tartalom: + 1 The first international professional meeting of the project took place on 15 January 2025 in Hévíz, in NaturMed Hotel Carbona. The aim of the event was to strengthen the partnership and define a common framework for sustainable tourism development.   Sustainable tourism development based on the standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) was launched in Slovenia exactly a decade ago this year, and today 95% of all guest nights generated in the country are realized in destinations with international sustainability certification. In international recognition of the work accomplished, Jana Apih, Head of the Green Destinations Representation in Slovenia, was elected Executive Director of Green Destinations in November 2024. This is why it is outstanding that the preparatory programs implemented in the project are implemented jointly by the Slovenian and Hungarian Green Destinations representations. However, this is only one of the project elements of the complex destination development project, since the seven participating partners, Hévíz Tourism Non-profit Ltd., Pannon European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation, Murska Sobota Development Centre, Lendava Institute of Tourism and Development, Goodplace – Institute of Sustainable Tourism, Sárvár Tourist & TDM Non-profit Ltd. and Innotime Hungary Consulting and Service Ltd. have the primary objective of unified tourism in the Slovenian-Hungarian border region. Sustainability development, including the development of a local product program, the assessment of legal and professional obstacles to cross-border tourism product development and the mapping of their solutions, as well as the implementation of destination-level sustainability pilot projects will be carried out in the next nearly two years.   The project partners described in detail their role in the project and the tasks ahead. In the first panel, representatives of the destinations participating in the project, the staff of Hévíz Tourism Non-profit Ltd., Sárvár Tourist & TDM Nonprofit Kft., Murska Sobota Development Center and the Lendava Institute of Tourism and Development outlined their plans. The second panel gave the two Green Destinations representations and the Pannon European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation the opportunity to detail their objectives and plans, while the afternoon program presented how the project helps local entrepreneurs to obtain sustainability certifications and expand the tourism offer. The partners held the first partner meeting, during which they reviewed the reporting and communication requirements of the project, established the Steering Committee and set out the steps for the implementation of the project. tartalom: Thanks to the proximity of Hungary Polish people are willing to plan there not only their summer holidays, but also weekend trips. The Balaton lake has been well known among countrymen since a long time. It is a good idea to plan your route more to the South and discover the West Balaton region. It is a perfect place for the family holidays, for the history lovers, the fans of water sports or the connoisseurs of the Hungarian cuisine.   Hungarian see The Balaton lake which is ca. 500 km far from the southern borders of Poland, is the biggest lake in Hungary and Central Europe. It is 77 km long and 4 to 15 km wide. The average depth is 2,5 m and the deepest point is 12 m deep a Tihany Well. In summer the temperature of the water oscillates between 22°C a 25°C. The Hungarians call the Balaton lake their sea and it is one of their favorite places for leisure.   Holidays at the West Balaton The West Balaton region is very reach in touristic attractions. There are many beaches and the depth of the lake is not more than 1,5 m for over a few hundred meters. The holidaymakers can rent the water bikes or go on a boat trip, where there are special animation programs for children. Yachting is very popular in the region, there are also many windsurfers take advantage of the winds. Balaton is a paradise for anglers, too. They can fish in silence and serenity, meanwhile the canoeists can admire the beautiful landscapes.  