lead: Have you ever realised that Hévíz and its surroundings are full of interesting people? In the first part of our new series, we are introducing Ed Fouten from South Africa.
tartalom: + 1 Ed. Fouten first visited Hungary 17 years ago and while travelling around the country decided to come live in Hévíz and Cserszegtomaj. He loves and knows the area very much. It is interesting that a South African world-travelled citizen who speaks 7 languages   chose Hévíz as his place of residence and to retire here.   Where did you first hear about Hévíz? My first interest was by meeting a Catholic Hungarian priest at the church I was schooled at and being a good priest his positive interest stayed with me to visit Hungary one day which I did. I was very interested in Hungarian history and culture, so I bought a book with photos and a video. What did you like about buying real estate in Hévíz and its surroundings? The lake Balaton, héviz thetmal lake, beauty, country life, houses, restaurants, market, food, the world-class dentists and the people!   He would tell you a little bit about himself. What did you do in South Africa? I worked as a Finance Manager and Accountant and responsible for Audits. But everyone is interesting! For example, I also read a lot about Hungarian history, culture, architecture music, wines, different foods (paprika and lángos) the language and the lake!   How did you manage to learn Hungarian, which is considered to be one of the hardest languages in the world? I speak seven languages: English, Flemish, African, German, French and Spanish. I learned to speak German here, which was quite easy after learning English, not to mention the many German speaking people living here. I am learning Hungarian constantly. I understand and use a lot of words, however, I haven't managed to speak fluently and consistently yet. Maybe during the quarantine, I will have more time to focus on language learning.   What are you doing now in Hévíz, now that everything you can do here is closed?  I never get bored, I have a lot of friends in the area (Many Hungarian). I learned to cook Hungarian food and I like to host my friends. I go hiking in the area, December is a very nice month. In the summer, during the first wave of the epidemic, I had to travel home to visit my mother who was ill and needed care. My 90-year-old mother is now fine, but unfortunately due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic and worldwide lockdown and borders closed, I had to wait until September to return to Hévíz. I missed it a lot. It was a very sad time not to experience the summer here, but I remained hopeful! I have many friends, in Cserszegtomaj. I have many grape vine trees, from which I make wine with the help of a local friend. Also apricot trees. In the meantime, I'm writing a motivational book on how to live a happy positive life. Another book will be about my travels and architecture, churches, and buildings. Do you have children, do they also visit Hévíz? I am the baptpismal godfather to two children in Keszthely, one is 5 and the other is 7 years old. They are sporty, active and happy children when they see me. They love their bicycles and want my attention to play with them!   Have relatives of your South African friends ever visited you? Yes of course. I used to organize a program for them, to introduce the area, I was accompanied by a group of 10 people. Even now, my acquaintances are waiting at home to end the virus situation and travel to visit me.They want to experience what the place has to offer and the country as a tourist. The friends also come from many other parts of the world, amongst others Canada, the UK, France, Switzerland, Mauritius and many who show interest to come. They want to experience the good dental work done here.   Which season do you like best in Hévíz? All seasons are beautiful. Spring with the freshness, beautiful flowers, summer with so much happening, autumn with the beautiful colors of the trees changing and winter with festivities lights, decorations and markets. Also waiting for some snow and the lake freezing up!   Do you swim in Lake Hévíz? Yes, as much as possible. In summer, seeing the sunset while swimming in lake Balaton and the “Hot air balloon" flying over! The thermal lake is refreshing and peaceful.   What is your favorite place in the area? The whole area has much to offer. The whole country I want to visit which has so much to offer a tourist which I promote.

50. Scheduled for autumn

Last modification: 2023. October. 04. 15:45

Autumn is a really special season. The red and yellow leaves fall and crunch under our feet, we feel the cool breeze of the air, we breathe in the scent of the morning mists, the sun's rays dance pleasantly on our skin. However, autumn dazzles us not only with its colorful appearance, but also with its many possibilities, since it is not too late to program, go on a trip, go to the market, or go to a concert.

title: Scheduled for autumn
description: Autumn is a really special season. The red and yellow leaves fall and crunch under our feet, we feel the cool breeze of the air, we breathe in the scent of the morning mists, the sun's rays dance pleasantly on our skin. However, autumn dazzles us not only with its colorful appearance, but also with its many possibilities, since it is not too late to program, go on a trip, go to the market, or go to a concert.

