tartalom: + 1 After 220 years of medical experience and research, the Traditional Hévíz Therapy became a trademark of Hévíz in 2015. The therapy consists of three basic and four complementary treatments using the healing properties of sulphurous magnesium carbonate water. Experts have recognized that a significant part of the hydro, movement, physio- and electrotherapies of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy is suitable for the treatment of certain problems of the Post-Covid syndrome. In addition, the mineral content of Lake Hévíz, the evaporating water and the climatic effect of the 60-hectare Protective Forest surrounding the lake are also very effective in achieving the healing effect. The Post-Covid Care programme will work on the model of the already proven Traditional Hévíz Therapy. Patients arriving in Hévíz with post-Covid-19 symptoms will receive professional and personalised treatments in the comfort of a hotel, under medical supervision. The programme and the quality of the treatments will be identical, regardless of which Hévíz location the patient chooses.   THE PROCESS OF POST COVID CARE EXAMINATIONS AND TREATMENTS IN HÉVÍZ The specialists in Hévíz try to alleviate or, if possible, eliminate the symptoms of Post-Covid syndrome, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness, concentration and psychological problems. The patient's condition is assessed before arrival using an online questionnaire, and a full medical examination is available before the treatment starts, either at the hotel or at a local private clinic. The specialists aim to put together an individualised treatment programme, as Post-Covid symptoms vary considerably from patient to patient. If the severity of the symptoms indicates it, they may even recommend a hospitalisation different from the programme. The Post Covid Care tests and treatments are designed and supervised by rheumatologists, internists, cardiologists, dieticians and mental health professionals with decades of experience. After the results of endurance, muscle strength of the main muscle groups, oxygen saturation, cardiological and laboratory tests, the recommended treatment programme for the patient is drawn up. Depending on the results, the intensity and frequency of the exercise will also be decided. The duration of the Post-Covid Care treatments varies depending on the severity of the symptoms but is at least one week. The treatments aim to achieve the best possible recovery and fuller rehabilitation as far as possible without the use of medication and with a targeted treatment plan (active movement therapy, passive treatment methods and other physiotherapy techniques). In Hévíz, the hotels offer a wide range of treatments, such as therapeutic massage, electrotherapy, physiotherapy, gymnastics, breathing exercises with chest mobilisation, diaphragm exercise, inhalation, spa treatments, static and dynamic balance, proprioception development, water gymnastics, salt cave, stretching, mental hygiene guidance, dietetic advice, aromatherapies, etc. The climatic environment surrounding Lake Hévíz is an excellent place for outdoor exercises, such as Nordic Walking, walking, yoga or cycling, all of which help recovery.   AIM AND LOCATIONS OF POST-COVID CARE TREATMENTS The Post-Covid Care programme is currently available at five locations in Hévíz: Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa, Hotel Europa Fit, NaturMed Hotel Carbona, Hotel Palace Hévíz and Hotel Spa Hévíz. Participants in the programme aim to use their expertise and as many tools as possible to help people recovering from Covid-19 disease to end the symptoms that persist and affect the quality of life. They believe that their expertise, Hévíz's unrivalled facilities and the comfort of a hotel can work together to help patients make a full recovery as quickly as possible. Detailed information about the Post Covid Care programme can be found on the website of the town of Hévíz: www.heviz.hu

The effectiveness of Traditional Hévíz Therapy, which has excellent results in alleviating musculoskeletal complaints, is proven by the 220-year-old history of thermal medicine, thousands of recovered guests and modern medical research. In addition to bathing in medicinal water, the basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy are mudpack and weight bath. As an additional treatment, drinking medicinal water from the drinking fountain is part of the package as well as various massages, movement therapies, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. Ideally, the duration of the cure is two weeks. Institutions that have the necessary professional and medical background, as well as the medical infrastructure for the therapy (e.g. thermal water pool, weight bath, facilities for carrying out mud packs), are eligible for the trademark. Every two years, a professional committee verifies whether the requirements are met. On 15th February 2019, three experienced rheumatologists, Dr Annamária Bergmann, Dr Gábor Domokos and Dr Sándor Csordás, personally visited the institutions providing the Therapy to check the infrastructure and staffing conditions of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy. tartalom: + 1 “Health is closely intertwined with movement, which is prerequisite for walking. Walking is one of our most natural movements; it affects the functioning of the whole body..." Hévíz Thermal Bath and St. Andrew's Hospital for Rheumatology and Rehabilitation has opened the movement analysis laboratory, which has been tested for months and has been used by its patients, to the general public. The Kinesio lab, as the local people like calling it, was financed with own resources amounted to HUF 190 million.  