Doing sports can sometimes cause serious muscle, joint or bone injuries. Sometimes injuries happen during the period of active sports, sometimes problems develop after years of active sports. But you don't have to live with pain.

Although musculoskeletal complaints are similar, athletes require a different type of treatment.

For athletes, the recovery process is more than just pain relief.

It also includes a proper diet, activation of the body, and mental refreshment. For this purpose, the packages offered to sportsmen and sportswomen in Hévíz contain medical treatments, relaxation programmes, active leisure activities and a wide range of menus that can be easily integrated into the diet. For athletes, personalisation is also evident as the treatments should be in line not only with the severity of the problem but also with the athlete's lifestyle, training schedule and competition calendar.

The following hotels have also put together tailor-made offers for athletes.

The St. Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Hévíz provides medicinal treatments in the framework of in-patient or out-patient care.

Water's buoyancy relieves pressure on joints, minerals soothe pain, the suspension helps correct spinal deformities

It is no wonder that swimming is one of the most recommended sports. Bathing in hot thermal water is the best natural treatment for joints. And the suspension is the most effective "medicine" for the spine. There is only one place in the world where these three factors can be combined.

Swimming and being suspended, i.e. floating in a vertical position, in Lake Hévíz can only be experienced in Hévíz. The right water composition, water temperature, water depth and water surface of sufficient size are only given here.

Swimming because it is a type of movement in which gravity has only a small effect on the body, and due to the buoyancy of the water, you can strengthen your muscles and joints without putting them under strain. Swimming, on the other hand, can exercise the entire musculature of the body, but it is also good for the spine because it helps to correct spinal deformities. In addition, thermal water has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, and bathing in hot water has a stress-relieving effect on the whole body. From this point of view, it provides a complex therapeutic experience for the bather.

It has a great advantage: it can be done at any time. Although there are specific cases where it is not recommended, it is the best and most natural treatment for the vast majority of people.