In the vicinity there are many well prepared biking paths and interesting touristic routes. In the offer for those travelling on two wheels are routes of different length and difficulty. Kesthely, a university town with a beautiful palace of the Festetics family built in the middle of the 18th century, can be a good starting point. It is just 6 km far from a charming town of Hévíz, known for the biggest thermal lake in the world where you can swim all year long. Try to discover the secrets of the castles Szigligiet and Sümeg, and then take rest in the Buddhist stupa of peace. Do not forget to include in your itinerary the longest case in Hungary, Csodabogyós in Balatonederics. The city of Hévíz The spa resort Hévíz, with its emblematic thermal lake with unique healing properties, is a perfect place for leisure. The beautiful nature and idyllic atmosphere favor clearing your mind, and one of the biggest attractions is a bath in the turquoise water. Not only is the lake located in beautiful surroundings, but also the waters are rich in minerals, e.g. calcium, magnesium and Sulphur, which help to heal different diseases. There are peat and peloid on the bottom, which have a positive influence on the skin. It is worth mentioning that in May the bath of Hévíz was given a EuropeSpa Med certificate, which confirms the highest quality of service.   Those who visit Hévíz may take a walk in a charming town. Do not forget to visit the church from the 13th century, built during the Arpad dynasty and get acquainted with the ancient artefacts from the region collected in the Museum of Egregy, that was opened to public in 2015. There are also the remnants of the Roman villa, that is nearby. If you would like to get to know history of the town and the lake, you may be interested in the exhibition in the Museum of Hévíz. In the collection there are medical and medicinal relics and also a book dated 1818, which was written by earl Richard Brighton and given to György Festetics, who was a contemporary owner of the lake.   Through the stomach to traveler’s heart A visit to Hungary is an exceptional culinary travel. It is hard to resist the local specialties, as well as hospitality, especially in the vineyards of Egregy. There are many taverns in the area between two street and in the summer you can hear vigorous Gypsy music. In the restaurants there are wine tastings and the landlords offer to the guests a glass of wine and csemege, a fresh house bread with lard, red paprika and onion. One of the most important regional dishes is dödölle, a kind of noodles made of potatoes and flour, fried in lard with onion. As far as the wines are concerned the most recognized vines in the area are Olaszrizling (Italian Riesling), Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) and Rizlingszilváni (Müller Thurgau).

tartalom: + 1 Background: Every year since 2009, the "European Best Destination" competition has been held. In the course of the competition, the public can decide which city of the top 20 tourist paradises in Europe is worthy of the title of "best destination". The prize was established to promote European tourism and culture, in cooperation with more than 300 tourism partners and the EDEN network set up by the European Commission. This year's ‘European Best Destination 2020’ vote ended at noon on 5 th February 2020, with over 600,000 votes on Europe's top destinations. As Hévíz was competing with favoured cities such as Paris, Madrid or Vienna, even takingpart in this great competition was a great pleasure for Hévíz. The result: In this exclusive competition, Hévíz finished in the top fifteen, ahead of, among others Prague and Madrid. The 12th place that Hévíz achieved shows that Hévíz received the most votes among the spa towns in the nine-year history of the competition, so Hévíz is one of the greatest spa brands in Europe. During the competition, - in addition to domestic votes - many votes were received from German, English, Norwegian, Austrian, Russian and Asian travellers. This clearly proves that Hévíz is a prestigious tourist destination of these nations.     Its significance: Hévíz is not only famous for the world's largest natural thermal lake; but for years, more and more guests have been attracted by the high quality of hotel services, excellent gastronomy and leisure facilities, which are becoming increasingly popular with families and groups of friends. Hévíz boasts the title of European Capital of Well-Being in 2020, based on the results of the competition. Hévíz is listed all year round on Europe's most visited tourist website as a highly recommended destination: it has six million website visitors and ninety thousand Facebook followers. Tourist activity increased by an average of 15% in the settlements participating in the competition in previous years. We would like to say thank you to everyone who voted for Hévíz and by doing so strengthened Hévíz's position in this outstanding league. True to our promise, among those who participated in our game related to the voting, on 14th February, on Valentine's Day, we will draw a wellness holiday for a couple in Hévíz. The lucky winner will be notified via email.