tartalom: + 1 Kányavári Island The arched wooden bridge built from wooden beams in the 1980s has now become a symbol of Kis-Balaton. We can enjoy a wonderful view from the bridge. We can admire such special waterfowl as the great egret, gray heron, or the cormorant, which is less popular with fishermen. On the one-and-a-half kilometer long Búbosvöcsök nature trail, 15 signs present the fish, birds, and mammals of the Little Balaton. You can also fish on the island and you can spy the water and the Zalai hills from two lookouts. In cooler weather, a little indoor attraction is good The Kis-Balaton Visitor Center is an exhibition of the Balaton Upland National Park that has only been open for 2 years. It is an excellent choice for the whole family all year round. You can walk along an interactive nature trail on the building's green-roofed structure, which looks like wildlife crossings. From here you can clearly see the winter bird feeders and you can hear the "opening song" of the ever more active black tit. The building houses a gift shop and a restaurant, and children can enjoy fresh air on the playground in the courtyard, while parents refresh themselves with coffee. Part of the exhibition is the cinema, where during a half-hour film we can get to know the winter-summer, autumn-spring life of Kis-Balaton through soul-touching quotes selected from the novels of István Fekete Tüskevár and Téli berek, all in the understanding interpretation of Gábor Reviczky. In the interactive part of the exhibition, we can find out what invasive species are and why we don't like them. We will find out what the role of Little Balaton is in protecting the water quality of Lake Balaton, and we can even examine water samples ourselves. Those who want to see even more of this magical wildlife can take part in a guided canoe tour organized by the Balaton Upland National Park from early spring to late autumn. The winter canoeing season has also started on the Hévíz stream. Those who take part in this can row along the Hévíz stream and then the Gyöngyös stream, and get to know this unique wetland. The end point of the rowing tour is Diás Island, where the Matula hut, evoking the atmosphere of Tüskevár, stands. At the István Fekete Memorial next to the small wooden hut, you can also delve into the hidden wonders of Kis-Balaton during a very interesting exhibition. Our secret tip is the bird watch and fish ladder Several locations in Kis-Balaton, such as the aforementioned Diás island, can only be visited with a guide, but there are still quite a few romantic and protected areas that can be visited freely without a guide. Next to the Zala river, at the dam of Lake Hídvégi, you can find the Madárvártara, which was built by Zurich students from thousands of acacia logs without any nails or screws. Next to the parking lot, 100 meters away on the fish ladder, depending on the season, you can marvel at the cavalcade of fish. The fish ladder between the Zala River and Lake Hidvégi slows down the flow of water, so that fish can easily swim upstream.   Buffaloes and other types of animals In the Kápolnapuszta buffalo reserve, in addition to the black giants, the ground squirrels are the favorites of children and adults, who cutely graze on the grass grazed by the buffaloes. Anyone who did not know János Arany's poem Arany Lacinak would not even think that the poor groundhog was "cast". Even at the beginning of the 20th century, groundhogs were considered harmful and therefore water was poured into their passages. Other spectacular animals are the jumping goats and donkeys in the petting zoo. In the colonies dug into the loess wall, the gophers attract attention with their brightly colored feathers. But what about buffaloes? The Balaton Upland National Park started breeding water buffalo in the area purchased in 1992 for the purpose of gene conservation. The largest herd of buffaloes in the country can be found in the territory of the reserve, which lives in great peace with the gray cattle. During the winter, the animals spend most of their time in the barn near the entrance, where you can see the traditional animal husbandry in a cozy old photo next to the buffaloes. In case of good weather, the animals are in the pastures, which can be reached in the easiest way by a horse-drawn carriage ordered from the reception building. The giants are "buffalo-strong" and do not necessarily always approach people with friendly intentions, and driving through them in a horse-drawn carriage is a real "safari" feeling. A new feature of the reserve is the viewing platform, which was handed over on January 28, from which we can now also observe the animals from above. (GPS: 46.581816, 17.20314) Kis-Balaton House, cultural trip