The Balaton lake has been well known among countrymen since a long time. It is a good idea to plan your route more to the South and discover the West Balaton region. It is a perfect place for the family holidays, for the history lovers, the fans of water sports or the connoisseurs of the Hungarian cuisine.   Hungarian see The Balaton lake which is ca. 500 km far from the southern borders of Poland, is the biggest lake in Hungary and Central Europe. It is 77 km long and 4 to 15 km wide. The average depth is 2,5 m and the deepest point is 12 m deep a Tihany Well. In summer the temperature of the water oscillates between 22°C a 25°C. The Hungarians call the Balaton lake their sea and it is one of their favorite places for leisure.   Holidays at the West Balaton The West Balaton region is very reach in touristic attractions. The city of Hévíz The spa resort Hévíz, with its emblematic thermal lake with unique healing properties, is a perfect place for leisure. The beautiful nature and idyllic atmosphere favor clearing your mind, and one of the biggest attractions is a bath in the turquoise water. Not only is the lake located in beautiful surroundings, but also the waters are rich in minerals, e.g. calcium, magnesium and Sulphur, which help to heal different diseases. There are peat and peloid on the bottom, which have a positive influence on the skin. In the collection there are medical and medicinal relics and also a book dated 1818, which was written by earl Richard Brighton and given to György Festetics, who was a contemporary owner of the lake.   Through the stomach to traveler’s heart A visit to Hungary is an exceptional culinary travel. It is hard to resist the local specialties, as well as hospitality, especially in the vineyards of Egregy. There are many taverns in the area between two street and in the summer you can hear vigorous Gypsy music. In the restaurants there are wine tastings and the landlords offer to the guests a glass of wine and csemege, a fresh house bread with lard, red paprika and onion. One of the most important regional dishes is dödölle, a kind of noodles made of potatoes and flour, fried in lard with onion. tartalom: + 1 Beach with an umbrella?! Yes! Swimming in Hévíz is an experience even when it rains or the weather is cooler! The temperature of Lake Hévíz is about 35-36 °C in summer even with rain and wind. If the rain bothers you, you can also relax in the warm water in the building above the lake. Water lilies open up when it rains, and when the air temperature is cooler than the water temperature, one may even be surprised, since the warm water lake is usually steaming!     Summer is not just about the beaches! At the western end of Lake Balaton, there is a lot to do in rainy or cloudy weather as well. 5 program tips around Hévíz in rainy weather: The Farmers' Market of Hévíz can be visited three times a week, on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, where you can buy delicacies and handmade trinkets. The Bobo Fun Park is open when it rains as well! The largest adrenaline arena on Lake Balaton and in Hungary was opened just a year ago, and the indoor facility is open for everyone! For adults, the park is full of relaxation and excitement, as it offers a lot of sporting, active recreation in a huge square while for children the park offers curious adventures.     The exhibitions of Helikon Castle have so many exhibitions that one day is not enough to see everything. Why not visit the Festetics Castle on a rainy day? You even have the possibility to visit the several exhibitions with a two-day combined ticket, such as the Noble forms of life, the carriage museum, the railway model and hunting exhibition, or the palm house. In the Castle Museum, many exhibitions have been renewed in recent years, so it's worth taking a look. What's more, each day a themed program awaits the guests as well like guided tours in the castle park, guided tours in the castle from the cellars to the attic and so on.     The Imre Festetics Experience Center awaits everyone! The House of Nature and Animal Park is located at the border of Gyenesdiás, only 10 minutes from Hévíz. With interactive exhibition and many local animals the park is fun for the whole family!     Just around the corner Don't miss the following programs if you are looking for nice activities to do when it's cloudy! The Sümeg Castle Games offer an exciting program for everyone. Throughout the summer you can enjoy the thrill of the knight's tournament every Wednesday and Saturday and you can even take part in a medieval dinner afterwards. The program is perfect in any weather, because when it rains there is a huge knight's hall at the foot of the castle hill, just below the restaurant.      If you would like to do something that brings you closer to nature, taking on a boat trip in the Cave Lake of Tapolca is the perfect program for you! During the summer months, there are always many people at the Visitor Center of the Balaton Upland National Park in Tapolca, where you can get acquainted with the earth's caves in a 3D exhibition and then experience rowing in the crystal clear waters of the cave. In the permanent exhibition of the Balaton Museum you can get acquainted with the past and the present of Lake Balaton. Even though it's a little unplesant to bathe in Lake Balaton when it rains, if there is no wind you can still go on a hip cruise. In the summer months, 1-hour cruises set off from the port of Keszthely.   Hike and enjoy the thousand wonders of nature! Trips on foot and by bike in the area might be a good program to consider. In the Keszthely Mountains you can choose from easy  to extreme hiking trails. We offer special hiking routes on our premises and you can rent children's and adult bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters at the Tourinform Office of Hévíz. The Kányavári Island and Buffalo Reserve at Kis-Balaton are also charming despite of the rain. On the 2.5 km-long nature trail you can admire the water spiders or the great egret up close. You can take part in a Hungarian "safari" program in the buffalo reserve.     