lead: + 3 Lake Hévíz and Lake Balaton are quite popular destinations in Hungary. Daily, more than ten thousand people spend their holidays in this beautiful region. However, we might raise the question: what do we know and what should we know about the two most iconic lakes of Hungary?
tartalom: While Lake Balaton is the biggest freshwater lake in Central Europe, Lake Hévíz is the world’s biggest thermal lake that is also suitable for bathing. The source of Lake Balaton is a river called Zala, while Lake Hévíz has its source from a cave underneath the lake. The water of Lake Balaton flows through the Sió channel into the river Danube, however, the water of Lake Hévíz flows into the Gyöngyös stream, then to Small Balaton and ends up in Lake Balaton. The deepest point of Lake Balaton is about 11 metres in contrast to Lake Hévíz, where the source point is 38.5 metres deep. The surface of the water of Lake Balaton is 600 km2 whereas Lake Hévíz has only a 0.0475 km2 water surface. Due to the great water output of Lake Hévíz, the complete water of the lake is replaced in every 72 hours. Regarding Lake Balaton, this phenomenon takes almost two years. The temperature of Lake Balaton can be as high as 28°C on hot summer days; however, during cold winters the upper layers of the water can freeze. The ice can even grow 25 cm thick. On the other hand, the temperature of Lake Hévíz never goes below 23°C, not even in the winter. In the summer, the water of Lake Hévíz is about 35-36°C hot. We would be able to swim around Lake Hévíz in about half an hour if the buildings did not prevent us from doing so. Nonetheless, a week wouldn’t be enough to swim around Lake Balaton. Lake Balaton is full of both summertime and wintertime activities: you can rent a boat or a paddleboat, you can surf, sail and try out many extreme sports, while in the winter you can ice skate or slide if the ice is thick enough. In Lake Hévíz, you may only bath; however, you can do so every day of the year. The water of Lake Balaton is qualified as drinking water, whereas the water of Lake Hévíz is medicinal water also suitable for cures and many people drink it. In Lake Balaton, you can bath all day long, while, in Lake Hévíz, it is advisable to stay only thirty minutes at a time. We can even walk into Lake Balaton from the shores, while into Lake Hévíz we can descend into the water through stairs since the water is 2 metres deep around the shores as well. The typical flora of Lake Balaton is the reed which is mostly located around the shores. Lake Hévíz is famous for the beautiful water lilies that float around the whole Lake. Both lakes are rich in different species of fish. The mud of Lake Balaton is quite popular with kids who love playing with it on the beaches. On the other hand, the mud of Lake Hévíz is favoured by adults, who like to use the mud on their bodies due to its medical benefits. Lake Balaton as a touristic region is the second most popular region in Hungary after Budapest. At the same time, Hévíz, following Budapest, has the greatest number of guest nights in Hungary. Lake Balaton offers spectacular views whether you are watching it in the embrace of monadnocks, admiring it in a storm, or you are taking photos of the birds gathering along the crevasses or of the bellying sails. The crystal clear turquoise colour of Lake Hévíz, the blooming water lilies floating on it, the whirling mist above it, the reflection of the buildings at night, and to be aware that you are floating above 38.5 meters are a mystical feeling. Both Lake Balaton and Lake Hévíz are national treasures, which have evolved over millions of years as they are today. They are not for us, but we enjoy all the good that they can give us. We have to save and protect them so that the future generations would be able to enjoy the unparalleled natural beauty they provide.