Acupressure Acupuncture Anti-aging Aquarobic Aroma light-therapy Ayurveda Balneotherapy Caldarium Fango Jacuzzi Jogging Chinese massage Cleopatra-bath Kneipp steps Laconium Lomi Lomi Nui Lymphatic massage Qi-Gong Paraffin treatment Shiatsu Step Aerobic Stretching Sole massage Thai massage Thalassotherapy Yumeiho   Acupressure In the course of the acupressure, the particular points of the body are massaged with finger pads or nails. As a result, the direction and the intensity of the flow of the chi, that is a vital force, in the meridians will be restored to the normal and healthy channel. Acupuncture Human has around 360 main acupuncture points, and through these points, certain disorders of the body may be stopped by using acupuncture needles. The acupuncture is quite effective against pains and it also stimulates blood flow, stabilizes circulation, increases the body energy level and improves the general state of health. Anti-agingIt comprises treatments which help you remain fit and young, including stress relief, exercise therapy, beautician techniques, change of eating habits, vitalizing substances, brain training, change of lifestyle, and many others. AquarobicIt is gymnastics performed in water and accompanied with instructions and mostly with music, which is protective to joints but it is also featured of training and massage as it requires force against the water pressure. Aroma light-therapyIt is not the scent what is primarily used in aroma-therapy treatments but the volatile oil extracted out of plants. Volatile oils have certain components that get locally active within the body and perform only a secondary effect through smelling. With lighting during the light therapy colored light penetrates deep into the skin so that to stimulate the positive reactions of the cells to everyday complaints and mental disorders. AyurvedaThe Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine and philosophy at the same time, which aims at the individual instead of the treatment of disease or symptoms by consideration and comparison of the individual habitus, climate, the seasons of the year and parts of the day, lifestyle, diet and many other aspects. BalneotherapyThis is a kind of treatment with medicinal water or so-called thermal mineral water not classified as medicinal water yet. It comprises drinking cure with such waters, inhalation, mud treatment, carbonated baths, and medicinal baths. CaldariumThis is one of the facilities used in Roman baths, which means hot water bathroom. The caldarium, usually tiled or covered with marble, in which people usually stay for 30 to 40 minutes, poses less burden on human organism than a sauna due to the lower temperatures (40-50 °C) and the humidity of the air (70-100%). FangoMud pack from ground volcanic rock is applied to a certain part or the whole of the body. Fango is capable of holding heat for a long period, rich in minerals and free of organic substances. It has been used for the treatment of rheumatism for centuries, and it is also used for beautician purposes. JacuzziThe water-jets directed to the particular points of the body and the massage promotes full relaxation. Due to the intensified blood circulation your body will get more oxygen so you’ll feel fit. The pores of skin get larger and due to the intensified blood circulation, your skin will be purified from toxins. As a result, the skin will be firmer and more elastic. JoggingJogging combines all the benefits of walking; it conditions the heart, improves muscle tone and strength, relieves stress, and can help with a variety of health problems, such as osteoporosis, heart disease and arthritis. Chinese massageThe Chinese massage may be considered as a kind of acupuncture combined with stretching. The massage may consist of various parts. It may refer to the spine massage and the Chinese head massage aiming at the head and neck. During the massage, the acupuncture points are treated as well. The Chinese massage also includes the stretching of muscles or joints. Cleopatra-bath Cleopatra, the Egyptian Queen did her best to fight ageism; she tried to make her skin soft and healthy by having a bath with donkey milk in it. The beauty care products named after her suggest having a bath with a mixture of milk and vegetable oil. These products are based on the conditioning and nourishing effects that milk and vegetable oils have on the skin. Kneipp stepsYou tread cold water stepping on pebbles placed on the bottom of a tub while walking around. The legs are lifted out of the tub at every step so that the cold water and the warm air will provide the contrasting bath character. The pebbles gently massage the reflex zones of the soles initiating a certain regulatory process. LaconiumIt is a cool version of the Finnish sauna. The temperature may not exceed 55 C° and the degree of humidity is insignificant. It enhances congestion and supports the immune system. Lomi Lomi NuiThis traditional Polynesian massage is one of the most pampering therapies of the Hawaiian kahunas. The massage starts by rubbing the body with “ti” leaves, and the body is heated with hot stones. Then while the lomi-lomi masseur is dancing with traditional dance-steps, imitating the steps of a frigate bird, around the nearly naked body of the patient, lying on the massage bench, he is giving the treatment, which means soft smoothing and kneading motions of the pad of his/her forearm and palm. Finally, he/she completes the massage with a ritual ablution of the body. Lymphatic massageThis is a special kind of massage that makes lymph fluid drain away. The lymph flow may be stimulated along the lymph vessel by smoothing with gentle pressure, thus the tissues may be purified from the roughage. As a result, the skin becomes cleaner, better supplied with blood and firmer. This massage activates the immune system, promotes the recovery of the cells and tissues and reduces the susceptibility to inflammation. It is highly recommended as an additional treatment to detox cures. Qi-GongIt is a generic term to mean a wide range of heath-preserving practices. This ancient method combines the mental concentration, breathing technique and physical exercise so as to enhance and maintain your vital energy. The technique requires regular practice but it is easy to acquire for any age group depending on the fitness level of the individual. Paraffin treatmentAfter smearing your skin with thermo cream you should apply the heated paraffin, which will harden on your body. This will temporarily hinder the skin respiration promoting the absorption of the cream full of effective substances. The paraffin pack contains alga, which is a fat-dissolving agent with high iodine content. It makes skin spectacularly firm, smooth and velvety. ShiatsuShiatsu is based on the ancient Japanese medicine and philosophy, but it has also been affected by the modern western medicine. It is suitable for preventing diseases, locomotor and mental disorders or just for a pleasant sensual and spiritual journey in the universe of your inner self. According to the Taoist philosophy the energy – prana, qi or chi – flows continuously both in the universe and in human body. The therapist treats the patients on the acupuncture spots along the meridian lines because these spots provide access to the various organs. Step-AerobicStepping on and off a platform may enhance the development of the balance between the energy level of the sigh tensors and flexors. Such balance plays an important role in the prevention of certain sports injuries. In well-organized step training the choreography and the step combinations match the rhythm of the music used for the training. StretchingIt means a set of stretching and relaxing exercises. Painless muscle system of good tone is required for coordinated injury-free motion. While being used, muscles perform repeating motions of a small extent, that’s why they tend to grow stiff soon. These exercises help you loosen your stiff muscles of poor tone. Sole massageIt has been used in Asia for five thousand years and nowadays we can see its revival. It protects and improves your physical and mental health without any side-effects within a short period if time. It helps you prevent diseases and stimulates the self-healing mechanism of the organism. Massaging the sole opens a way to affect the central nervous system, circulation and internal organs as it is extremely rich in nerve endings. In the reflex zones related to the particular organs, crystalline lumps of various sizes may be felt which could often be sensitive or even painful. The aim is to rub off these deposits and detoxify the body, improve blood circulation and stimulate the self-healing capacity. Thai massageAn Indian medical man was the first to use this technique in Thailand 2500 years ago. In the course of time it changed but it has preserved its bases up to this day. The massage is carried out with hand, elbow, sole or knee along the so called meridian lines connecting the acupuncture spots. You can enjoy this massage wearing a comfortable cotton T-shirt and cotton trousers. It has a relaxing effect, reduces tension and pain and affects muscles, interstitial tissues, joints, the autonomic nervous system, organs, blood circulation as well as the lines and spots harmonizing energy. Thalasso therapySince the mid-19th century the thelasso therapy - -derives from the Greek word "Thalassa" = sea – has combines the holistic and the wellness experiences for the body and soul. A French doctor called La Bounnadiére was the first to use the designation in 1867, and since then it has been associated with soothing and regenerating effects of the therapy applying sea water, seaweed and sea climate. YumeihoYumeiho is a kind of massage originated from Japan. It was created by Sajoni Masayuki, who used the elements of martial arts of Chinese Buddhist monasteries. The masseur kneads the body thoroughly, stretches the joints and loosens the blocks to make motion and energy flow free. The treatment combines the techniques of acupressure and the manual therapy with eastern physical exercises.

