tartalom: + 1 Medicinal mud The medicinal mud which thickly covers the lake-bed is also worth mentioning. The unique medicinal mud of Hévíz contains organic and inorganic substances, and reduced sulphides also have special healing effects.
The bed of Lake Hévíz is covered by a 1-7 metre-thick layer of natural, mainly organic medicinal mud, which is dark-grey by colour and soft by texture. The thermal water and medicinal mud were formed in the Pannonic-sea tens of thousands of years ago, and they are suitable for complex physiotherapy treatments, and for the treatment of all kinds of rheumatic and locomotive diseases. The medicinal mud is applied as mud-pack during the treatments. According to the opinion of specialist doctors, a maximum of six body parts can be wrapped in mud at a time. The main effect of medicinal mud is to keep the hands and body parts warm. The duration of the mud treatment is 20 minutes, after which at least a 30 minute period of relaxation is recommended. It is recommended for the following diseases: in case of chronic musculoskeletal diseases, it is indicated for both degenerative, atherosclerotic disease forms and inflammatory diseases in case of certain orthopaedic, neurologic, medical and gynaecological diseases Mud packs can be carried out only on medical advice in Hévíz. Use the Hévíz mud as cosmetics! In addition to the traditional “wrapped” mud packs many cosmetic mud packs are also available these days in the beauty market – even those which were made of the Hévíz mud. The mud formed due to thousands of years of geological and biological processes has high humic acid and organic material content and heat retaining capacity, that is why it has been used in medicine for a long time. However, its cosmetic use is not entirely new. Experiments prove that it also has unique aesthetic effects: empties the excreta, enhances the metabolism of cells, increases the production of collagen, and the minerals inside refill the body. It is excellent for the smoothing of the face, neck and décolleté, and even for body shaping in case of using it as a treatment course. Its regular use enhances the defence mechanism of the immune system. The products made of mud smoothen and soften the skin. They have a beneficial effect on the renewal of the skin and connective tissue cells, reduce inflammation and the signs of aging, because the thermal effects dilate the capillaries, therefore the nutrients- and oxygen supply increases and as a result, the skin becomes more resistant.    These cosmetic products are only made of natural ingredients, their essential minerals, vitamins ensure the balanced functioning of the processes among the cells. Already after the first treatment, you can feel the change on your skin – it will have a silky, youthful, fresh and velvety touch.  Among the products based on mud can be found soaps, mud baths, masks, wraps, creams, facial cleansers, massage creams, body scrubs, balms and body lotions too. You can get more information about the mud products in our webshop or in the Tourinform Office in Hévíz! Feel free to try it!

tartalom: + 1 Thermal water, not only externally Among the different therapy treatments offered in Hévíz, drinking cure received significantly less attention than its beneficial effects would deserve it. However, the official effects of the drinking therapy using the thermal water of Hévíz can be obviously experienced by those suffering from acute gastro-enteritis and digestive disorders.
Of the use of the sulphuric water of Hévíz as a drinking cure Dr Noémi Gyarmati says: “It can be successfully used for enhancing intestinal activity and the generation of gastric acid, or in the case of acute bowel inflammation, constipation or haemorrhoid. It also reduces biliary disorders, and enhances the healing of upper respiratory tract infections. Thanks to its special content, it can be also used for relieving pain. Furthermore, not as part of a drinking cure, but for rinsing it can be successfully used for treating acute stomatitis.” Naturally, just like every other thermal water, there are contraindications for using the healing water of Hévíz: the consumption of the sulphuric water must be avoided in the case of acute hepatitis and cholangitis, or increased thyroid function. Drinking fountains for free use in the city: in the Rózsakert building (Rákóczi str 17-19.), from the Erzsébet királyé street  (Open: 8  am - 6 pm)