tartalom: + 1 AirBaltic and the Hévíz-Balaton Airport Ltd. signed a three-year agreement, under which direct air link is created between Riga International Airport and Hévíz-Balaton Airport.  With its professional work, primarily through its network of foreign representation the Hungarian Tourism Plc. helps make the new flight successful. This new flight opens up new markets for the whole Balaton region. According to the plans the first plane lands on 4th May 2013 initally with 76 seats on board. The weekly flights from May to October establish a fast connection between the Northern European countries and the Western Hungarian spa towns and Lake Balaton.     The Riga International Airport is an important transport station (so called hub) for Northern European passengers. AirBaltic carries 3,300,000 passengers a year to more than 50 destinations. It can offer a new holiday and spa destination primarily for its Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish passengers with the connection to Hévíz-Balaton Airport.  According to the previous market research from the rigorous Scandinavian areas there is great interest in the thermal baths during spring and autumn and in Lake Balaton during the summer season. The flight offers a convenient connection also from Russia.   Papp Gábor – the mayor of Hévíz– said, that the Hévíz-Balaton Airport Ltd., which is 100 % local government owned, is prepared for the flights of AirBaltic. To ensure the stable operation of the airport it is essential to increase the number of flights. To do so, the first successfully concluded agreement resulted in the Riga – Hévíz/Balaton flight. Reaching new clientele gives an opportunity to extend the composition of international visitors in the region. A comprehensive marketing campaign is prepared for it. Hévíz and in a wider sense the Western Hungarian spa towns will be introduced as health tourism destinations in the Northern European market in close cooperation with the Hungarian Tourism Plc. In connection with the flight the airport wants to intensify further the cooperation in the region initiating several towns and businesses in order to strengthen the common marketing tasks.   More information: Hévíz-Balaton Airport Ltd. tartalom: + 1 The trademark of Traditional Hévíz Therapy as well as the unique tendering system, developed for the accommodation providers of Hévíz to improve quality, received an international recognition. Recently, the European Spas Association has awarded Hévíz the Innovative Spa & Health Resort Destination award. The ceremony took place in Vichy, France at the end of May. The aim of the European Innovation Award is to recognise and introduce new ideas, instruments and processes of spa towns worldwide. Every year, a winning town per category can be awarded. During the decision, the jury takes into account the originality and effect of the innovation, the practicality of the innovation’s introduction, the measurability of benefits, as well as their applicability. Both of the innovations of Hévíz explained in the application met these criteria. Did you know about Hévíz that: with 1 million overnight stays it is the most popular country town in Hungary?   it is only 200 km away both from Budapest and Vienna and it is situated in the western corner of Lake Balaton?   you can bath in the open air among water lilies in the thermal lake both in the winter and summer? you can choose from 10,000 beds from private accommodation to 5-star spa hotels? in addition to the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the most modern wellness and beauty treatments are available? In the summer of 2015, town Hévíz created its own trademark based on the healing effects of Lake Hévíz in favour of the accreditation of the 220-year-old treatments. The base of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy is the medicinal water, which, due to its rich mineral content, is particularly effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.  During the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the original, complex cure of Hévíz is carried out in order that the patients, according to their individual condition, can receive the most effective cure. So far, 9 service providers of Hévíz, who have the technical background for providing the traditional healing methods, have earned the qualification certification for offering the traditional therapy. The other innovation, which is unique nationally and also worth for international attention, is the unique tender developed for private accommodation providers to improve the quality of private accommodation. The development projects of the competition winning accommodations have already been implemented almost entirely, so the guests will already be able to use the garden furniture, flat screen TVs, WI-FI networks and many other improvements in the apartments in this year’s summer.   