tartalom: + 1 Medicinal mud The medicinal mud which thickly covers the lake-bed is also worth mentioning. The unique medicinal mud of Hévíz contains organic and inorganic substances, and reduced sulphides also have special healing effects.
The bed of Lake Hévíz is covered by a 1-7 metre-thick layer of natural, mainly organic medicinal mud, which is dark-grey by colour and soft by texture. The thermal water and medicinal mud were formed in the Pannonic-sea tens of thousands of years ago, and they are suitable for complex physiotherapy treatments, and for the treatment of all kinds of rheumatic and locomotive diseases. The medicinal mud is applied as mud-pack during the treatments. According to the opinion of specialist doctors, a maximum of six body parts can be wrapped in mud at a time. The main effect of medicinal mud is to keep the hands and body parts warm. The duration of the mud treatment is 20 minutes, after which at least a 30 minute period of relaxation is recommended. It is recommended for the following diseases: in case of chronic musculoskeletal diseases, it is indicated for both degenerative, atherosclerotic disease forms and inflammatory diseases in case of certain orthopaedic, neurologic, medical and gynaecological diseases Mud packs can be carried out only on medical advice in Hévíz. Use the Hévíz mud as cosmetics! In addition to the traditional “wrapped” mud packs many cosmetic mud packs are also available these days in the beauty market – even those which were made of the Hévíz mud. The mud formed due to thousands of years of geological and biological processes has high humic acid and organic material content and heat retaining capacity, that is why it has been used in medicine for a long time. However, its cosmetic use is not entirely new. Experiments prove that it also has unique aesthetic effects: empties the excreta, enhances the metabolism of cells, increases the production of collagen, and the minerals inside refill the body. It is excellent for the smoothing of the face, neck and décolleté, and even for body shaping in case of using it as a treatment course. Its regular use enhances the defence mechanism of the immune system. The products made of mud smoothen and soften the skin. They have a beneficial effect on the renewal of the skin and connective tissue cells, reduce inflammation and the signs of aging, because the thermal effects dilate the capillaries, therefore the nutrients- and oxygen supply increases and as a result, the skin becomes more resistant.    These cosmetic products are only made of natural ingredients, their essential minerals, vitamins ensure the balanced functioning of the processes among the cells. Already after the first treatment, you can feel the change on your skin – it will have a silky, youthful, fresh and velvety touch.  Among the products based on mud can be found soaps, mud baths, masks, wraps, creams, facial cleansers, massage creams, body scrubs, balms and body lotions too. You can get more information about the mud products in our webshop or in the Tourinform Office in Hévíz! Feel free to try it!

Doing sports can sometimes cause serious muscle, joint or bone injuries. Sometimes injuries happen during the period of active sports, sometimes problems develop after years of active sports. But you don't have to live with pain.

Although musculoskeletal complaints are similar, athletes require a different type of treatment.

For athletes, the recovery process is more than just pain relief.

It also includes a proper diet, activation of the body, and mental refreshment. For this purpose, the packages offered to sportsmen and sportswomen in Hévíz contain medical treatments, relaxation programmes, active leisure activities and a wide range of menus that can be easily integrated into the diet. For athletes, personalisation is also evident as the treatments should be in line not only with the severity of the problem but also with the athlete's lifestyle, training schedule and competition calendar.

The following hotels have also put together tailor-made offers for athletes.

The St. Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Hévíz provides medicinal treatments in the framework of in-patient or out-patient care.

Water's buoyancy relieves pressure on joints, minerals soothe pain, the suspension helps correct spinal deformities

It is no wonder that swimming is one of the most recommended sports. Bathing in hot thermal water is the best natural treatment for joints. And the suspension is the most effective "medicine" for the spine. There is only one place in the world where these three factors can be combined.

Swimming and being suspended, i.e. floating in a vertical position, in Lake Hévíz can only be experienced in Hévíz. The right water composition, water temperature, water depth and water surface of sufficient size are only given here.

Swimming because it is a type of movement in which gravity has only a small effect on the body, and due to the buoyancy of the water, you can strengthen your muscles and joints without putting them under strain. Swimming, on the other hand, can exercise the entire musculature of the body, but it is also good for the spine because it helps to correct spinal deformities. In addition, thermal water has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, and bathing in hot water has a stress-relieving effect on the whole body. From this point of view, it provides a complex therapeutic experience for the bather.

It has a great advantage: it can be done at any time. Although there are specific cases where it is not recommended, it is the best and most natural treatment for the vast majority of people.

tartalom: + 1 In the course of general movement development, the aim is to stimulate brain functions, increase and refine attention and concentration skills. On the other hand, the goal of the movement development treatments – medical gymnastics and direct spinal exercises- , which are primarily carried out in Hévíz, are healing, recovery and prevention. These methods are especially important in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases.
Physical and therapeutic exercise Exercise with professional supervision or therapeutic exercise is part of a complex treatment. It is an extremely important therapy in the treatment of locomotor disorders. Unhealthy lifestyles, such as lack of physical exercise in many cases further deteriorate the health of the patients, which can be helped by regular physical exercise. Therapeutic exercise: one of the aims of the physical exercise tailored to the condition of the individual is to restore the injured joints and spine operation, to improve the condition and power of the muscle system, to eliminate its defects and to correct the posture of the individual. Spinal exercise It is a method mainly used for increasing the movement range of the spine as well as for mobilising the neck and waist. However, successful results can be achieved with it in stretching muscles that are shortened because of poor posture or pain, strengthening muscles around the back, the abdomen and the hips, or improving coordination. Spinal exercise is carried out in an eased position with the help of qualified physiotherapists in every case. The movements are easy to learn and can be performed later at home as well. Underwater exercise This therapy applies the healing impact of mixed medicinal water and the favourable physical characteristics of water (ascensional power, resistance, etc.). Underwater exercise causes less strain to the muscles and joints, therefore it is also suitable for those, who are not allowed to do normal physical exercise. The impact of all these treatments can be boosted by treatments based on thermal (heat), electric, etc. energies. In addition to the mentioned traditional methods, special techniques can also be used for treating back problems: Schroth therapy Manual therapy McKenzie method Kinezio tape Spineliner treatment