Methods included in the following physiotherapeutic treatment group are used mostly in Hévíz: electrotherapy magnetic therapy mechanotherapy treatments light therapy Electrotherapy Electrotherapy, balneotherapy and mechanotherapy are part of physiotherapy treatments. Electrotherapy is used in various forms during Hévíz treatments. Therapies may mitigate pain, stimulate blood circulation and generate deep tissue congestion depending on the therapy type. „Low frequency” treatment types are ultrasound, magnetic ring, diadynamic, ionomodulator, sonopuls, stymat, sonodynator, dionin, endomed treatments or cryotherapy, wich is based on the circulation of cold air „High frequency” treatment types: decimetre wave, microwave and short wave. Treatments use the heat effect of electricity for generating tissue congestion. Indications: improves blood circulation, alleviator of pain. Types of treatments During iontotherapy the ions of a medicine prescribed by physician are introduced to the body via the skin with the help of local galvanic current. It may be local and general: relieving muscle- and traumatic pains and arthritis. It is beneficial for migraine and aortic stenosis; it also speeds up the absorption of hematoma and softens up scarring. Diadynamic current therapy is a special electrotherapy, which has an alleviative and circulation boosting effect. Indications: analgesic treatment, vein innervations disorders, twitches, bruises, oedema, nervous pain, joint and spine wear, disc related disorders, muscle wasting. Myotest means electrical treatment of the nerves, by generating muscle contractions. Indications: treatment and prevention of muscular wasting. Interference therapyDue to the different power frequencies conducted into muscles next to the spine the muscle knots caused by posture disorders decrease because of the internal pulsing massage generated by the electric power. Ultrasound therapyTissue micro massage, which is created by mechanical vibrations. It is suitable for healing every musculoskeletal disease. Magnetic therapy Magnetic ring, also known as pulsatron. It is based on the biological effects of the magnetic field’s rhythmic changes. It can be used after a stroke, in case of stiffness, muscle weakness, neuralgia, post-treatments of injuries and in some medical cases. Light therapy Sollux, laser, evolite...all are using the special physical attribution of the light to heal different diseases.  Laser (light laser) is mostly used to cure movement diseases. It decreases pain, sore, muscle tension, edem, and stimulates the immune system, and accelerates wound healing Mechanotherapy treatments It is an independent cure, but it is also an important part of the complex therapy. These are therapeutic forms based on the following types of treatments Passive: massage >>> Active: physical and therapeutic exercise >>> Did you know that, although electricity hadn’t been known yet, the Romans used the electrotherapy? electricity generating fishes were placed next to paralyzed children in the pool in order to stimulate their muscles?