Veal ragout with cream and vegetables and dödölle of Zala Mayer Tibor and Veress Ferenc Chef's recommendation, from Hunguest Hotels   Ingredients (4 servings) 1/2 kg veal round 1/2 kg porcini mushrooms 2 cloves of garlic 1,5 dl dry white wine 2 dl vegetable broth 2 dl cream salt freshly ground black pepper 1 bunch of parsley 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil Preparation1. Heat the mixture of butter and olive oil and fry the veal cut into small but equal sized pieces, seasoned with salt and pepper in advance, and the finely chopped parsley and garlic.2.If every side of the meat cubes turned brown, pour the white wine and half of the vegetable broth. Cook over medium heat and half-covered until almost tender. Check it sometimes and pour some broth in it if it is not enough.3. In the meantime clean the mushrooms, cut them and add them when the meat is almost ready. Pour in the remaining vegetable broth and cook it until it is ready. 4. In the end pour in the cream and boil it. Season it with salt and pepper if it is necessary. If the sauce is too thin, thicken it with potato-starch.5. Serve it with freshly chopped parsley. Dödölle of Zala2 kg potatoes, salt according to taste, 2 onions 2 dl oil, 50 decagram flour This meal evokes my childhood, the free, barefoot summer times. My grandmother made it for me, whenever I wanted to. It is cheap, fast and very filling food. At the end of the month it stands everyone in good stead. Peel the potatoes cut them into small pieces, pour salty water over them to cover and cook them. Mash the cooked potatoes over the heat then sprinkle with flour and start to knead with a wooden spoon. It is a bit tiring procedure. It is OK if the batter is hard enough and the flour is completely worked off – it can be more or less, it depends on the quality of the potatoes- and our forehead is sweating. Turn off the cooker.Cut the onions into small cubes and fry them in oil until pink. Take a bigger pot and start to cut the ‘dödölle’ batter into big dumpling-shapes, then sprinkle with the onion and fat. If it is ready, serve it. It is very delicious freshly with sour cream, but if you have to warm it, fry it in a pan until it is crispy and serve it with some salad. Enjoy your meal!     Goose-giblets with rice Goose-giblets150 gram goose liver3 carrots2 turnipsa piece of celery1 onion200 gram green peasa bunch of parsley400 gram ricea tablespoonful of goose fata tablespoonful of oilsalt and pepper Put the goose-giblets into a saucepan with a carrot, a turnip and a piece of celery and add enough water to cover them, then cook until soft. If it is almost ready, add the goose meat, the gizzard, the heart, the chopped goose liver and the green peas and cook them together until soft, then season it with salt and pepper.Heat some oil in another saucepan, add the washed and cleaned rice and pour on it double quantity of water (a part of it can be the juice of the goose, but be careful, it should not be too greasy) and boil until soft. tartalom: + 1   Tomb of the Roman soldier The tomb of the Roman soldier, or the late Roman brick-tomb is located in the Egregy part of Heviz. The tomb was made out of bricks with quicklime. It has been discovered in 1925 when doing earthworks and it was fully intact. The objects found in the tomb were from the era of the Roman imperator Constantinus II. Bronze belt decoration, cloth clamps, knife made of iron, coins of the imperator and of course the skeleton of a Roman soldier were found. The findings were placed in the Balaton Museum located in Keszthely, and the skeleton was left on its place. In 1931 the ruins of a Roman cottage of the early Augustan age were discovered a few hundred meters to the East of the tomb, in the neighbourhood of the Villa Rustica excavated between 2001 and 2004. The house was built at the end of the 1st century. The findigs suggest that the building must have been richly decorated and it was still in use in the 4th century. When digging in the backyard of one of the houses of Egregyi Street a brick burning kiln was found. The items discovered in the neighbouring area testify that man of means have been staying here long time ago. For example on the way to the church to the Arpadian age there was a clay pot found, and there were 276 pieces of Roman coins from the 4th century in it. Look around in our 3D tour! Roman ruin garden Even the ancient Romans discovered and used the lake of Hévíz. This is shown by the roman ruin garden located at the end of Attila Street, which was completely renovated in 2011. The remains of the roman villa from the early Imperial times were discovered in 1931 and then the building of Villa Rustica was excavated between 2001 and 2003 in its vicinity. The house was built at the end of the 1st century. According to the findings it must have been a richly decorated building and it was used even in the 4th century. At the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries a large stone building was erected in its place which was 45 meters long and almost 23 meters wide, therefore more than 1000 square meters. The building had a porticus (columned porch) on the eastern side and some pools with warm, lukewarm and cold water. But it is not certain whether the building was the residential building (villa urbana) of the villa-farm, since there was no evidence of central heating. The building is believed to have been ruined towards the end of the 2nd century, but in the 3rd century it was rebuilt with other interior design. Even a Mithras shrine was built in. The foundation stone of the altar was discovered during the excavation. The shrine and the building were destroyed in the 4th century, but soon it was rebuilt. At the beginning of the 5th century it was ruined completely. The function of the building is uncertain also in this period. Probably it was used for some kind of economic activity. Look around in our 3D tour! Flavius wish ribbons at the ruins of Villa Rustica Hundreds of wishes written on ribbons make the Roman ruin garden, located at the Museum of Egregy at the end of Attila Street, decorated. Placing colourful ribbons revive a Roman legend.    The most well-known Hévíz legend about the formation of the lake and its miraculous effect is linked to the Roman Emperor Flavius Theodosius. According to the legend, Flavius suffered from infantile paralysis. Every day, his Christian nurse prayed to Virgin Mary asking for the boy’s recovery. Virgin Mary answered her prayers and brought forth water. A whole lake was formed from the thermal spring. The nurse bathed the ill child in the water of the lake regularly. Miraculously, Flavius got over his illness by the help of the water and became a strong, healthy ruler, the emperor of the Roman Empire. Out of gratitude, he declared Christianity the official religion throughout the realm in 391. The legendary curative lake is none other than Lake Hévíz, in the water of which thousands of patients have been healed and have regained the pleasure of healthy movement since then.   Local collections In Hévíz you can find recreation facilities not only for your body but for your mental condition as well. In the course of a nice afternoon walk it is worth visiting the Hévíz Museum Collection, which can find above the Fontana Cinema in the walking street. The permanent exhibition allows visitors to get insight into the 210-year past of Hévíz in the room of the local history. Visitors can also see the memorial room named after dr. Károly Moll, which was set up in commemoration of the famous doctors from Hévíz. In the Museum there are also some temporary exhibitions to be visited apart from the permanent one. The Museum’s permanent exhibitions are “History of Hévíz”, “Memories from Hévíz Spa”, ”Medical History Memorial Room for Senior dr. Károly Moll” and “Exhibitions of artist József Simon”. The outside front of the building is decorated with the work named “Spring” by Munkácsy Prize awarded ceramic artist János Németh. The Museum is open for visitors between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. There are no admission fees. If you come to Héviz for a fairly long time and you also consider cultural programs important during a medicinal cure, the Zsigmond Móricz Town Library might be interesting for you; you can borrow books both in Hungarian and foreign languages there. Beside the Museum you can also find temporary exhibitions on several other spots of the town, for instance, in the Gallery of the Fine Arts of the Aquamarine Hotel there are exhibitions regularly, where tourists can meet artists in person at the opening of the exhibitions or in the Show Room of the Magyar Csárda Restaurant being in service for more than 15 years, and major hotels also organize exhibitions of fine arts on temporary basis. The exhibitions may be visited free of charge. And once the Fontana Motion Picture Theatre has been mentioned, we recommend the cinema as an entertaining evening program for young visitors. Having a cinema is quite unusual in the area, as there is no cinema even in Keszthely. The cinema has a seating capacity of 104 persons. Recently new digital technology equipment has been installed; as a result, both the video and the sound technique meet the most modern requirements. However, we should warn visitors not to expect the standard of multiplex cinemas but they should imagine a nice cinema typical of small towns. Have fun and enjoy mental recreation. Look around in our 3D tour!