By means of the most advanced digital technology and computer-controlled equipment, trained physiotherapists help you to get an overall picture of the state of your bones, joints, and muscles, your body composition and gait. After analysing the results produced by the machine, patients will, of course, receive an important and clear medical report and, if necessary, a treatment plan, which can be supplemented by dietetic advice too.   Dr Attila Kvarda, the Director General of the Hospital for Rheumatology, stressed that the movement analysis laboratory is an important part of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, as it helps to get a precise picture of the patient's pre- and post-treatment state. With this complex examination, the effectiveness of treatments in movement therapy can be measured objectively both in the short and the long term. In the long run, with the help of the test results, the specialists can draw up a more specialized treatment package for the patients with certain types of symptoms, therefore they can develop the most effective treatment processes. In addition to the patient’s feedback, with the aid of the clearly measurable computer analysis, the effects of treatment processes can be checked from time to time. The tests of the Kinesio lab can be used by patients referred to the hospital, but the tests are also available to anyone for a fee, and, of course, anyone who has been tested receives a medical report. The movement analysis is not only recommended for patients who have already received treatment It is recommended for younger people on a preventive basisand for athletes in order that they could get a precise picture of the state of their joints and muscles, which are loaded more than the average, and also of the condition of their body either to prevent sports injuries or to follow up existing injuries. In these types of tests, the staff of the Kinesio lab in Hévíz actively collaborate with the athletes and sports doctor of the Hévíz Handball Team.

I did not even think about choosing another profession. My parents also worked as rheumatologists in Hévíz. My father, Dr Károly Moll created the flow map of Lake Hévíz and invented the weight bath. My mother, Dr Ilona Hoffmann was the first female rheumatologist of Hévíz bath, therefore this world was not unknown to me even as a child. I like my profession because it is really varied. As a rheumatologist, I have to take into account the results of many fields of expertise and background areas from orthopaedics to internal medicine. Behind a symptom can be a number of causes that need to be thoroughly mapped, so personalised treatments work extremely well. Most of our guests returning after a year say they were totally symptom-free in the period between the two treatment courses. It is also not uncommon that prosthesis surgeries already appointed can be avoided by using the Traditional Hévíz Therapy.”     TRADITIONAL HÉVÍZ THERAPY What problems can help Hévíz, and the Traditional Hévíz Therapy? Back, neck and spine pain Joint degeneration and calcification e.g. knee, hip, shoulder, wrist complaints Problems with muscles and ligaments After-treatment of rheumatologic, orthopaedic, musculoskeletal surgeries and accidents Prevention and treatment of ‘manager diseases’ Sports injuries The basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy: Bathing in certified medicinal water Medicinal mud wrap or a Hévíz mud bath Weight bath – based on the invention of acclaimed rheumatologist and Hévíz resident, Dr Károly Moll.

tartalom: + 1 Already the Antic Greeks were aware of the beneficial effects of the sea. They recognised that bathing in sea water had an extremely beneficial impact on rheumatic diseases and had a relaxing effect on nervous system related illnesses. Already small amounts of sea water contain high quantities of mineral salts, sodium chloride and trace elements (copper, zinc, selenium and cobalt), which stimulate and strengthen the immune system and have a beneficial effect on the skin and mucosa. Thalasso therapy elements: Thalasso algae pack Thalasso mud pack Thalasso bath Thalasso massage body-wrapping and micro-dermabrasion Thalasso is a Greek word, comes from the word “thalassa”, meaning sea. This therapy is using the healing power of the sea. First La Bonnadiere French physician used consciously the power of the sea for healing purposes. Later on biologists discovered that sea water resembles to the human blood plasma and it is rich in iodine and zinc, which are essential for the body. Algae and micro-algae play an important role in the Thalasso therapy; practically they are the basis of the therapy. "Micro algaes are the most brilliant creators in the Earth, created by biology.” (Prof. Walter Trosch, Fraunhofer Research Institute) Algae/micro-algae contain the most vital substances. Its beneficial nutritional effects were acknowledged long time ago. Algae concentrate the valuable treasures of the sea, magnesium, iron, inc, selenium, iodine, vitamins and amino acids. Algae decrease the body’s cholesterol level, breed probiotic bacteria, have a detoxifying impact, protect from physical exertion, stimulate the immune system, and help to achieve mental balance, strengthen the hair, regenerate the nails and maintain the self-healing power of the body. They are able to multiple/concentre certain ions to ten-hundred thousand fold, namely one kilogram algae contains as much trace elements and mineral substances as ten-hundred thousand litres of sea water.