Next to Zalavár, next to the foundation walls of the former St. Adorján church and the Cyril and Methodius memorial column, you can enjoy photos of the wonders of Zala county in a very cool Millennium Memorial designed by Imre Makovecz. You can read the names of the county's settlements in the letters hanging from the top of the specially shaped dome. At the Kis-Balatonház exhibition, you can learn about the living world, and children can have fun on the playground. Next to the Kis-Balaton Ház, you can reach the Kányavári island on the asphalted bicycle path on the banks of the Zala river. At the Kis-Balaton Ház you can also rent a bicycle, if you don't start on the asphalted Zala coast, but in the other direction, you can even go as far as Zalaapáti on the embankment.   Are you interested in more hiking tips in the area? tartalom: + 1 Hévíz, the city of the world-famous thermal lake, is full of life and cultural events even in summer. Music is for everyone A series of music programs will start on May 30 and will last until September. Twice a week, free concerts are organized at Festetics Square and at the Music Pavilion on Dr. Schulhof Vilmos Promenade. tartalom: + 1 While Lake Balaton is the biggest freshwater lake in Central Europe, Lake Hévíz is the world’s biggest thermal lake that is also suitable for bathing. The source of Lake Balaton is a river called Zala, while Lake Hévíz has its source from a cave underneath the lake. The water of Lake Balaton flows through the Sió channel into the river Danube, however, the water of Lake Hévíz flows into the Gyöngyös stream, then to Small Balaton and ends up in Lake Balaton. The deepest point of Lake Balaton is about 11 metres in contrast to Lake Hévíz, where the source point is 38.5 metres deep. The surface of the water of Lake Balaton is 600 km2 whereas Lake Hévíz has only a 0.0475 km2 water surface. Due to the great water output of Lake Hévíz, the complete water of the lake is replaced in every 72 hours. Regarding Lake Balaton, this phenomenon takes almost two years. The temperature of Lake Balaton can be as high as 28°C on hot summer days; however, during cold winters the upper layers of the water can freeze. The ice can even grow 25 cm thick. On the other hand, the temperature of Lake Hévíz never goes below 23°C, not even in the winter. In the summer, the water of Lake Hévíz is about 35-36°C hot. We would be able to swim around Lake Hévíz in about half an hour if the buildings did not prevent us from doing so. Nonetheless, a week wouldn’t be enough to swim around Lake Balaton. Lake Balaton is full of both summertime and wintertime activities: you can rent a boat or a paddleboat, you can surf, sail and try out many extreme sports, while in the winter you can ice skate or slide if the ice is thick enough. In Lake Hévíz, you may only bath; however, you can do so every day of the year. The water of Lake Balaton is qualified as drinking water, whereas the water of Lake Hévíz is medicinal water also suitable for cures and many people drink it. In Lake Balaton, you can bath all day long, while, in Lake Hévíz, it is advisable to stay only thirty minutes at a time. We can even walk into Lake Balaton from the shores, while into Lake Hévíz we can descend into the water through stairs since the water is 2 metres deep around the shores as well. The typical flora of Lake Balaton is the reed which is mostly located around the shores. Lake Hévíz is famous for the beautiful water lilies that float around the whole Lake. Both lakes are rich in different species of fish. The mud of Lake Balaton is quite popular with kids who love playing with it on the beaches. On the other hand, the mud of Lake Hévíz is favoured by adults, who like to use the mud on their bodies due to its medical benefits. Lake Balaton as a touristic region is the second most popular region in Hungary after Budapest. At the same time, Hévíz, following Budapest, has the greatest number of guest nights in Hungary. Lake Balaton offers spectacular views whether you are watching it in the embrace of monadnocks, admiring it in a storm, or you are taking photos of the birds gathering along the crevasses or of the bellying sails. The crystal clear turquoise colour of Lake Hévíz, the blooming water lilies floating on it, the whirling mist above it, the reflection of the buildings at night, and to be aware that you are floating above 38.5 meters are a mystical feeling. Both Lake Balaton and Lake Hévíz are national treasures, which have evolved over millions of years as they are today. They are not for us, but we enjoy all the good that they can give us. We have to save and protect them so that the future generations would be able to enjoy the unparalleled natural beauty they provide.