The Tourinform Office is located at the beginning of Rákóczi Street. If you are coming from Széchenyi Street you will find the Office is on your right. The tourist information office is open all year round and offers programs in the area and tourist information for the visitors. The office also provides internet facilities and bicycle rental services. If you carry on down Rákóczi Street towards the thermal bath it is worth looking at the buildings hiding behind the trees among boutiques, cafeterias and ice cream parlours. The pedestrian zone is bordered by villas built in the 1920s, which are nowadays - after significant restoration works-  accommodate apartments and cafeterias. Fontana Motion Picture Theatre (Fontana Filmszínház) is located half way down Rákóczi Street and opposite the id. Dr. Moll Károly Square with a fountain and the full size bronze statue of Károly Moll. Károly Moll is the „father” of weight bath, which he developed in Hévíz in the 1950s. The building of the Indoor bath is situated at the end of the street. The Therapeutic Centre (Terápiás Centrum) was handed over in 1968, which is nick-named by the locals as the winter bath. It was reconstructed in 2004 and there are plans to extend and further develop the building in the near future. We can view the Pantheon on the external wall of the building, and in the foyer the Jupiter stone is exhibited, which proves that people were living in this area already 2000 years ago. Look around in our 3D tour! Building of the City-hall The new building of the city-hall is located at the Kossuth Lajos street, it was constructed between 1998 and 1999 on the place of the former town-house. It was inaugurated on September 9th, 1999. The building is one of the important eyemarks of Heviz; it was built in 1950, and in 1997 the renovation was started behind the former town-hall. On January 31st, 1998 Bertalan Farkas, the first astronaut of Hungary and the mayor laid the foundation stone. The plans were prepared by Laszlo Benczur and Peter Takacs, under the co-ordination of Peter Reinholz Kossuth Prize-winning architect. The Building-trade Company of Zala county was implementing it. The useful floor-space of the building is 3367 m2. The office of the local government is located in the building, its employees receive the clients every working day. The southern side wing includes a conference and theatre hall for 200 persons, this facility serves not only the meetings of the city, but all other scientific and cultural events. Look around in our 3D tour! Art Cinema The official name of Hévíz Art Cinema is Fontana Filmszínház (Fontana Motion Picture Theatre). The Motion Picture Theatre has a projection room for 130 people, which was renovated in 2015. Recently new digital technology equipment has been installed ensuring up-to-date video and sound quality. Cafeterias The buildings located next to the main car park in Széchenyi Street are called „the row of cafeterias”.If you approach Hévíz from the direction of Lake Balaton, turn right at the first crossing to Széchenyi Street, and after passing the forest belt you can already see the cafeterias. If you fancy a tasty “lángos” (fried dough) or a grilled sausage, here you can find what you are looking for from the wide choice of delicacies offered by the best buffets. If you prefer a traditional dinner or lunch, don’t hesitate to treat yourself in one of the many restaurants of town. You can purchase Hévíz gifts and the must have swimming aid during your holiday at the gift shops located in between the cafeterias. Life music and entertainment programmes are also offered to the tourists in the evenings. Look around in our 3D tour! Egregy Wine Cellars The Egregy part of Hévíz town is famous for its gastronomic delicacies. From downtown you can access the wine cellars in 25 minutes on foot. On your way you will pass Jesus’ Heart Church (Jézus szíve templom) at the end of Zrínyi Street or you can visit the Roman excavation site at the end of Attila Street. In the evenings the wine cellars and restaurants built in between the rows of vines are magnets for the guests of the town. This is a great place for the guests - exhausted after bathing – to charge up with a nice dinner or enjoy a wine tasting event while listening to live music. Restaurants offer not only traditional Hungarian specialties, but also international dishes on their open air terraces or in the cosy wine cellars. If you carry on down Dombföldi Street among the wine cellars, you can reach the Arpadian Age Church, which is one the most beautiful built cultural heritage of Hévíz. Look around in our 3D tour! Cherubs The main entrance of the lake is guarded by two cherubs, which were made on behalf of the Festetics family at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and they are very similar to the Zsolnay family’s cherubs in Pécs. The dragon made of a lion and an eagle can also be found on Hévíz’s official coat of arms. The cherubs served the gods in the mythology of the ancient Semite folks. They stood in front of the gates and kept away the demons. Their images were engraved in the stones of kings’ palace gates or church gates, most likely that is why the Festetics family had them made as well.  According to the legend, if someone walks through between two cherubs without love in the heart, the cherubs start speaking. According to another storyteller not the cherubs but the copper rooster placed on one of the towers of the baths starts speaking, if someone leaves the town without love. But there has never been a precedent for this.    There are several artworks in the public places of the town; you can see a statue or sculpture nearly in every street, most of them were created by the famous sculptor, László Marton. In the park of the Lake Spa, known as Hévíz Statue Park, there is a group of statues including the busts of three outstanding figures of Hungarian literature: bust of Zsigmond Móricz (created by László Kutas), Mihály Csokonai Vitéz ( by József Rátonyi) and Dániel Berzsenyi (by Tibor Riger). You can see 13 memorial tablets placed on the wall of the Winter Spa to commemorate the most famous visitors of the Spa.