tartalom: + 1 According to Professor Massayuki if the body is symmetric the blood and energy circulation of the body are accurate and the conjunctive tissues of the muscles are loose. If the symmetry and balance are thrown out of balance, locomotor diseases and internal organ problems may develop. Healing and health preventive power of Yumeiho lies in the balancing of the energies circulating in the meridians, furthermore in the loosening up of the muscles and in the restoring of the symmetry. Yumeiho mixes three Far-Eastern massage techniques: massage, acupressure and manual therapy. During the massage the muscles are loosened up, which improve the blood and lymph circulation and metabolism. Stimulation of the acupressure points releases the energy blockages. Joints are put back to their original position by using manual therapy. Yumeiho massage duration is about 45 to 60 minutes. The professional masseur massages the entire body. The treatment is carried out on a rubber mat, while patient is wearing his/her clothes. There are hundred basic techniques, which are complemented by two to three hundred manual therapy elements, depending on the illness. Yumeiho massage is used for the treatment of wide scope of illnesses. It is extremely beneficial for joint, rheumatic and muscle problems, spine diseases, locomotor diseases, trapped nerves, back-, shoulder-, waist-, leg- and certain headaches, furthermore to prevent and correct incorrect posture. Yumeiho massage was originally used to improve and boost the physical and mental performance of the Shaolin fighters. The method has been used in Hungary since 1990, when Professor Massayuki visited us and held his first training course.

tartalom: + 1 It is part of the alternative massages and constitutes important part of the traditional Chinese medicine. It is also called Tui-Ni therapy. As a matter of fact it is an energetic treatment, which uses massage and dislocating techniques. Those points are stimulated by this massage, which are located on the energy flow paths of the body. It is based on the meridian system mentioned at the description of the acupressure treatment and on the stimulation of the given acupressure points. Patients are allowed to wear clothing during treatments. The aim of Chinese massage is to remove the barriers obstructing vital power (Qi) flow and to harmonise the body’s energy management. The masseur achieves the required effect by putting pressure on the respective points of the meridian system. Chinese massage technique can be applied in two ways, but it also depends on the treated person and body part. If the aim is to strengthen and stimulate the body the application of Yang technique is recommended; if we wish to relax the body, Yin technique shall be used. Chinese massage therapy is ideal for muscular fatigueness, back- and muscle aches, joint and spine disorders, gynaecological problems, for the mitigation of chronic or virulent rheumatic disorders, furthermore it plays an important role in prevention. Interesting facts First written record related to Chinese massage was found in one of the medical books of the Yellow Emperor. In terms of its basic principles it’s a uniform method, but there are various versions of Chinese massage. Number 36 is an important element in the Chinese massage as it is used as a measurement unit.