The end point of the rowing tour is Diás Island, where the hut of Matula evokes the atmosphere of the groves. At the István Fekete Memorial next to the small wooden hut, you could also delve into the hidden wonders of Kis-Balaton during a very interesting exhibition.   Secret sights off the beaten path Most places in Kis-Balaton like the Diás Island can only be visited with a guide, but there are quite a few romantic and protected areas that can be explored freely without a guide. Next to the river Zala, you can find the 'Madárvárta' at the dam of Lake Hídvégi, which was built by students from Zurich. The building was made of thousands of acacia logs without any nails or screws. Next to the parking lot, about 100 meters away, you can find the 'fish ladder', where you can marvel at the cavalcade of fish in the spring. The fish ladder between the river Zala and Lake Hidvégi slows down the flow of water, so fish can easily swim in the opposite direction.     Buffaloes and other animal species In the buffalo reserve in Kápolnapuszta, you can not only see buffalos but you can also spot susliks lurking in the grass! Even in the early 20th century, the ground squirrel was considered harmful and therefore water was into their passages, so they would be forced to move away. Other spectacular animals are the goats and donkeys in the petting zoo. In the colonies carved into the loess wall, the bee-eaters stand out with their brightly colored feathers.     But what about buffaloes? The Balaton Uplands National Park started breeding water buffaloes in 1992 in an area purchased for gene conservation. The reserve is home to the largest herd of buffalo in the country, living in great peace with the gray cattles. During the winter, the animals spend most of their time in the barn near the entrance, where we can see the traditional stock-farming in a cozy old photo next to the buffaloes. In better weather, the animals are on pasture, which is most easily reached by horse-drawn carriage ordered in the centre building. The so called black giants are also “buffalo-strong” and don’t necessarily always approach people with friendly intentions. Driving through in the pastures with a horse-drawn carriage is like being on safari. A novelty in the area of the reserve is the lookout tower, which was handed over on January 28, 2022, where we can now observe the animals from up above.   The Kis-Balaton House: a cultural travel Next to the foundation walls of the former church of St. Adorjan and the Cyril and Methodius Memorial Column, you could enjoy the photos of the wonders of Zala County in a Millennium Monument designed by Imre Makovecz. In the letters hanging from the top of the special-shaped dome, you can read the names of the settlements of the county. At the exhibition of the Kis-Balaton House you can find out about the wildlife, and the children can have fun on the playground. Next to the Kis-Balaton House, you can reach the island of Kanyavár on an asphalted bike path on the bank of the river Zala. You can also rent a bike at the Kis-Balaton House. (Opening: March 12. Address: Zalavár, Vársziget utca 2.)   For more information on sights and programs: Tourinform Hévíz8380 Hévíz, Rákóczi str. 2.heviz@tourinform.hu+36 83 540 131

tartalom: + 1 The cold, foggy, rainy winter days seem to be easily survivable only when viewed from a warm room. It goes without saying that in Hévíz we recommend a pleasantly warm bath to everyone. Unwind with the power of steam! In Hévíz, if you want really warm water, you can bathe in the indoor and outdoor spa and thermal waters of the Hévíz Tófürdő or the wellness hotels. If you are willing to take on extra experiences, bathe outside in the Hévíz lake, even when it is snowing, in the warm water of the swimming pool, which is approximately 23-25°C. If you want to be sure, you can choose the indoor and outdoor thermal pools of spa and wellness hotels for the guaranteed 36°C water. Want to actively sweat? As soon as the colder autumn days arrive, the stones of the saunas in Hévíz are already heating up. It is no coincidence that the most popular autumn-winter spa experience is sauna. Pores expand in the steam of Finnish saunas. The hot air permeates every part of us and has a beneficial effect not only on our well-being, but also on the functioning of the immune system. Take a sauna anywhere, anytime to keep yourself fresh, and take a sauna with friends for the sake of the experience, because the professional sauna masters not only fill your body, but also your soul with new energy! Melt with the power of steam! Of course, you can not only warm up in traditional Finnish saunas. In the wellness hotels, steam cabins, infrared saunas, scented individual or couples' bathtubs, and light therapy equipment also help you forget the cold weather outside. If we are really lucky, we can crown the day with an outdoor hot tub. All that is good: in one! And this is the Hévíz medicinal mud massage to the core. The thick black mud, heated to around 40°C, is applied thickly on the skin and then massaged over the entire body surface. As the mud slowly cools, our skin warms up. After the massage, a very thorough warm bath is recommended, which can also be combined with swimming in 34-36°C medicinal water.