tartalom: + 1 The story of bath Hévíz As historical remembrance proves it, Hévíz was already known in the Roman era. The water was used for everyday activities, namely for the processing of animal skin (softening it with a piece of rod). The healing and miraculous effects of Lake Hévíz were chanted in a legend at that time. The bathing culture of Hévíz and the evolution of the unique medicinal therapies are linked with the name of Count György Festetics, who started bathing constructions on the lake from the year 1795. He established a bathing site beside the lake, which were most popular especially with the local peasantry. The bath and the thermal water later became famous, and people from more distant places visited Hévíz wishing to be cured. More than 200 years later (at the turn of the century), the leasehold rights were seized by the brewery owner Vencel Reischl of Keszthely, who continued the developments. As a result, Hévíz has become a well-known thermal bath throughout Hungary by today. The development of Hévíz was continuous throughout the centuries and it is still going on even today. However, Hévíz was not only known for the healing power of its thermal water, but notable medical doctors of the town further enhanced its fame too. Dr Károly Moll, inventor of the weight bath became famous all around the world. Recent improvements of the bath aimed to increase the quality of the services offered to the patients. During the reconstruction of the thermal lake, the main buildings were renovated, and the function of the buildings was also modified. The changing rooms were removed from the winterized building in the middle of the lake to the entrance in the southern and western part of the complex, thus rendering the construction of a 2,500 square metre bath house in the middle of the lake possible. The most significant attraction of Hévíz is the unique medicinal lake and its healing power. Today however, modernization and the extension of the available services to attract the age group 35-50 cannot be neglected either. During the latest reconstruction of the thermal lake new buildings were constructed on the lakeside, housing pleasure pools, a sauna block, massage clinic, various examination rooms, changing rooms, catering units and even a conference room. Later, the new building was also renovated, which now provides services equivalent to those of a 4-star hotel: in the 3-floor departure building there is a wellness department (sauna, steam bath, ice bath, salt cave, pools), modern guest rooms and a therapy department (hydrotherapy, massage, beauty salons, mud treatment rooms, body culture therapy) waiting for the visitors. A sauna and modern massage rooms were built as part of the reconstruction, and the capacity of the changing rooms and that of the resting area were also extended. Besides the constructions, the park around the thermal lake developed as well where 30 special ornamental trees were planted thanks to a successful tender procedure.Owing to the recent developments, Hévíz can not only preserve but also strengthen its position as one of the most popular centres of national and international thermal water tourism. Thanks to the realized development projects, Hévíz grows more modern, and becomes able to satisfy the divers needs of its frequent visitors and those of the growing number of younger guests with children as well. Look around in our 3D tour! Did you know that people lived around the town even in the Neolithic period, 7500 years ago? "Da Bibere" the Latin inscription on a cup from the first century before Christ found among the archaeological finds means ‘Give me a drink!’? also two Roman altar-stone dedicated to Jupiter were unearthed north of the Lake? castle servants lived around the Lake of Hévíz in the Árpád-age, from the 11th to the 14th century? the name of Hévíz first appeared in a charter dated 28th March 1328?