tartalom: + 1 New investments are taking place at many locations of the Lake Balaton Touristic Region. The investments and developments are aiming locations which are in connection with the Festetics Family of Keszthely. Thanks to the project, a cultural route is being created which will not only introduce the region but will also focus on the heritage of the Festetics. Regarding Hévíz, the main focus of the project is to completely renew the promenade around the lake. Since the investments are taking place in a nature reserve, careful planning preceded the beginning of the work. The plan had reached its final form with the inclusion of conservationist experts and with competent authority approval. The plan was also examined in accordance with the environmental action program defined by the European Union. As a result, the protection of the flora and fauna will be extremely important during the execution of the plan. For instance, the first step of the building process will take place outside of the growing season so the works wouldn’t disturb the hatching and nursing season of the birds. To preserve the character and the natural value of the park, a certain part of the tree and scrog stock will be renewed as well. The majority of the plants to be cut (63 scrogs and trees) are not native. To their stead, 12,500 new plants will be planted, focusing on the following: The first points to consider during the choosing of the new plants were the natural value, décor and variety. It was highly important to choose new plants which would bloom over more seasons and that the different structures and foliage would be appealing to the scene. Since the park is visited all year long, a lot of evergreens were also chosen. During the 12-month development, new attractions and services will provide convenience for the guests. The new attractions, promenades, photo points, the music pavilion and the pergola will revive a historical atmosphere. The fountains, the lights, the irrigation system and the rainwater channels will be also renovated. Partial roadblocks are to be expected during the works, however, the renovation won’t disturb the services of the Lake or the Saint Andrews Rheumatological Hospital.   [galeria]

Testing the Devil’s Waters

tartalom: + 1 The Hungarian spa town of Hévíz is famous for its sulphurous thermal lake and its unconventional therapies. The devil himself once worked the fields around here, but it was such hard going that in a fit of rage, old Harry flung down his plow so hard that it shot deep into the earth – or so the ancient Hungarian legend goes. Warm water henceforth flowed from a spring on that spot and has fed the thermal lake ever since. Resort entrance The reality on this early fall morning in Hévíz is less dramatic:14 degrees Celsius and a light drizzle. After a cool night,a white mist hangs over the deep-blue lake and the bathhouse on stilts at its center with its pretty wooden spires. It looks straight out of a Disney film, but smells like a sulfur mine.   Author Mathias Becker in the thermal lake I wait on the shore, shivering in my shorts. I’m supposed to take a dip in the lake, but not before an attendant has arrived– for safety’s sake. The fumes apparently make some people feel woozy in the water. I stick my big toe in to test it – lukewarm. When my potential life saver comes into sight soon after, I slide into the lake like a fish eager to return to its element. Sedately, I swim by water lilies and on into the fairy-tale landscape. Somewhere beneath me lies the lake’s geological source: Every second, 410 liters of mineral-rich water, heated naturally to a very pleasant temperature by the earth, flow from a crack inthe rock 38 meters down. That’s why the water temperature can be as high as 38° C in summer and only go down to 25° C in  winter. Regular bathing in the lake is said to ease rheumatic complaints and back pain; drinking the water in healing doses reputedly aids digestive disorders. The mists have now evaporated and the first bathers of the day are stepping into the lake. Nearly all have a brightly colored foam pool noodle around their hips. It looks silly but helps keep them afloat – a safety precaution. You’re not supposed to stay in the water for more than half an hour anyway, and it’s completely off limits for anyone with cardiovascular problems. I swim slowly back, then make myself comfortable on one of the sunbeds around the inner pool. The lake has made me drowsy. Tropical waterlilies With a surface area of over four hectares, this thermal lake is the largest in the world suitable for bathing. There is one in New Zealand of a similar size, but at a constant temperature of 55 to 60° C, it is better suited to steaming vegetables than bathing. The Hévíz lake resort, on the other hand, is like a warm bathtub even in frosty weather, making the small town on the western shore of Lake Balaton Hungary’s most popular place of pilgrimage for those with back and joint complaints, even despite its competition within Hungary. From the famous Turkish baths in Budapest to the cave baths of Miskolc (where you have to swim through tenebrous tunnels) and the thermal baths in Hajdúszoboszló (one of Europe’s largest), more than 1300 thermal springs make the country on the Pannonian Plaina veritable healing hotspot. Many a source was only discovered while drilling for oil, but the warm waters of Hévíz were already popular with the ancient Romans. Bathing