Acupressure Acupuncture Anti-aging Aquarobic Aroma light-therapy Ayurveda Balneotherapy Caldarium Fango Jacuzzi Jogging Chinese massage Cleopatra-bath Kneipp steps Laconium Lomi Lomi Nui Lymphatic massage Qi-Gong Paraffin treatment Shiatsu Step Aerobic Stretching Sole massage Thai massage Thalassotherapy Yumeiho   Acupressure In the course of the acupressure, the particular points of the body are massaged with finger pads or nails. As a result, the direction and the intensity of the flow of the chi, that is a vital force, in the meridians will be restored to the normal and healthy channel. Acupuncture Human has around 360 main acupuncture points, and through these points, certain disorders of the body may be stopped by using acupuncture needles. The acupuncture is quite effective against pains and it also stimulates blood flow, stabilizes circulation, increases the body energy level and improves the general state of health. Anti-agingIt comprises treatments which help you remain fit and young, including stress relief, exercise therapy, beautician techniques, change of eating habits, vitalizing substances, brain training, change of lifestyle, and many others. AquarobicIt is gymnastics performed in water and accompanied with instructions and mostly with music, which is protective to joints but it is also featured of training and massage as it requires force against the water pressure. Aroma light-therapyIt is not the scent what is primarily used in aroma-therapy treatments but the volatile oil extracted out of plants. Volatile oils have certain components that get locally active within the body and perform only a secondary effect through smelling. With lighting during the light therapy colored light penetrates deep into the skin so that to stimulate the positive reactions of the cells to everyday complaints and mental disorders. AyurvedaThe Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine and philosophy at the same time, which aims at the individual instead of the treatment of disease or symptoms by consideration and comparison of the individual habitus, climate, the seasons of the year and parts of the day, lifestyle, diet and many other aspects. BalneotherapyThis is a kind of treatment with medicinal water or so-called thermal mineral water not classified as medicinal water yet. It comprises drinking cure with such waters, inhalation, mud treatment, carbonated baths, and medicinal baths. CaldariumThis is one of the facilities used in Roman baths, which means hot water bathroom. The caldarium, usually tiled or covered with marble, in which people usually stay for 30 to 40 minutes, poses less burden on human organism than a sauna due to the lower temperatures (40-50 °C) and the humidity of the air (70-100%). FangoMud pack from ground volcanic rock is applied to a certain part or the whole of the body. Fango is capable of holding heat for a long period, rich in minerals and free of organic substances. It has been used for the treatment of rheumatism for centuries, and it is also used for beautician purposes. JacuzziThe water-jets directed to the particular points of the body and the massage promotes full relaxation. Due to the intensified blood circulation your body will get more oxygen so you’ll feel fit. The pores of skin get larger and due to the intensified blood circulation, your skin will be purified from toxins. As a result, the skin will be firmer and more elastic. JoggingJogging combines all the benefits of walking; it conditions the heart, improves muscle tone and strength, relieves stress, and can help with a variety of health problems, such as osteoporosis, heart disease and arthritis. Chinese massageThe Chinese massage may be considered as a kind of acupuncture combined with stretching. The massage may consist of various parts. It may refer to the spine massage and the Chinese head massage aiming at the head and neck. During the massage, the acupuncture points are treated as well. The Chinese massage also includes the stretching of muscles or joints. Cleopatra-bath Cleopatra, the Egyptian Queen did her best to fight ageism; she tried to make her skin soft and healthy by having a bath with donkey milk in it. The beauty care products named after her suggest having a bath with a mixture of milk and vegetable oil. These products are based on the conditioning and nourishing effects that milk and vegetable oils have on the skin. Kneipp stepsYou tread cold water stepping on pebbles placed on the bottom of a tub while walking around. The legs are lifted out of the tub at every step so that the cold water and the warm air will provide the contrasting bath character. The pebbles gently massage the reflex zones of the soles initiating a certain regulatory process. LaconiumIt is a cool version of the Finnish sauna. The temperature may not exceed 55 C° and the degree of humidity is insignificant. It enhances congestion and supports the immune system. Lomi Lomi NuiThis traditional Polynesian massage is one of the most pampering therapies of the Hawaiian kahunas. The massage starts by rubbing the body with “ti” leaves, and the body is heated with hot stones. Then while the lomi-lomi masseur is dancing with traditional dance-steps, imitating the steps of a frigate bird, around the nearly naked body of the patient, lying on the massage bench, he is giving the treatment, which means soft smoothing and kneading motions of the pad of his/her forearm and palm. Finally, he/she completes the massage with a ritual ablution of the body. Lymphatic massageThis is a special kind of massage that makes lymph fluid drain away. The lymph flow may be stimulated along the lymph vessel by smoothing with gentle pressure, thus the tissues may be purified from the roughage. As a result, the skin becomes cleaner, better supplied with blood and firmer. This massage activates the immune system, promotes the recovery of the cells and tissues and reduces the susceptibility to inflammation. It is highly recommended as an additional treatment to detox cures. Qi-GongIt is a generic term to mean a wide range of heath-preserving practices. This ancient method combines the mental concentration, breathing technique and physical exercise so as to enhance and maintain your vital energy. The technique requires regular practice but it is easy to acquire for any age group depending on the fitness level of the individual. Paraffin treatmentAfter smearing your skin with thermo cream you should apply the heated paraffin, which will harden on your body. This will temporarily hinder the skin respiration promoting the absorption of the cream full of effective substances. The paraffin pack contains alga, which is a fat-dissolving agent with high iodine content. It makes skin spectacularly firm, smooth and velvety. ShiatsuShiatsu is based on the ancient Japanese medicine and philosophy, but it has also been affected by the modern western medicine. It is suitable for preventing diseases, locomotor and mental disorders or just for a pleasant sensual and spiritual journey in the universe of your inner self. According to the Taoist philosophy the energy – prana, qi or chi – flows continuously both in the universe and in human body. The therapist treats the patients on the acupuncture spots along the meridian lines because these spots provide access to the various organs. Step-AerobicStepping on and off a platform may enhance the development of the balance between the energy level of the sigh tensors and flexors. Such balance plays an important role in the prevention of certain sports injuries. In well-organized step training the choreography and the step combinations match the rhythm of the music used for the training. StretchingIt means a set of stretching and relaxing exercises. Painless muscle system of good tone is required for coordinated injury-free motion. While being used, muscles perform repeating motions of a small extent, that’s why they tend to grow stiff soon. These exercises help you loosen your stiff muscles of poor tone. Sole massageIt has been used in Asia for five thousand years and nowadays we can see its revival. It protects and improves your physical and mental health without any side-effects within a short period if time. It helps you prevent diseases and stimulates the self-healing mechanism of the organism. Massaging the sole opens a way to affect the central nervous system, circulation and internal organs as it is extremely rich in nerve endings. In the reflex zones related to the particular organs, crystalline lumps of various sizes may be felt which could often be sensitive or even painful. The aim is to rub off these deposits and detoxify the body, improve blood circulation and stimulate the self-healing capacity. Thai massageAn Indian medical man was the first to use this technique in Thailand 2500 years ago. In the course of time it changed but it has preserved its bases up to this day. The massage is carried out with hand, elbow, sole or knee along the so called meridian lines connecting the acupuncture spots. You can enjoy this massage wearing a comfortable cotton T-shirt and cotton trousers. It has a relaxing effect, reduces tension and pain and affects muscles, interstitial tissues, joints, the autonomic nervous system, organs, blood circulation as well as the lines and spots harmonizing energy. Thalasso therapySince the mid-19th century the thelasso therapy - -derives from the Greek word "Thalassa" = sea – has combines the holistic and the wellness experiences for the body and soul. A French doctor called La Bounnadiére was the first to use the designation in 1867, and since then it has been associated with soothing and regenerating effects of the therapy applying sea water, seaweed and sea climate. YumeihoYumeiho is a kind of massage originated from Japan. It was created by Sajoni Masayuki, who used the elements of martial arts of Chinese Buddhist monasteries. The masseur kneads the body thoroughly, stretches the joints and loosens the blocks to make motion and energy flow free. The treatment combines the techniques of acupressure and the manual therapy with eastern physical exercises.