The minimum amount to be tendered and spent on development was EUR 160, the maximum amount was 50 % of the tourist tax paid in the previous year by the accommodation provider, which may even exceed the amount of EUR 1,000.     More information please contact us: Tourism Non-profit Ltd. of Hévíz H-8380 Hévíz, Rákóczi u. 2. tartalom: + 1 While I’m still catching my breath, my soul has already arrived. Janett and I run across the wooden bridge from the parking lot, trying to catch the last bit of an immensely beautiful sunset. The flaring red, and rather huge disk of the sun, is just dipping beyond the horizon to the West. A feeling of stillness floods through us, much like the little waves gently lapping against the lake shore in front of us. I take a look at Janett. My dear friend is just the same: After both of us have taken the last photographs, there is nothing left but to enjoy the peace of the moment. … Talking about Hévíz is like talking about the mighty stage of nature that surrounds it. A place where the water buffalo roams. Where the famous, nearby Balaton lake has closed for winter, pulling another lake centre stage: The steaming hot lake of Hévíz. Yes, steam rises as we approach the spa town of Hévíz. “So where exactly are you headed to in Hungary?”, my friend Gaby asks me ahead of my trip. “Oh, Hévíz”, she sighs, visibly pleased: “What a beautiful spot. Ursula and I have been there many times … You will like it for sure!” Travelling to Hévíz from Vienna, about a three hour trip southeast of the Austrian capital all the way into Western Hungary, already exudes a feeling of relaxation. There are no fast lanes or highways in this part of the country, so all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the landscape around you. “You are lucky”, our German driver Volker smiles: “I go to Hévíz at least once a year. So glad we all decided to go on the same dates!” Janett and I have found Volker through a rideshare platform called “BlaBlaCars”, popular in Germany as a perfect alternative to trains, buses or taking your own car. Nice. Hévíz, then. As we arrive by the lake, the setting sun paints the rising pearls of steam with the last bits of colours for the day. “But what the … is this!?”, I gasp, suddenly torn from my slumber in the backseat of Volker’s car. In front of me, dozens of people are swimming in a natural lake obviously pleasant to bath in, despite the outside temperature being close to zero degrees. Mother Nature herself provides the energy for heating the healing sulphur waters. Quite the story: Lake Hévíz, a pleasant 26°C warm, is filled with healing source waters that lie buried about 900 metres below the Earth’s surface  … … framed by flaring fall colours such as these trees, an image that has me travel right back to the beautiful “Indian Summer” in Canada ..! Hévíz is a spa town rich in tradition … … their healing mineral and sulphur waters used throughout various spa & health institutions, and wellness hotels such as the prestigious NaturMed Hotel Carbona here … … a hotel that also offers exciting treatments such as the “Cryo-Sauna”: Janett volunteers to being exposed to -170°C for a very short time, said to stimulate your circulation and give you a boost of energy! Janett … We are waiting for your verdict on your travel blog! That day, I decide to keep my clothes on and only pose for a funny photograph in front of Lake Hévíz! Hévíz, what a discovery. In my memory, I can still feel the healing waters giving my entire skin a healthy, nutritious hug … … every evening, Janett and I are off for an hour or two of spa-stillness at the Kolping family hotel in Hévíz, perfect for both the kids and families as well as the odd “tired-crashing travel blogger” looking to unwind. The entire accommodation area is made up of single bungalows with reed roofs, adding to a familiar feeling of comfort from across the border, in the Austrian Burgenland province. And everyone out here speaks German! For a multi linguist like myself, it is almost a shame I speak no Hungarian whatsoever in return, but hey: Hospitality, appreciation of nature, and the good food & drinks we find here with our new Hungarian friends also speak a language of their own. Check this out. Talking about similarities between Western Hungary and Eastern Austria, one cannot fail to notice the food: Paprika goulash time it is – an all-time favourite on both sides of the border … … where the surrounding park beckons for a stroll (or a sit) … … modern holiday bungalows await … … as well as a chance to dive into the area’s hot mineral water pools each night. Around Hévíz, you will find prairie buffalos next to imperial castles and bustling farmers’ markets. Quite the Hungarian heritage & charm! I love visiting (farmers’) markets. All around the world, they always teach you about an important aspect of the local cultural history. What do people eat? What do they sell? Which “language do they speak”? How is the atmosphere? What