culture ended soon after the fall of Rome and was only revived in the late 18th century. First came the nobles and the bourgeoisie; then, in the Communist era, it was the turn of the workers. Allegedly, it was the party big wigs who involuntarily stopped the fun: Duringone of their sauna parties, the wooden bathhouse caughtfire and burned down. Rebuilt in 1989, the bathhouse reopened when Communism ended. The old political system disappeared, but Hévíz remained and blossomed. The town recorded over a million overnight stays in 2017, around 40 percent from Hungary, the rest from across Europe. A wellness industry with massage and beauty salons has long become established in and around the resort. Hotels have installed spas, and some flood their pools with the thermal water. To get a sense of the unbroken enthusiasm for Hévíz, I booked in for some of the traditional Hévíz treatments. First, the mud bath. I climb down steps into a steel basin the size of a garden pool that’s anchored in the lake. Just a few steps, and already the heavy mud, making a gloopy, bubblysound at every step, is up to my thighs – and up to my bellybutton when I sit down. A woman beside me reaches for the grainy, strong-smelling mass and gleefully smears it onto her face and shoulders. I bravely follow her lead. That evening, I notice that my skin feels unusually soft and I sleep better that night than I have for a very long time. Awakening the next morning, I can’t wait to get moving and am ravenously hungry. After breakfast, I have a massage appointment in the wellness and therapy area. Stefania Bajer, atherapeutic and sports masseur sporting a severe undercut, greets me with a firm handshake. In just 20 minutes, she has kneaded my muscles so expertly that I still feel the beneficial effects of it days later. I ask her whether my back is in good shape. I’m 40, I jog now and again, but spend most of my time in front of the computer. I haven’t had any pain – so far. “You need to exercise more,” says Bayer, “much more!” Mud wrestler: author Mathias Becker is clearly enjoying his bath Later on, I get to see where a lack of exercise can lead at the bath house: to the underwater “stretching pool,” where patients with back problems are suspended in the water, their arms or neck fastened into a kind of harness so that they cannot move. At the same time, weights attached to their hips pull their vertebraeminimally apart, relieving the discs between them. Developed in 1953 by Károly Moll, a local physician, this therapyis still used successfully on patients with disc problems. As I have no trouble with my spinal discs, I am allowed into thewater with very little ballast for a kind of trial therapy, so to speak. My arms rest on a kind of underwater gymnastics bar and I am drawn down by two three-kilo steel weights attached toa belt. My feet make no contact. “Harascho?” In Russian, Bajerasks the young man next to me whether he’s all right – but he doesn’t look it. My neighbor is wearing the kind of neck brace people wear after a rear-impact collision, and there are two metal bars on top of it, keeping his head above water. “Harascho …,”he breathes softly. As we leave the pool 20 minutes later, Anton Marukhin tells me that he’s a 28-year-old advertising and music video producer living near Moscow, and that he suffers with back pain. “I sit a lot, maybe that’s why,” he says. The doctors in Russia couldn’t help him so his parents sent him to Hévíz. The town’s healing reputation clearly extends far beyond the borders of Hungary. The underwater stretching bath is said to ease back problems. One of the men aiming to help pain patients like Marukhinis Dr. Gábor Domokos, the rheumatology and physiotherapy consultant in charge of wellness and therapy at the resort. He wears white sneakers with his white coat and is 68 but looks much younger. That’s not from bathing in the lake, he says (he cycles a lot and hikes in the hills around Lake Balaton), adding that too much significance should not be read into the lake water alone because no precise physiological explanation has been found for how the minerals work. “But we do know that many people who come to us with chronic pain feel better after the treatment.” The secret probably lies in the package: exercise in the warm water, possibly also the water’s composition, and then the peace, the long woodland walks – recently coined as “forest bathing” – physiotherapy, and a good, healthy diet. And also the sleep, I think to myself. Besides intensive curative swimming physicians recommend longwoodland walks Dr. Gábor Domokosis head of wellness and therapy Finally, I test the mud pack: I lie down on my back and am covered from neck to toe in the warm mass and then wrapped in foil and towels like a napkin dumpling. The mud weighs heavyon my body. Not a minute later and I have dozed off once again. Several days later, once I’ve returned home, I open my case and a sulfurous cloud rises to meet me. A most stimulating odor. I pullon my running shoes and head out the door. I’ve had enough sulfur to last me awhile. Well kept: the lake amid lush greenery GETTING THERE In February, Lufthansa fliesup to six times daily from Frankfurt (FRA) and up to five times daily from Munich(MUC) to Budapest (BUD). lead: For the 13th time this year, on May 4, MI6 awarded certificates to the service providers and institutions that achieved the best results in terms of energy savings in the past year.