You can also get to know native Hungarian animal species in the Africa Museum in Balatonederics, or at the Salföld Ranch in the Balaton Upland National Park. You can also test your stamina in the adventure parks of the area, such as Tavirózsa Adventure Park in Hévíz or the much larger Zobori Adventure Park in Zalaszabar. But you can also walk through dinosaurs in the Dinosaur Park in Rezi.   And last but not least, roam the volcanic sites of the Keszthely Mountains and Lake Balaton! tartalom: + 1 The scenic beauty of Lake Hévíz and the western corner of Lake Balaton are inviting nature lovers to explore their own freedom: the six-kilometre-long Hévíz-Keszthely cycle path starts in the forest next to the thermal lake and leads directly to the 204-kilometer Balaton cycle route . Those who cycle along the northern shore of Lake Balaton must discover the medieval castle ruins and the many volcanic hills all around the Szigliget peninsula (approx. 30 km).   From Balatongyörök (15 kms from Hévíz) you can also travel by ship with your bike and cross the Lake over to Balatonmáriafürdő which is located on the southern shores of Lake Balaton. From there it is another 30 kilometers back to Hévíz. Fenékpuszta with its Roman ruins or the Kis-Balaton National Park with the visitor centers, the internationally known bird reserve and the buffalo reserve are also ideal stops along the long ride. If you take the southern route on the Balaton cycle route from Keszthely, you can also head directly to the Kis-Balaton (approx. 15 km). We would also like to reccomend another cycle tour which is about 30 kilometers long and leads northwest of Hévíz through the Zala Valley. Along the way, beautiful viewpoints, sights, small wine cellars and the so called csárdas invite you to stop and admire the hidden beauties of the region.   The breathtaking beauty of Transdanubia with its gentle curves between the Bakony forest and the Keszthely Mountains, the hills of Somogy and Zala are also known for the many hiking routes and natural attractions. 20 kms west of Hévíz, as part of the Balaton Uplands National Park can be found the five-kilometer-long stalactite cave, called Csodabogyós. About 30 kilometers northeast of Hévíz, a the small town can be found, called Tapolca which has one of the most breathtaking attractions of the region. In the Cave Lake of Tapolca you can take rowing boat trips under the city. Wine hikers must travel to Szigliget which is located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. Next  to Szigliget, Badacsony is also a great place for wine lovers. The Badacsony witness mountain has a volcanic origin which gives an extravagant taste to the wines served there. Welschriesling and Pinot Gris vines are the most notable wines of the region, which you should definitely try while stopping there. tartalom: + 1 What’s more, cycling is more than a sport! While cycling, you have the possibility to discover the world on two wheels while you are relaxing. Not to mention that cycling is also environmentally friendly and healthy as well! The bicycle road around Lake Balaton has been completed for 15 years. Cyclist have already cycled around the Lake more than once, but they are also ready for new challenges. Cycling became so popular in the past years that the bicycle roads are as crowded as the highways, especially in the summer season. The Hungarian Cyclist Association have been working relentlessly on the BB365 project and its results are already used by every biker. What is BB365 exactly? It is an abbreviation which stands for Balaton Bike 365, meaning that by Lake Balaton it is possible to enjoy bicycle services all year around. Thanks to the project, sign boards were placed out which signal 800 kilometres of bicycle roads in total, four times the length of the complete Lake Balaton bicycle round. 45 different thematic routes were also created, which are also noted by boards. For example, the routes including the Festetics Heritage are red coloured. Circle tours always have letter combinations. The three-digit numbers always mean local routes, while two-digit numbers mean national roads. One-digit roads usually connect to international roads. Be cautious though: the new signs don’t always signal separate bicycle roads since they can also point to appointed car roads or dirt roads too. The BB365 webpage and application are perfect for seeing these roads as well. The BB365 application was awarded ‘The Application of the Year’ award by the Hungarian Marketing Association last year. Cycling fans are able to plan their routes around Lake Balaton in 7 languages. Due to the project, three bicycle centres were also created in Keszthely, in Balatonfüred and in Balatonföldvár. In these centres, bicycles can be rented, or guided tour can be also booked. Fixing services will be also available in the future. For what the BB365 application is good for? Just like in Google, you will be able to make a cycling tour plan, however, in the BB365 app you will only see the routes that you can also cycle on. You will immediately see the quality of the road (bicycle road, car road, dirt road) and the altitudes as well. You are also able to filter your search based on recommended routes if you for example travel with your family or you would like to cycle with a mountain bike. You are also able to rate the routes and recommend it to others. With the pictograms, you can see the sights of the region like castles, viewpoints, museums or churches. Based on the short details given of the sights, you can easily plan where to stop during your trip. You can also search accommodations, restaurants, service points or spots to take free water.