tartalom: + 1 Proof, not promises– effectiveness of the therapies of Hévíz One million visitors a year, regular customer rate of 80%, thousands of cured people in Hévíz, this is not a coincidence! It has been known for a long time that the water of Lake Hévíz is a remedy for several complaints and many people owe their recovery to the therapies carried out here. The recent researches of Hévíz Spa and St Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases are now also scientifically proven beneficial effects. Several research programmes were carried out in the institute and all of them ended with positive results. The following research was also presented at an international congress and even published in a well-known European specialist magazine: Examination of the medical effects of Lake Hévíz in patients with knee joint degenerations In the course of the research the patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis were divided into two groups. One group bathed in the lake and the other in a pool with heated tap water for 3 weeks, 30 minutes 5 times a week.  The patients did not get any other physiotherapeutic treatments and the doctors carrying out the examinations did not know in which group the patients were. The doctors measuring various parameters before the treatments, after the treatments and 12 weeks after the end of the treatments found that the difference between the two groups were significant. The research has clearly shown that the water of Lake Hévíz reduced the pain of the patients who were suffering from knee joint degenerations, improved their movement functions and thus positively affected the patients’ quality of life both in the short and long term. You can download the article here. After the successful international acceptance preparation of further scientific articles is going on about the following researches: 1. Proving the effectiveness of the weight bath therapy in case of low back pain The aim of the research was to prove the effectiveness of the weight bath, which was introduced by Dr. Moll Károly in 1953, in case of patients suffering from mild or moderate lumbago. In addition to the parameters showing the movements and the indices of the quality of life the authors placed special emphasis on the data measured by the Spineliner device, which has an objective method to measure the stiffness or flexibility of the joints and muscles. The medical examinations carried out directly after the weight bath therapy and then 3 months after the therapy showed improvement in almost every parameter, demonstrated significant improvement in several parameters proving the positive effects of the treatments. 2. Determining the effects of the healing mud of Hévíz in case of patients suffering from hand arthrosis The aim of the research was to examine and document the therapeutic and chemical effects of the healing mud of Hévíz in case of patients suffering from mild and moderate hand osteoarthritis. In the course of the research the patients were divided into two groups: the patients in group one were given medicinal mud directly on both of their hands, whereas the patients of the second group got the healing mud on both of their hands through a layer of nylon for 3 weeks, 5 times a week. Various parameters were tested at the beginning and at the end of the therapy and after 15 weeks. Based on the clinical tests, improvement was observed in patients who received mud treatments. 3. The effect of the complex physiotherapy of Hévíz in case of a specific autoimmune disorder The ongoing research program carried out together with the University of Pécs examines the effects of the complex physiotherapy of Hévíz in case of patients suffering from a specific autoimmune disorder (systemic sclerosis) affecting their hands. The aim of the study is to improve the functions of the hands by the help of a 3-week-long complex physiotherapy as well as to determine the short- and long-term effects. On weekdays the patients were given the following treatments: medicinal bath, whirlpool bath, mud treatments, massage, physiotherapy, ergotherapy. At the weekend they got 30 minutes’ bath, went for a walk and relaxed. In the short term most of the measured parameters have improved and the used treatments have been effective. In the long term the hand function tests have partially shown promising results. The findings of further examinations are expected by autumn 2014. 4. Cardiospa – the experience of the technical testing of the telemetric cardiologic monitoring during balneotherapy in Hévíz The general objective of the project is to provide a partially automated remote medical monitoring for patients who would stand in need of thermal water because of their underlying disease, but cannot take it because of their contraindications of cardiologic nature. The tests were carried out in 51 volunteer patients who do not suffer from heart diseases and it was found that the measuring instrument was able to give appropriate signals during staying in the thermal water and was well tolerated also by the patients. In the next phase of the research it is planned to try the instrument out on patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The above findings motivate the doctors of Hévíz for carrying out further researches, which are hoped to also have positive outcome. Visit Hévíz and try out the proven medicinal therapies of Hévíz!

The basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy

Thermal water with a temperature of 32-34°C is ideal for the body. The water composition of the thermal water of Hévíz has proven anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Uniquely, the depth of the water allows the muscles to relax completely and the joints to perfectly relieve while swimming/floating in the water.

The effectiveness of the Hévíz medicinal lake is the result of a combination of several therapeutic factors

  • the thermal effect of the water
  • its mass and constant flow
  • its gas and radium emanation content
  • hydrostatic pressure
  • bathing in the open air

Bathing in water at 32-34°C is the most optimal temperature for the body, as it is considered an indifferent temperature, which allows the water to effectively exert its chemical and biological properties and its calming effects on the nervous system.
The water rising from the spring cave keeps the water in constant motion and creates a vertical flow giving the bather a light, floating sensation.

The lake water is rich in gaseous substances, it contains hydrogen sulphide, carbonic acid, methane and radium gases. During bathing, gas bubbles adhere to the skin and are absorbed through it exerting their beneficial effects. The gases that escape from the water are then inhaled and enter the body through the lungs. The sulphur and radium emanations that are released promote cell regeneration, the function of certain endocrine glands, the production of immune substances and play an important role in healing.