tartalom: + 1 Hungarian Innovation and Efficiency (MI6) Nonprofit Kft was established in 2011. The goal of the organization, which is also supported by the UN, is to promote all the energy efficiency processes through which Hungarian service providers can save energy and thereby save additional resources. The essence of the Virtual Power Plant Program (VEP) they operate is that: Unused energy is the greenest energy! The less energy we use, the more we can reduce CO2 emissions, thereby making the operation of our facilities more sustainable, energetically efficient and cheaper. The economic value of unused energy is the same as that of produced energy. With unused energy, we not only manage resources more efficiently, but also save money. The aim of the organization is to have service providers connected to the program either from the entrepreneurial, residential, civil or public sector; over time, do NOT use as much energy on an annual basis, so save as much as PAKS can produce. All of these results can be achieved with investments aimed at energy efficiency, technical developments, conscious decisions, the use of smart systems, lifestyle changes, recycling... For the 13th time this year, on May 4, MI6 awarded certificates to the service providers and institutions that achieved the best results in terms of energy savings in the past year.   How did the Hévízgyógyfürdő Szent András Rheumatic Hospital earn the certificate? The certificate is awarded for 1 year, and environmental engineer György Németh, the technical manager of the Szent András Rheumatic Hospital, told us about how to earn it. MI6 announced the program for the 13th year, but the Hévíz hospital applied for certification for the first time this year. Service providers can apply in different institutional categories, we have measured ourselves among hospitals. In order to be certified as an energy-conscious hospital, it was necessary to present the already implemented and planned measures aimed at energy efficiency, as well as to show how much we were able to reduce the institution's CO2 emissions in 2022 as a result of the technical changes, investments, and developments that have already been implemented, as well as how much we could count on financial savings. We can be proud that we met expectations in every respect. In recent years, several technical solutions have been completed in the hospital, with which we can achieve more energy-efficient operation of the facility. These include, for example, heat pump development, the solar park, rethinking the operation of facilities with building energy control smart systems. Of course, further developments are also planned. These will allow us to manage energy in different ways in different parts of the institution. It is also important for us to strive for a change of attitude among hospital workers, to make them interested in sustainable energy management in the long term.   How new is energy-conscious thinking in Hévíz? In Hévíz, the issue of sustainability and environmental awareness has long been an important and prominent aspect. Of course, this is also due to the fact that Lake Hévíz and its surroundings are a nature conservation area, so many regulations must be complied with. From the point of view of tourism, protecting this natural treasure is of particular importance in the settlement. Among the institutions in Hévíz, at the Szent András Rheumatic Hospital in Hévíz, we have been dealing with sustainability issues, energy efficiency, and cost-effective facility operation for a long time. This is also proven by the fact that this is not the first recognition of our work in the last 10 years. The institution has previously received the Greenovation award and the Ozone Green award. Of course, processes and developments in this direction have intensified since the first Covid year in 2019. The economic and social changes of recent years have initiated several processes in more and more institutions and state support systems, all of which favor decisions aimed at more cost-effective operation. Why is this award important? The Certificate of the MI6 Energy-conscious Hospital confirms that we are on the right track, that what we do is important. These recognitions are also very important to us because we consider this work to be a form of social responsibility. It is important that others know about it, the people who live here, our colleagues, the guests who come here. Let them see that sustainability is a priority in Hévíz and in our hospital, Tófürdő too! It must be seen that even a small intervention, operational decision or investment can achieve huge results in such a large institution. In fact! I'm going further! In an institution of this size, it is possible to save at least as much energy as with a new technical solution in the form of an investment, just by conscious employee behavior and conscious energy use. I believe that small steps can go a long way. Personally, my task is to operate a long-term sustainable Hévízfürdő together with my colleagues and everyone who works here. On May 4, the Energy-Aware Hospital Certification was presented to the hospitals by Katalin Szili, the hereditary patron of the VEP, and Zoltán Jenei (OKFŐ).