tartalom: + 1 Adventure-park, golf and ballooning, segway tours Hévíz seems to be and “island of calm”, where everything slows down a little bit; People walk slowly here, motorists do not keep moving about at full speed and visitors may spend even hours sitting on a bench. Visitors come here to relax, in fact. However, while relaxing, everybody has a desire to participate in one or another special program so that they will have something to tell about to neighbours or friends at home. We recommend certain special programs to fearless and adventuresome tourists irrespectively of age group. People, who are attracted by height, or who would prefer to explore the secrets of depth, or who simply want to raise their adrenalin level, can find a wide range of activities to make their own choice from. The one and a half hours spent ballooning is an unforgettable experience for everybody. You can gaze at the hilly surface of the Zala area in the height as well as the water of the Balaton changing all the time and the well-kept shore decorated with houses, gardens and parks. At the end of a one-hour journey you may also take part in a dedicatory ceremony. It is the cavers who are the best at showing you the secrets of the depth and springs. You can also join cave tours guided by experts. Please find out the times of cave tours in the Tourinform Office. If you already at the Tourinform office you have to study the services of the High-Tech Sport Basis. The tour on segway, on this fantastic vehicle offers an unforgettable experience for children, adults, the young, the elderly, couples, families and friends alike. Those longing for adventure, experience and relaxation will be guaranteed to enjoy themselves if they take a tour with us. The original American Segway provides a supreme experience. You would not believe how easy it is to use! It allows you to feel freedom and the untouched sensation of melting into the nature, and it also helps to get over our physical boundaries. It is simply a wonderful experience, which may return even in our dreams. It is a must to try it.
Beyond all these we call your attention to the Tavirózsa Adventure Park or the Spiderland Adventure Park or the go-cart track in Gyenesdiás located 10 km from Hévíz. These two activites are recommended mainly for young and middle-aged companies or for purpose of team building training. If you prefer quieter leisure activities, you might enjoy spending some of your time on the golf-course or sailing on Lake Balaton, where you can admire the beauty of the Lake. Choose among of the various programs by clicking on our program offers.

Hévíz-Egregy/ 7,95 km/ ascent: 75 m Distance: 7,95 km | Ascent: 75 m | Difficulty: easy

Hévíz-Egregy bikeroutr map

  1. Start point at the Large Car Park
  2. You pass by well-kept private houses in Attila Street
  3. The ruins of a Villa Rustica, the Egregy Museum, a dry Kneipp path and a herb garden can be found in the Roman Ruin Garden. In the ruin garden several sculptures can be seen, such as the Danish dog statue sitting in the gateway called "The Gateway to Home", the Emperor Flavius Theodosius with his nurse, and "The Fawn", which may have been an ornament on a late Roman tomb.
  4. The green Church of the Heart of Jesus, also known as the Fradi Church with a memorial park for the victims of the war in its garden.
  5. After 600 metres along the Egregy row of wineries, you reach the church of St. Magdalene, a precious Árpád-era monument.
  6. The street named after the famous Hévíz doctor Dr János Babócsay offers a wonderful panoramic view of Hévíz, so it is worth tackling the small ascent at the beginning.
  7. The seven towers of the Church of the Holy Spirit, the unique dove-wing-shaped floor plan and striking blue colour attract the attention of visitors from afar. The church, together with the Town Hall, was completed in 1999.
  8. At the end of Vörösmarty Street, you can see impressive villa buildings, which were the first villas of Spa Hévíz, such as the Sorg sanatorium or the House of the Officials. The newest church of Heviz, the Icon of the Holy Mother of God "Fountain of Life” Orthodox church with its spired tower is located next to the cycle path.
  9. Bypassing the main attraction of the town, the Lake Baths - and its two entrances, the Festetics Bathhouse and the summer entrance on Deák Square -, you arrive back in the centre of Hévíz.

