement of the tree population in the protection forest in the nature reserve was executed, The biodiversity of the green areas in the Hévíz-Keszthely moor was increased, Improvements to the water level regulation and the water control system - this includes e.g. the locks – were made. The infrastructure that showcases the Hévíz Lake and the Hévíz Stream as a green corridor between the Keszthely Mountains and the Kis-Balaton was developed. SPECTACULAR PROJECT ELEMENTS DELIVERED ON JULY 14th: the 2.2 km long Water Lily educational trail at the thermal lake 15 m high treetop viewpoint A plank path from which the swampy habitat with the newly filled thermal lake can be admired on accessible routes The resting areas, benches and bridges were renewed   CURRENT PROJECTS: But the work is far from over. Many elements of the project are still in the works, and ideas for further improvements came up that would serve the comfort of guests and residents alike. For example, the design of resting and stretching points next to the running routes, family-friendly natural rest areas, additional planting, but also the creation of a wet biotope is a process that takes several years. In addition, walkers with dogs will not be left without developments in the near future, because development plans have also been drawn up that think about them. The opening ceremony was followed by a tour of the development area, part of which was the handover of the roofed canopy viewpoint, which is currently in trial operation.   [galeria] More information: Tourinform Office Hévíz 8380 Hévíz, Rákóczi str. 2. +36 83 540 131 heviz@tourinform.hu

7. LIVING TRADITION – THE HISTORY AND PRESENT-DAY SPIRIT OF PENTECOST

Last modification: 2026. May. 23. 06:51

Pentecost is one of the most significant celebrations in Christianity, yet it is often overshadowed by Christmas and Easter. Its importance, however, extends far beyond religion. Rich folk customs, communal traditions, cultural festivities, spring farewell rituals, and early summer opening celebrations have long formed an inseparable part of this holiday. Today, the long weekend is widely associated with relaxation, excursions, and family activities — especially in tourism-oriented destinations such as Hévíz and the Balaton region, where Pentecost also signals the approaching start of the summer season.

Today, the long weekend is widely associated with relaxation, excursions, and family activities — especially in tourism-oriented destinations such as Hévíz and the Balaton region, where Pentecost also signals the approaching start of the summer season.
tartalom: + 1 The Origins of Pentecost in Christian Tradition According to Christian belief, Pentecost marks the fiftieth day following Easter. More than a religious commemoration, it represents a defining moment in both human and ecclesiastical history. The Bible recounts that forty days after His crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. Before departing, however, He promised His disciples that they would not remain alone: the Holy Spirit would come to guide them. The disciples had gathered in Jerusalem when, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, a mighty rushing wind filled the place and tongues of fire appeared above them. At that moment, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, receiving courage, faith, and spiritual strength. The apostles, once fearful and hidden from the public eye, suddenly began proclaiming the teachings of Jesus openly. One of the most remarkable elements of the biblical narrative is that the apostles spoke in different languages, allowing visitors who had arrived in Jerusalem from many regions to understand the message in their own native tongue. In Christian interpretation, this symbolizes that the Gospel is intended for all nations and all people. For this reason, Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the Church. Following the sermon of Saint Peter, tradition holds that thousands joined the first Christian community, marking the beginning of Christianity’s worldwide expansion. Customs and Folk Traditions Over the centuries, Pentecost evolved into a celebration not only of faith but also of renewal, togetherness, and joy. In Hungary, numerous folk customs are connected to the holiday, many of which became deeply rooted in national tradition, particularly within rural communities. Among the most famous are the traditions of the Pentecost King and Pentecost Queen. The Election of the Pentecost King and the Queen’s Procession One of the best-known customs was the selection of the Pentecost King. Young men from the village competed in various contests of skill and endurance, including horseback riding, wrestling, and athletic games. The winner enjoyed special privileges for an entire year, such as complimentary drinks at the tavern or honorary invitations to local gatherings. The Hungarian expression “Pentecost kingdom” still survives today as a phrase describing short-lived success or temporary authority. Among young women, the tradition of the Pentecost Queen Procession fulfilled a similar symbolic role, closely linked to fertility, prosperity, and the rebirth of nature. During the ritual, groups of girls visited homes accompanied by a chosen “Pentecost Queen.” Typically portrayed by the youngest or most beautiful girl, she wore white garments, floral wreaths, and often a veil or decorative shawl. Singing as they moved through the village, the participants offered blessings and wishes for abundant harvests and prosperity. In certain regions, the queen was lifted high into the air or ceremonially carried around the settlement, emphasizing the ritual’s symbolic meaning. In return, householders rewarded the procession with eggs, pastries, money, or other gifts. Homes and gateways were frequently decorated with green branches, elderflower, or birch twigs — all symbols of renewal, protection, and good fortune. In Christian theology, the Holy Spirit represents the third person of the Holy Trinity alongside the Father and the Son: the living presence of God within the world. Believers associate the Holy Spirit with comfort, wisdom, spiritual guidance, and inner strength. Consequently, Pentecost is not merely a historical remembrance but also a celebration of spiritual renewal, strengthened faith, and human connection. Pentecost in the Modern World Today, Pentecost exists simultaneously as a sacred observance and a cultural occasion. Within the Catholic Church, it marks the conclusion of the Easter season, while confirmations are often held during this period. In Protestant communities, the holiday is frequently affiliated with confirmation ceremonies as well. An especially intriguing question is how a celebration with more than two thousand years of history can remain relevant within contemporary society. While many traditional Christian feasts have gradually lost part of their communal and spiritual significance, Pentecost still carries a message that resonates strongly today: the value of community, openness toward one another, and the desire for inner renewal. Modernization does not necessarily require altering the holiday’s original meaning. Rather, it involves finding ways to make its message meaningful and relatable for present-day audiences. Although its social and cultural role has evolved, the tradition itself continues to flourish in renewed forms. Pentecost festivals, concerts, gastronomy events, and heritage programs are becoming increasingly popular throughout Hungary. This is especially true in the Balaton and Hévíz region, where the Pentecost weekend is traditionally recognized as one of the first major highlights of the summer tourism season. Below is an overview of this year’s festive programs taking place in Hévíz and nearby settlements. description: Pentecost is one of the most significant celebrations in Christianity, yet it is often overshadowed by Christmas and Easter.