is being offered? Who strikes up a bargain? And how? Janett and I decide to take on a feast of rather delicious “Kürtöskálacs”; a kind of sugar-bread-roll that goes perfectly with two glasses of hot, mulled wine. Beautiful second breakfast at Hévíz market. Just a little later, our local insider Krisztina drives us over into neighbouring Keszthely, famous for its imperial palace as well as being right by the shore line of Lake Balaton. Both places are worth returning to in the spring or summer, as we imagine all the green spaces full of flowers, happy vacationists in T-Shirts and us in summer dresses ..! At the same time, it is rather nice walking around without the crowds now .. The following is a list of travel tips on where to go once you are here: Hévíz market: Definitely worth your while … … where we recommend you to try delicious Hungarian sweet bread, and hot wine if you wish. Just about a twenty minutes drive and you will find yourself in front of Lake Balaton, Western Hungary’s famous steppe lake … … the advantage being only few visitors during low season … … same here at Keszthely Palace … … which we are able to visit almost exclusively on our own. Do visit the palace library: A magical spot filled with old books some of which are many centuries old ..! And if you, like us that day, wish to freshen up a little … … consider heading to Télikert Restaurant: Great food, friendly staff & a generous, urban flair here at Lake Balaton. If pure nature is what you prefer … … nature, horses, and romance … … then go visit the local buffalo farm, where you can learn a thing or two about the noble prairie dwellers and appreciate the local landscape around you! Thank you so much, my dear Janett, for helping to organise our #BloggerWellness days in Hévíz ! Hévíz & around : We’ll be back one day for sure! tartalom: + 1 Not everybody knows this wonder of the nature. A lake in Hévíz is located just 200 km from Budapest. Is it worth driving by car or buying a cheap flight ticket to visit this place where time goes slowly, and the beauty of nature surprises at every step.   A miraculous lake The lake in Hévíz is the biggest biologically active thermal lake in the world in which you can swim. Its surface reaches 4,4 ha and the water temperature oscillates between 24°C in winter and 36°C in summer. These conditions are very favorable for all year long baths as well as for the cultivation of tropical water lilies. They make the reservoir look like the one from a fairy tale. The cleanness of the lake’s water is an asset. 410 liters of hot water stream from the underground source every second, so it is completely replenished every three days. However, the medicinal properties of the lake are its biggest advantage. They were recognized already by the Romans in the 2 century A.D. One of the legends says that Mother Mary wrung / created a spring in Hévíz by the appealing prayer of a Christian nurse for the health of the Roman emperor, Flavius Theodosius. There is a natural peat at the lake’s bed and the water is rich in mineral elements like calcium, magnesium, sulphur.   Idyllic scenery Hévíz is a charming health resort, inhabited by 5 000 citizens, located only 6 km from the Balaton lake. It is also one of the most beautifully flowered town in Hungary and in May 2016 it was given an Innovation Award in the category of the Innovative Spa and Health Resort Destination by the European Spas Association. Hévíz has been a well-known health resort for 220 years thanks to the biggest thermal lake in Europe. The number of Polish tourists visiting the city still grows and the standard of the lodging conditions are being constantly improved.   A unique leisure A visit in Hévíz does not need to be only for healing or preventive reasons. In spring and summer when the flowers blossom, the weather encourages for long walks. The lake is surrounded by the forest of exotic trees, where you can find evergreen bald cypresses. On the other hand the city is full of nice cafes and restaurants offering local specialties and exquisite wines. Except for the baths in the thermal lake and the traditional therapy, there is a wide offer of spa and wellness services based on the use of the lake’s water available at the high standard hotels. There are saunas, relaxation massages, beauty treatments, as well as healthy and delicious cuisine is served. For many visitors a stay in Hévíz is a motivation for starting a balanced and healthy way of living. An optimal treatment time is 15 days, however if it not possible it is worth relaxing for a shorter time, too.   Other attractions Hévíz and its surroundings are a perfect place for the fans of cycling tours. Local tourist trails lead to ruins of the beautiful castles, as well as to the shore of the Balaton Lake. There are also many offers of the active stay in the region, and the calendar is full of different cultural events in the city throughout all year.