Distance: 27 km | Ascent: 413 m | Difficulty: difficult, mountain bikes are recommended

Hévíz-Rezi-Cserszegtomaj-Hévíz map

  1. The starting point of the tour is the Tourinform Office, where you can also rent a bicycle. For this tour, we recommend tracking or mountain bikes.
  2. You pass by well-kept private houses on Attila Street
  3. The ruins of a Villa Rustica, the Egregy Museum, a dry Kneipp path and a herb garden can be found in the Roman Ruin Garden. In the ruin garden several sculptures can be seen, such as the Danish dog statue sitting in the gateway called "The Gateway to Home", the Emperor Flavius Theodosius with his nurse, and "The Fawn", which may have been an ornament of a late Roman tomb.
  4. The green Church of the Heart of Jesus, also known as the Fradi Church with a memorial park for the victims of the war in its garden.
  5. At the green church, the tour is continued along Zrinyi Street, the street under the row of cellars of Egregy and the Church of St. Magdalene. The asphalt road ends after a short road section.
  6. You ride past the Jewish cemetery of Karmacs, which was used by the Jewish community of Hévíz from the 19th century until the end of the World War. The cemetery was nicely renovated in 2012.
  7. Following the blue sign, it is worth taking a short break at the Gyöngyös Betyárcsárda (Highwayman’s Tavern), which was built in 1729 as a manorial tavern. Near the tavern, a willow tree marks the graves of the highwaymen Pista Kökes and Illés Vak.
  8. Past the tavern, towards the Meleg hill, the road leads to the small wine-growing village of Rezi. The almost 6-kilometre stretch climbs steadily. You follow the blue sign mostly on an asphalted road to Rezi.
  9. In the charming centre of Rezi, you can see a statue of Cardinal Mindszenty carved in a lime tree in the garden of St.Luke's Church.
  10. Several well-marked hiking trails lead to the castle from the village. Whichever route you choose, you can reach the castle ruins on a dirt road, so from here you will need a mountain bike. The castle of Rezi was built sometime in the 11-12th centuries. It changed hands several times and was blown up for strategic reasons at the end of the 16th century.
  11. On the way back, we pass the Dino adventure park on the Rezi road and continue parallel with the Csókakő stream to Cserszegtomaj. Holes and caves dissolved by ancient hot springs can be found in the area around the Meleg hill. The Csókakő (Jackdaw stone) got its name from the fact that its hard-to-access cavities were used by jackdaws.
  12. Passing by the Local Government’s Office of Cserszegtomaj, you continue past the entrance to the Kútbarlang (Well Cave). The cave was discovered in 1930 and it can only be visited with a permit.
  13. Another attraction of Cserszegtomaj is the privately-owned Margaret Lookout Tower, built in the early 2000s.
  14. Passing by the Dobogóhalom and the Balaton Ballooning airstrip we return to the centre of Hévíz. Dobogó (‘stamping, drumming’) is said to have got its name from the strange drumming sound of horses' hooves on the hill, which is home to tombs from the Migration Period.

Distance: 17,6 km | Ascent: 100 m | Difficulty: easy

Hévíz-Keszthely-Hévíz route on map

  1. Starting from the Tourinform office in Hévíz, we take the beautiful panoramic road around Lake Hévíz in the Protective Forest.
  2. One of Hungary's most beautiful cycle paths is the 2.5 km cycle path between Hévíz and Keszthely, which leads through a line of bald cypresses towards the Balaton Bike Circle cycle path. The Hévíz-Keszthely route, once peaty and waterlogged, was a challenge for horse-drawn carriages 150 years ago. Today it is an asphalted cycle path through a beautiful wild landscape.
  3. The bike tour passes several sites closely connected to the Festetics family, the most important of which is the family palace, the third-largest baroque palace in Hungary with 101 rooms. The Helikon exhibitions include the Museum of Carriages, the Hunting and Model Railway Exhibition, the Amazon House's exhibition entitled “Travels of the Aristocrats" and the Palm and Bird House. The palace garden is open to the public.
  4. The cycle path leads through the pedestrian street of Keszthely to the Main Square, where you can see the Holy Trinity statue, the Town Hall and the Balaton Theatre. The ruins of Keszthely's castle and the oldest church of the town, the Our Lady of Hungary Parish Church, can also be found on the square.
  5. The beautiful villas of Erzsébet Királyné (Queen Elisabeth) Street recall the wealth of Keszthely at the turn of the century. The monument in the Helikon Park commemorates the literary meetings organised by György Festetics.
  6. You reach the shore of Lake Balaton passing two historic buildings, Hotel Hullám and Hotel Balaton, which need to be renovated. In the summer months, you can see the West Balaton bay from above when riding the Ferris wheel set up here. The towered building of the Island Beach is now part of the Municipal Beach, which you cycle around to the Halászcsárda (Fisherman's Tavern).
  7. It's worth stopping for a refreshing drink at the thatched-roof tavern, which opened in 1934. The Helikon beach next to the restaurant was often visited by members of the Festetics family, including Princess Maria Haugwitz and little Prince George.
  8. Passing the Dormitory of the Georgikon University, we reach the institutional houses of the Szendrey-site district via the former farm road of the Festetics estate. Júlia Szendrey, the wife of the famous Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi, was born here, and her birthplace has been marked by a memorial plaque since 1923.
  9. Although the surface of the Fenyves (Pinewood) alley is not asphalted, it is easily accessible by a city bicycle. The alley was the favourite route of Princess Mary Hamilton, the wife of Tasziló Festetics II. She had the black pine trees planted that surround you while cycling along the alley, at the end of which you return to the cycle path.
  10. On the outskirts of Keszthely, you pass through the chestnut grove and return to the same cycle path you took at the beginning of the tour.

Distance: 54 km | Ascent: Elevation: 264 m | Difficulty: moderately hard

Type of the roads: dirt road along the River Zala to Szentgyörgyvár and the Kis-Balaton visitor centre, asphalted cycle path between the visitor centre and Kányavári island. On the way back: side road between Zalavár and Alsópáhok.

Hévíz-Kis-Balaton (Kányavári-Island) - Hévíz - map of the route.

