The evolution of 8 bits

Until 1st June, 2024

Everybody is welcome!

In 1947, the countries of the Eastern Bloc were not only physically but also technologically isolated from the Western world. The countries that imposed a trade embargo, including Hungary, created the so-called COCOM (Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls) list, which was a blacklist containing high-tech products and mainly affected technologies that can also be used in the military industry, such as IT devices . The products on the list were not allowed to be exported to embargoed countries, KGST member countries and China. This seclusion generated the enormous development and intellectual innovation that gave birth to such inventions as
such as the floppy, or the first portable computer, which was created by a Hungarian inventor.

In our exhibition, we present the history of domestic IT from 1965 to the end of the 1980s. The backbone of the exhibition's material is the Hungarian Old Computer collection of collector Zsolt Vidovenyecz. From simple calculators to state-of-the-art machines at the time, we present the era through hundreds of objects, and try to evoke its atmosphere as well. Colorful with working machines and interiors, our exhibition cannot miss the games and the legendary machines on which they ran. The commodore 64, the Amiga and the games, PAC MAN, Super Márió, Wizard of wor are all here in the museum and can be tried.

With our exhibition, we also pay tribute to the memory of János Neumann, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of his birth.