In Lake Hévíz, unlike in most thermal waters, you bathe standing, in an upright position. This means that the legs, which are submerged deeper, are under more pressure than the upper parts of the body, which is beneficial for blood circulation: the pressure of the water drives blood from the veins in the lower limbs towards the heart.

The "speciality" of Hévíz

Weight bath is an underwater treatment designed to move the vertebrae of the spine away from each other, thus stretching the spinal column. The stretching allows the discs to return to their original healthy state. Weight bath is completely painless as the buoyancy of the water relaxes the body and the weights stretch the spine very gently. During the treatment, the patient "hangs" in the pool suspended by the neck and/or under the arms while weights are placed on the waist and/or ankles, depending on the condition. The weights are usually 2, 3 or 5 kilograms.

In the weight bath, the weights used can be suspended in 3 different ways:

  • one-point suspension (neck only)
  • two-point suspension (underarm support)
  • three-point suspension (neck and underarm support)

Weights can be placed on the patient under medical instructions but not more than 20 kg at a time.
Treatment time: 20 minutes on average
Water temperature: indifferent (34-35 °C)

Indications:

  • relieving pressure on discs and nerve roots
  • easing of muscle spasms
  • reducing ligament and muscle contractions

Contraindications:

  • cardiovascular complaints
  • high temperature, infectious disease
  • acute musculoskeletal disease
  • slipped vertebrae
  • malignant tumour
  • 6 weeks after disc surgery

In each case, the parameters of the weight-bath treatment, the duration, and the weight to be used are determined by the attending physician. Weight baths should only be used on the advice of a specialist. The treatments are carried out with gradual loads according to the parameters. Patients are suspended through the neck or underarm support.

Weight baths are available in the facilities of the Hévíz Spa and the St. Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, such as the Rheumatology Hospital, the Lake Baths and the Festetics Bathhouse, as well as in the hotels offering the Traditional Hévíz Therapy.

Mud wraps for healing

Hévíz mud is mostly peat of vegetable origin, dark grey and soft. It is unique, it has a special medicinal effect because of the radium salts and reduced sulphur compounds it contains. The medicinal water and mud from the tens of thousands of years old Pannonian Sea, together with complex physiotherapy treatments, are suitable for treating all rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders.

The mud is used in the form of mud wraps in the course of therapies. The mud treatment lasts 20 minutes and is applied to a maximum of six body parts at a time. After the treatment, at least half an hour of rest is recommended.

It is recommended for the following diseases:

  • in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal disorders, in the case of abrasion, calcification, and inflammatory diseases
  • in certain orthopaedic cases
  • in some neurological problems
  • for specific internal and gynaecological diseases

In Hévíz, mud baths can only be carried out on medical advice, but the mud pool of Lake Hévíz can be used with due caution.

Try it!

Pampering and health preservation at the master level: the therapeutic masseurs of Hévíz have found out how to combine the beneficial effects of therapeutic massage and medicinal mud in one treatment. This has become the Hévíz mud massage. Its main advantage is that it can be tried without a doctor's consultation. You only need to discuss with the masseur if there are any contraindications.

Try the cosmetic treatment with Hévíz mud

Today there are several types of cosmetic mud available on the beauty market - including one based on the peat mud of Hévíz. The products made from this mud make the skin velvety and soft. They also have a beneficial effect on skin and connective tissue cell renewal, reduce inflammation and the signs of ageing - as the heat dilates the capillaries, the supply of nutrients and oxygen increases and makes the skin more resistant.

The additional elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy

All you need to know about therapeutic massage

The specialists of Hévíz recommend therapeutic massages as one of the main elements of the traditional treatments - in addition to bathing therapy. Therapeutic massage is an important treatment in physiotherapy. A 10-15 minute bath in thermal water is recommended before the massage. It relaxes the soft tissues and makes the massage more effective.

Therapeutic massages include:

  • Swedish massage,
  • reflex zone (segment, connective tissue, periosteal) massage,
  • lymph massage,
  • sports and refreshing massages.

The general effect of massage is to increase blood and lymphatic circulation. Heart rate and blood pressure change, metabolism speeds up, body temperature and breathing changes, excretion increases and thus detoxification. It also has a positive effect on the nervous system.

Massages, including therapeutic massages, have a number of contraindications, so it is always necessary to consult a massage therapist before treatment.