tartalom: + 1 Hévíz used this hard time to renew its communication. For this, besides the experience they had they also asked for help from a creative agency. The main message of the new strategy is to highlight fitness with the help of nature. The guarantee for experience and active leisure time will be also important.   A Fresh Image Harmonised with Nature ‘We wanted to keep the well-known water lily which has been the symbol of Hévíz for years. Of course, we wanted to embody the contemporary trends as well. The water drops which are also the petals of the water lily were coloured to be green and blue which are symbolising the blue water of the lake and the greenery that surrounds it. We hope the new logo will also strengthen the new message: Hévíz can offer many programs besides the lake all year around’ said the art director of Armadillo marketing agency, Ildikó Szőke.     Continuing Building Hévíz as a Love Brand The new communication of the city includes the already familiar health tourism direction but it also highlights ‘slowing down’ and personalised program possibilities. These new elements can be really appealing to an audience who would like to escape from the tiring weekdays to experience various adventures. ’We wanted to show that Hévíz is more than a lake; Hévíz is the fountain of life and adventures!’ said the managing director of Hévíz Tourism Nonprofit Ltd., Tamás Pálffy. ‘It doesn’t mean we would like to get rid of the old traditions. We would rather continue building the love brand. We would really like if the younger generations and the active middle aged would regard Hévíz and its region as one of the most appealing destinations in Hungary. Of course, we won’t forget about our regulars either: we are going to satisfy the needs of the old and the new senior generations as well’.     The Value of Hévíz is for Forever, but its Face Changes with the World The power of the curing water in Hévíz and the unmatched atmosphere made the city quite popular for centuries. As the trends change continuously, those who have been to Hévíz already know that Hévíz is more than a lake! The slow tourism means that there is time for everything what is important. To live healthy, to laugh together, to walk, to eat good, to visit beautiful places, to do sports or just to regenerate in the water. This variety is worth showing to the world in a new way as well. The new image and the new communication strategy walk hand in hand, we hope to show that Hévíz is an amazing destination all year around. The new style is already represented on the website of the city but it will be also found in the marketing campaigns and the city programs.

tartalom: + 1 The IMTM 2023 – International Mediterranean Tourism Market was held two months ago in Expo Tel Aviv for the first time after COVID. The exhibition was a success. Endless booths and representations of both countries and private tourism providers alike. Walking between the cubicles and meeting hundreds of professionals, I suddenly noticed a small modest counter in a remote corner with the Hungarian flag. There I met Petr Ostrovkin, an impressive businessman with his intrepetor. I was curious about the product he was trying to market – a hotel in Hungary he owns on a small lake I never heard of. Petr invited me to visit and within a few weeks I found myself spending an incredible time by Europe’s largest thermal basin – lake Hévíz, chick to chick with Lake Balton.
There I investigated, discovered and experienced – why do Hungarians desire top thermal baths so much. Or, is it true that Hungary is indeed a “bathing world-power”.  The explanation is rather straightforward – history, tradition and geography are all mixed, like a traditional Jewish Cholent. The Romans that ruled in ancient Hungary left first their famous mark here. They had bathing and cleaning habits. Bathing was an important part of their lifestyle, which meant refreshing the body and soul. They built baths in this region, mainly for their military forces. Several private baths were also framed by wealthy Romans in their mansions. It is believed that the Roman healers built separate bathing complexes for those who were in poor health condition.   Hungarian bath culture started flourishing with medieval Turkish rule – an art wall creation in Rudas bath, Budapest (photo by Motti Verses) Going back in time – Rudas turkish style sink, Budapest (photo by Motti Verses) However it is believed that the Hungarian bath culture started flourishing with medieval Turkish rule. The Ottoman Empire, historically  the Turkish Empire, controlled much of southeast Europe, including Hungary. They are the ones that lay down the foundations of thermal baths. The Ottomans also introduced people to the habits of their wellness treatments. Massages, body creams and oils. The Turks valued bathing as both a cleansing ritual and social gathering. The Hungarians were doubtful. Only the Turks were allowed to use the baths during the day. Curious Hungarians only went to the thermal baths at night-time, especially in Budapest that was and still is a city of bathing power. The rest is