  1. Starting from the Tourinform office in Hévíz (2 Rákóczi Street), you take the beautiful panoramic road around Lake Hévíz in the Protective Forest.
  2. From Hévíz towards Alsópáhok, you continue on a gently ascending cycle path, where you reach the Main Street of the village and, on the opposite side, you can see the impressive building of the Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Then you pass the Kolping Hotel Spa & Family Resort, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the church. The name Páh was also used by several settlements in the area, such as Szentandráspáh (today Hévíz), Boldogasszonypáh, Hosszúpáh, Felpáh. This echo word refers to the occupation of the people living here, the leather-working.
  3. The road to Nemesboldogasszonyfa climbs up to the Zalavár ridge in a nicely unperceived way. Along the way, you can see the “Plots of Zalaers", i.e. beautifully restored and tended cellars and vineyards.
  4. In Szentgyörgyvár, you pass the cellar of the Bezerics winery, the almost 300-year-old building of the Széchenyi cellar. Then you reach the embankment of the River Zala, which is part of the cycle path but is only paved after the Kis-Balaton House. At this point, you pass Lake Hídvégi (meaning: lake at the end of the bridge), which is a dammed-up part of the River Zala and was established during the first stage of the reconstruction of the Kis-Balaton.
  5. The Kis-Balaton House is an exhibition area of the Balaton-Uplands National Park with a canteen, toilets, a playground and several interesting attractions, such as the Millennium Monument designed by Imre Makovecz, the ruins of St. Adorján’s Church, the Cyrill-Method Memorial Column, and St. Stephen's Chapel.
  6. In Hídvégpuszta, it is worth stopping at the fish ladder, next to which there are interesting wooden structures, the birdwatching huts, built by Zurich students.
  7. At Kis-Balaton, your first destination is Kányavári Island, where you can cross an imposing wooden bridge and take a break on the 2 km long, 500 m wide island.
  8. On the way back, staying on the main road, you pass the Fenyvespuszta Petting Zoo in Zalavár towards Sármellék, where you ride past the airport and continue on the road towards Alsópáhok. Along this route, there are sections where a cycle path has already been built.
  9. Leaving Kis-Balaton behind, you ride via Sármellék and return to your starting point, the Tourinform Office in Hévíz.

Distance: 38,6 km | Ascent: 153 m | Difficulty: easy

Type of the roads: cycle path all the way long

Hévíz-Balatongyörök Szépkilátó - Hévíz map of the route.

  1. Starting from the Tourinform office in Hévíz (2 Rákóczi Street), you take the beautiful panoramic road around Lake Hévíz in the Protective Forest.

  6. You reach the shore of Lake Balaton passing two historic buildings, Hotel Hullám and Hotel Balaton, which need to be renovated. In the summer months, you can see the West Balaton bay from above when riding the Ferris wheel set up here. The Keszthely sign on the lakeside next to the pier is popular with those who want to take some photos.
  7. On the lakeshore, you head towards Gyenesdiás, but first, you pass the former goose pasture of Keszthely, which is now a popular beach, called the Libás (Goose) Beach. Gyenesdiás is today a popular family-friendly village. Until the last century, the press houses of Keszthely residents stood in the tiny villages of Diás and Falud.
  8. After leaving Gyenesdiás, you ride through Vonyarcvashegy. This section of the cycle path runs in the shade of willow trees, right along the shore.
  9. Before leaving Vonyarcvashegy, on the right side of the cycle path, a forest path leads up to the chapel of St Michael, which was built by forty fishermen in 1729. According to popular belief, the fishermen miraculously made it back to shore after being stranded on a block of ice during a winter fishing trip. From the chapel, in the shade of black pines, there is a wonderful panorama of the western bay of Lake Balaton and the buttes. You can leave your bike at the parking lot next to the cycle path, the few minutes' walk is well worth the detour.
  10. In Balatongyörök you ride to the pier, around which you can see beautifully restored peasant houses with thatched roofs.
  11. 11. Out of Balatongyörök, next to the Roman spring, which today stands alone under the Szépkiáltó, there was a Roman villa in the 3rd and 4th centuries.
  12. After the spring, the cycle path climbs up to Szépkilátó (Lookout point), which was a favourite resting place of Lady Mary Hamilton, the wife of Taszilo Festetics II.
  13. On the way back, you take the familiar cycle path towards Gyenesdiás, where you pass the Imre Festetics Animal Park and return to the starting point of the tour, the Tourinform Office in Hévíz.

Distance: 47 km (5 km by boat) | Ascent: 138 m | Type of the road: cycle path or bicycle lane on a low-traffic road

Boat timetable: Please note that the tour can only be completed in the summer months! Usually, the boat departs at 10.10 in the morning from Balatonmáriafürdő to Balatongyörök, and the return boat departs at 10.45 from Balatongyörök to Balatonmáriafürdő. During the high season (from 02.07 to 31.08.) there are three boats a day between the two piers.