Walk, jog, hike! Forget that it's not sunny and 30°C! Put on warm shoes, layered clothes, a wind and waterproof jacket, and you can start an exciting tour! In the vicinity of Hévíz, whether you head in the direction of Rezi, Lake Balaton or Kis-Balaton, you will find numerous well-marked hiking trails. But, if you were only walking here in the city, we recommend the Tavirózsa Tanösvény, whose 2.2 km long route leads around Lake Hévíz, in the 'lower' and 'upper' Véderdő. Even if you don't go far from the city, you can recharge your energy by walking along the forest roads, move your muscles and enjoy the fresh and clean air, while you can catch a glimpse of the steaming thermal water from several points of the promenade - even from the canopy promenade. One thing is for sure, a hearty walk will definitely warm you up. Is it too cold for outdoor sports or is it raining? Jump over to Alsópáhok and test yourself in the Adrenalin Arena! Row on a steaming stream! Find a friendly tour guide and join the challenge! You will have a wonderful experience on the warm flowing water of Lake Hévíz, on the Hévíz stream. The approximately 3-hour program includes 10 km of paddling, for which you do not need to be a professional canoeist, and you can even take on the distance with children. Bring warm clothes and maybe a pillow under your bottom, and the organizers will provide you with professional equipment and hot drinks during the journey and at the end of the distance. But if you paddle, you won't get cold! Invite yourself over for a hot drink! You don't even have to get up from the armchair or move away from the bar to warm us up! Order yourself a warm punch, a hot coffee, tea, chocolate, or perhaps a spicy mulled wine and you can already feel like the emperor of life, as long as you let the steaming drink in your palm sip, so that the minutes just tick by carefree.

tartalom: + 1 The Birth of a House of Prayer – Hévíz’s Religious Diversity In the early 20th century, many Jewish guests came to Hévíz to enjoy the healing effects of the lake. As religious visitors needed a place to pray, a modest prayer house was built in 1905 next to the lake's outflow channel, near Ignác Lusztig’s guesthouse called “Jerusalem.” However, the small building quickly became too cramped as the spa resort grew in popularity. (Sharp-eyed readers may spot the prayer house's location on this 1925 map) By the late 1920s, the growing community and increasing number of spa visitors made it necessary to build a larger, more representative synagogue. One of the key initiators of the new building was Dr. Adolf Kertész, a lawyer from Budapest who was a devoted supporter of Hévíz’s development and religious life. He submitted a request to Prince Tasziló Festetics II, who generously provided land for the synagogue free of charge. Fundraising began in 1929, and in 1930 the Israelite Synagogue Association of Hévízfürdő was established. It operated fully independently but functioned as a branch of the Keszthely Jewish community. Construction was completed in 1933 at a cost of approximately 20,000 pengő. The town also contributed: the municipal council of Hévízszentandrás donated 1,000 pengő, recognizing the importance of boosting tourism. 1933 – A Ceremonial Inauguration in a Growing Town The Hévíz synagogue was officially inaugurated on July 2, 1933. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Lajos Glück, chief rabbi of Keszthely, who gave the opening address. Distinguished figures from the spa town and local community were also present, including Sándor Stern, the synagogue’s first trustee, and Mór Weisz, president of the local Jewish community. The event attracted great interest and was significant not only for locals but for visiting spa guests as well. Caught in the Storm of History Hévíz was not spared the tragedies of World War II. In 1944, the Jewish community was deported, and many never returned. Several members from Hévíz were taken to Auschwitz. According to records, Dr. Vilmos Schulhof, Hévíz’s spa physician, was also among the Holocaust victims. Dr. Schulhof played a vital role not only as a doctor but also as a community leader. Many of the synagogue’s former visitors and supporters perished in concentration camps, including Mór Weisz, Sándor Stern, and other local residents. After the war, the abandoned synagogue remained empty and slowly fell into ruin. By the late 1960s, it was in a dilapidated state and was eventually demolished in 1977. For decades, nothing stood on the site, as if a piece of history had vanished without a trace. Preserving the Memory Fortunately, the city of Hévíz did not forget its past. In 2000, a memorial was erected on the site of the former synagogue. Its design recalls the original building and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. The plans were developed with the help of city officials and local historians, and Chief Rabbi Tamás Raj delivered the speech at the unveiling ceremony. This quiet yet powerful memorial site continues to invite visitors to pay tribute to those who were once an integral part of Hévíz’s community. Brought Back to Life – Virtually Though the synagogue no longer stands, today it is possible to explore it through a virtual tour. Thanks to a digital reconstruction, anyone can step inside and imagine what the interior might have looked like in its full glory. (You can view the rotatable 3D model at this link) If you’re curious to see how the Hévíz synagogue looked in its heyday, click here and explore it through a virtual walk!