history. Over the years these baths became part of a balanced life culture in Hungary. Bearing in mind that the country has no access to an ocean or a sea, relying on Lake Balaton for recreational needs, local baths flourished. The neighbors in Austria, once part of the joint dual Monarchy under the name Austro-Hungarian Empire, similarly love thermal baths . Lake Hévíz, Europe’s largest thermal basin (photo by Motti Verses) Endless steam – Lake Hévíz (photo by Motti Verses) A small creek with water coming from the lake- similar as the hotel thermal baths (photo by Motti Verses) No wonder the small Lake Hévíz, Europe’s largest thermal basin is an extremely popular destination – a two hours drive, either from Budapest or Vienna. It is 38.5 meters deep, with 410 liters per second water flow rate and biologically volcanically active – a natural thermal lake with magical health capabilities. Some call it the fountain of life. Since 1795 these healing waters helped people to recover and regain their strength. Most visitors return home refreshed and rejuvenated. Experts indicate that the chemical ingredients of cold and hot water springs, with 40 degrees of sulphuric medicinal water here, are richer than those in thermal baths in Budapest. Hévíz is where Petr Ostrovkin’s hotel is. He hopes Israelis will in time flock to his shimmering estate. His Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa offers 232 rooms and suites and is an ultimate destination for a relaxing and therapeutic vacation. The hotel is located in a gigantic natural park within walking distance to Lake Hévíz. This walk is rather surreal along a small creek with steam water coming from the lake. Our visit was just recently but the temperatures were low and a constant drizzle dominated our stay. Endless steam evaporates as the water temperature is very high. Guests may enjoy Lake Hévíz mineral water reaching the spa via pipes. Definitely the most rewarding experiences one can enjoy here. Lotus Therme is a pampering traditional hotel. A variety of different indoor pools in contrasting water temperatures are offered. The great jacuzzi was the strongest I have ever experienced. The main round pool is heated, but does not contain healing water. Pouring rain while your body is soaked deep in hot water is just paradise. We loved our morning swim in this well maintained pool. A unique experience in any weather conditions. The wellness spa offers a variety of treatments with Lake Hévíz products, however we did not experience them. The pampering pools were just fantastic. The daily scenery from the room balcony – total relaxation (photo by Motti Verses) A great experience while swimming – constant drizzle with steam evaporation, as the water temperature is very high (photo by Motti Verses) The relaxing lobby of Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa (photo by Motti Verses) Lotus is the key element here as this water flower really blossoms on this never surprising natural wonder. Apparently they like the volcanic water and always thrive in warm water with a need room to grow. The lake provides the perfect environment and the hotel wisely promotes this unique phenomenon as a marketing tool in its logo and with endless art creations all over the facilities. Advertisement   Hungarians and Austrians might carry a mosaic of a historical ambivalent relationship, but both people surly adore Lake Hévíz. The majority of guests in the hotel originate from those countries that share love for thermal baths. Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa is offering both food and entertainment with this fact in mind. Pleasant veteran General Manager Attila Fulop is heading skilled team members that work here for many years. Dressed with formal clothes they all recognize the guests who keep returning here. Loyal customers are the best proof for success. The menu at dinner is different each evening and the variety is one of the most generous I have seen. The bar is crowded each night and live dancing with different musicians each day are offered here. Guests of all ages are actually dancing. General Manager Fulop knows his work. A dream of a good hotelier is to keep his guests in its premises and not looking for alternatives elsewhere. A variety of different indoor pools in contrasting water temperatures are offered (photo by Motti Verses) Lotus is the key element here as this water flower really blossoms on the lake (photo by Motti Verses) The bar – live dancing with different musicians each evening (photo by Motti Verses) Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa by night (photo by Motti Verses) With General Manager Attila Fulop(left) – a true Hungarian professional hotelier(photo by Motti Verses) One question remains. Will Israelis flock to Hévíz? Hamat Gader hot springs site in the Yarmouk River valley, used since the classical antiquity, is one of the most popular attractions for Israelis. With that in mind and the endless daily flights from Ben Gurion airport to Budapest, the potential is certainly there. Especially in winter when the flight costs are rock bottom. Hévíz here we come.