West Bay Round trip map

  1. Starting from the Tourinform office in Hévíz, you take the beautiful panoramic road around Lake Hévíz in the Protective Forest.
  4. The beautiful villas of Erzsébet Királyné (Queen Elisabeth) Street recall the wealth of Keszthely at the turn of the century. The monument in the Helikon Park commemorates the literary meetings organised by György Festetics.
  5. We reach the shore of Lake Balaton passing two historic buildings, Hotel Hullám and Hotel Balaton, which need to be renovated. In the summer months, you can see the West Balaton bay from above when riding the Ferris wheel set up here. The towered building of the Island Beach is now part of the Municipal Beach, which you cycle around to the Halászcsárda (Fisherman's Tavern).
  6. It's worth stopping for a refreshing drink at the thatched-roof tavern, which opened in 1934. The Helikon Beach next to the restaurant was often visited by members of the Festetics family, including Princess Maria Haugwitz and little Prince George.
  7. Leaving Keszthely behind, you reach the centre of the once-famous Festetics stud-farm, the Festetics manor and the small mansion in Fenékpuszta. It is currently a construction site, so it is not worth stopping here.
  8. The area around Fenékpuszta has been continuously inhabited since Roman times, as it was the crossing point between Lake Balaton and the former marshy swampy site of today's Kis-Balaton. There was also a shipyard and a ferry crossing here. The first wooden bridge on the River Zala was built in 1839, and the bridge toll could be paid at the now 400-year-old Customs House.
  9. At the Zala bridge, the junction of the M76 is currently under construction and the new cycle path is also being built towards Balatonberény, where you can still experience how wild and marshy Lake Balaton was formerly.
  10. After a mixture of new and old holiday homes at Balatonmáriafürdő, you reach the pier and cross the lake by boat and get to the north shore at Balatongyörök. Check the timetable before you start your bike tour.
  11. In Balatongyörök, you can see a beautiful thatched peasant house if you cycle along the designated cycle path towards Vonyarcvashegy. On your left, you will soon see the baroque St Michael's Chapel built on a rocky hill. The chapel, the story of which is linked to the legend of forty fishermen, is only a few minutes walk from the cycle path and is worth a stop to admire the panoramic view of Lake Balaton.
  12. Cycle along the shore of Lake Balaton until you reach Keszthely, where you can join the Hévíz-Keszthely cycle path if you ride on to the town centre. The Hévíz-Keszthely cycle path will take you back to Hévíz.

On two wheels

Choose an outdoor spot for sports activities whenever it is possible. While you are on holiday, a lake-shore area, the edge of a forest or a park could be the most ideal spot for active recreation.

Hévíz and its surroundings provide you with good cycling facilities; there are a number of built cycle tracks and marked cycle routes. While cycling, you can get to know the towns and superb landscapes of the Balaton Highlands, the volcanic hills and the valleys hiding between the shore hills as well as the wildlife of the Kis-Balaton. You can hire a bike in various places, including tourist offices, hotels and even guest houses.

Opening on August 4, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. in Protective forest.

The essence of the pART project is to consider the forest itself as an art space, and let nature itself be the central component of the work of art. Art is not alien to its environment, on the contrary: it is an integral part of the landscape. The creations are not made to last forever, but are volatile and changeable, just like nature. They are part of a permanent cycle, while the forest itself becomes a gallery and also the subject of art.

We will introduce the artists and the exhibition after the opening!

Anyone who knows the area and has seen the exhibition - which is not only about the forest but also about the forest itself - will understand the choice of title. The pART forest exhibit is located on the forest path next to the northern stream of Lake Hévíz. The exhibition of more than 60 images of the wildlife in the nature reserve allows you to walk through the forest and discover the hidden beauties that are usually difficult to see with the naked eye or remain hidden during an ordinary walk. The pictures, stretched on and between trees, show wonderful birds, special plants, small animals and insects. Many of the works are paintings by nature illustrator Márton Zsoldos. The exhibition also includes a few photos taken by nature conservation guards Előd Búzás and Gábor Sinka in the immediate vicinity of Lake Hévíz.

The forest exhibition opens with a wooden gate bearing the motto of the exhibition:

"Open to nature!"

Tamás Pálffy from the organizer Hévízi Turisztikai Np Kft. emphasized that the whole Forest Ministry programme series was organized taking into account the nature conservation, sustainability and green event aspects. Each event tries to leave as small an ecological footprint as possible, and in all its elements it strives to bring people, nature and cultural experiences closer together in a way that only interferes with nature in a small but in no way harmful way.

For this exhibition, recycled wooden picture frames donated by local residents were used, and sugar cane was used for fixing. The forest exhibition is expected to be on display until 30 September, but this may change depending on the use of natural materials and weather conditions. Durability was not an objective in this case.

However, the gate will remain! Because whether or not there is a pART Forest Tour in the Hévíz Forest, the message is always the same: Open to nature!

Venue of the programs How to reach the Forest? Come by bus, bicycle, roller or on foot! You can reach the Forest easily from the Deák Square, Ady Endre street and via the Festetics Alley bicycle roads from the direction of Keszthely-Hévíz and Hévíz-Alsópáhok, from the Farmers Market throught the little walkways in the woods. There are paths barrier-free and suitable for running, which are connecting the Waterlily Trail to the West and North-Protective Forest. You can get to know the swamp world in the lower Protective Forest from the plank trail, and in the upper Forest you can look down to the town from the canopy loookout tower. Not so far from the forest the Farmers Market awaits you three times a week, also restaurants, buffets, opened daily, assigned cyclepath, bicycle storage and accesible public toilet is available hardly by the venue.

The main aim of the program is to see the forest as a protected natural value while we also show it as an existing place for culture and art. We would like to connect the man-nature-art trio to each other to create a new unity with the help of cultural events.

What do WE do to reach this?

  • we do not intervene in the circle of nature with our events, we do not create alien objects in the forest
  • we do not set stages, lighting or an auditorium: everything stays natural
  • we only use portable devices
  • the number of attendees are limited to 50 people/event
  • we do not spend more than 3 hours in the forest at one occasion
  • we do not litter, and we try to reduce the ecological foot print of the event to the minumum
  • we honour the rules of the forest - we do not make noise, we do not harm the flora and fauna, we do not pollute the air and we do not disturb the life of the night forest
  • we didn't buy new devices for the programs
  • we minimalise the usage of plastic
  • we give eco-friendly and sustainable gifts for the participants of the guided eco-tours

What can YOU do for our forest?

  • don't litter in the forest
  • protect the flora and fauna of the forest
  • do not leave the beaten path. You can't know if there is a small hedgehog family hiding among the fallen leaves or a new tree is about to grow out of the ground
  • be aware that our events are micro events - here experience is more than comfort
  • our programs are free of charge, but you can buy a souvenir in the Tourinform Office if you'd like to support what we do
  • come to our events on foot or by bicycle or by public transport
  • bring water with you and we provide you fresh water to refill your flasks
  • take a picture, shoot a video or a selfie during or events or in the Protective Forest and share the experience on social media, use #IloveHévíz