Physiotherapy is an umbrella term that includes movement, electro-, and magnetic therapies.

Electrotherapy

In the course of the treatment two electrodes are used to send a low-voltage current to painful areas, and as a result, a slight tingling sensation is felt. Electrotherapy treatments are specifically designed to speed up healing and are excellent for ligament injuries.
Galvanic electrotherapy is good for pain relief and increases blood flow. Low-frequency treatments include ultrasound, magnetic resonance, diadynamic, ionomodulator, sonopuls, stymat, sonodynator, dionine, endomed, or cryotherapy, which is an excellent treatment for fresh joint injuries using cold air.

There are three types of high-frequency treatments: decimetric wave, microwave, short wave. During the treatment, high-frequency machines use the thermal effect of electricity to produce tissue engorgement.

  • Electrotherapies: iontophoresis treatment, Diadynamic, Myotest, Interference treatment, Ultrasound treatment
  • Magnetotherapy - magnetic ring, also known as pulsatron.
  • Light therapies: Sollux, laser, evolite
  • Mechanotherapy (movement therapy):
Passive: massage, therapeutic massage, andActive: physiotherapy, which can be individual or group therapy

Several of the above can be found in our video library to help you understand what they are used for and why.

Movement therapies are an effective way to achieve rapid improvement in musculoskeletal complaints and spinal problems.

During general movement development, the aim is to stimulate brain functions, increase and refine attention and concentration skills. Also, the movement therapy developments applied in Hévíz, such as physiotherapy, targeted spinal exercise, aim at healing, regeneration and prevention. These methods are particularly important in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is of paramount importance in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, as it can effectively help to improve health conditions caused by a sedentary lifestyle.
During individual and group sessions, patients learn the movements that are important for them from qualified therapists, and can later do them at home. The aim is to restore damaged spines and joints, improve the musculoskeletal condition and correct posture.

Spinal exercise

A method used mainly to increase the range of motion of the spinal column and to mobilise the neck and waist. But successful results can be achieved by stretching muscles shortened due to incorrect posture or pain, strengthening muscles around the back, abdomen, hips, and improving coordination.

Underwater gymnastics

It combines the effects of physiotherapy with the healing and beneficial physical properties of water. The movements performed in the water are less strenuous, so they can also be done by people who find traditional gymnastics exhausting.

In addition to the traditional methods listed above, special methods can also be used to treat back problems:

• Schroth therapy
• Manual therapy
• McKenzie method
• Kinesio tape
• Spineliner treatment

Thermal water, not for external use only

Dr Noémi Gyarmati says the following about the use of Hévíz sulphurous thermal water as a drinking cure: “It can be used successfully to increase intestinal function and stomach acid production, in cases of chronic intestinal inflammation, constipation or haemorrhoids. It relieves gall-bladder diseases and helps the healing of respiratory tract infections. Also, it can be used not as a drinking cure but as a gargle for chronic inflammation of the oral mucosa with good results."

Of course, like all medicinal waters, this one has contraindications too, so the consumption of sulphurous water should be avoided in the case of:

• acute inflammation of the liver and biliary tract,
• and increased thyroid function.

In the town, there are drinking fountains with medicinal water that can be used free of charge:

• In the building of the indoor spa of the Hévíz Spa and St. Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, opposite the entrance to Festetics Square (opening hours: 7.00 - 17.00)

Thermal water can also be consumed at the drinking fountains in hotels where thermal water is used in therapy.
The thermal water of Hévíz cannot be bottled, so fresh water can only be consumed at the drinking fountains.

Treatment with water

The physical properties of water are used in water therapies, and their effects are greatly enhanced by treatment with medicinal water. It mostly reduces the recovery time of people suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.
The temperature of the water - cold or hot - produces further opposite effects. In a hot bath, vasodilation occurs, blood pressure decreases and the heartbeat speeds up. In cold water baths, blood vessels constrict, causing blood pressure to rise, heart rate to fall and coronary arteries to constrict.

Types of treatment

In addition to the mud and weight bath treatments listed in the basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the following methods are also included in hydrotherapy, i.e. water treatments:

  • Carbonic acid bath
  • Electric bath
  • Contrast bath therapy
  • Underwater massage
  • Hydroxeur-tub bath