Tárolt adatok:
cím: Hydrotherapy
lead:
tartalom: + 1 Treatment with water In the course of which the physical features of water are used. The effect of the therapy is greatly enhanced by the treatment with medicinal water. It mainly increases the healing of those who suffer from musculoskeletal diseases. Depending on the position of the body, the immersion into the indifferent-temperature water has many positive physiological effects, such as blood „dilution”, decreasing lung breathing capacity, loosening trunk muscles, movement is easier with reduced body weight due to buoyancy, and water resistance also works as muscle toner.
The hydrostatic pressure of the water plays an important role in hydrotherapeutic methods: it has an effect on veins, skin vessels, it reduces the volume of the chest and the abdominal, influences the mechanism of breathing, improves kidney function, and reduces the circumference of the inflamed joints. The temperature of water – hot or cold – results in further changes opposite to each other. Vasodilatation occurs in a hot bath, the blood pressure rises and the heart beat accelerates. In a cold-water bath the blood vessels constrict and as a consequence the blood pressure increases, the heart rhythm decreases and the coronary artery constricts. Hydrotherapeutic treatments, thus treatments carried out with water, include, in addition to the mud and weight bath treatments, which were listed at the basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the following methods: Carbonated bath treatment takes place in a special bath tub. The carbonated water is produced by using the medicinal water of Lake Hévíz. It means a treatment with carbon dioxide “absorbed” by the water, which is suitable for treating patients suffering from heart diseases, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disorders. As a result of the treatment the surface veins expand and blood circulation is restored to normal. It improves the oxygen supply of the cardiac muscle, normalises blood pressure; if applied as a series of treatments the impact is longer-lasting. Indications / counter-indications: Artery and venous circulation disorders High blood pressure, Micro-circulation skin disorders Vegetative nervous system disorders Osteoporosis, chronic locomotive disorders Rehabilitation after heart attack Coronary stenosis, post-treatment of heart surgeries Four-section galvanic bath is also called hydro galvanic bath. Also two-section galvanic bath is often applied. The treatment takes place in plastic tubs filled with medicinal water. Direct current is led to the bath tub. Galvanic bath is recommended for the treatment of the limbs, by the simultaneous application of medicinal water and galvanic current. It is successfully applied primarily for the residual symptoms of previous nerve pains and inflammations, and secondarily for wear (degenerative) disorders. If it is used as a descending treatment it also has a pain alleviative impact. Indications / counter-indications: Alleviation of pain affecting multiple joints and body regions: Rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue rheumatism Limb joint inflammatory and degenerative diseases Neuritis Sudeck atrophia (circulation disorder after limb injuries with local osteoporosis) Aortic stenosis Contrast bath therapyThe difference between cold and warm water is used for therapeutic purposes. Alternating cold and hot water promotes better circulation to the extremities. Underwater jet massageDuring the underwater jet massage the patient is laid in a medical tub filled with Hévíz healing water, where the temperature of the special tub’s healing water and the mechanic impact of the water jet are jointly applied for the massage therapy. Besides the water jet massage impact also the positive effects of the healing water are enjoyed by patients. The therapy is for individual guests only, and it is tailored according to the complaints of the patient. The therapy is also called “tangentor”, which is a therapeutic treatment based on balneotherapy, hydrotherapy and the mechanic impact of the water jet. The treatment is carried out in a special tub, by using a water jet with adjustable jet power, which can target various parts of the body. The water with a temperature of 34-36ºC is supplied from a pipe and it is targeted manually to various parts of the body. The massage stimulates the blood and lymph circulation and by this also stimulates the metabolism, furthermore contributes to the detoxification of the body. Due to the impact on the lymph system it also boosts the immune system. The therapy releases stress and relaxes the muscles. The vibration of the water penetrates the connective tissue, thus helps the renewal of the skin and restoring its plasticity. It has also got an alleviative effect. Indications release muscular tension, locomotor disorders, after injuries and operations, rheological disorders, nervous system disorders. Hydroxeur bathHydroxeur treatment – or Jacuzzi – is used when due to some reason manual massage cannot be applied or we wish to achieve a different impact. In a special tub the artificially generated air bubbles cause turbulent flow, which massages the entire body surface. The water flow gives a nice sensation to the patient, increases blood circulation and has a stimulating effect through the skin. It has weaker, lighter massaging power than the underwater jet massage. There are no counter-indications for the hydroxeur bath; therefore it can be used without physician supervision. Duration of the treatment: approx. 10 to 20 minutes.

tartalom: + 1 The effectiveness of the Thermal lake of Hévíz is the combined effect of several healing factors: temperature of the water large amount and streaming gas-content hydrostatic pressure bathing in open air The most optimal is to bath when the water temperature is between 32-34 °C. This temperature is perceived by human skin as neither cold nor warm, blood vessels shall neither contract, nor expand by its effect, unlike in cold and warm water. This indifferent temperature of the medicinal lake of Hévíz allows that the bathers can stay there for longer periods, without losing or accumulating heat, and this was the chemical and biological traits of the water can exercise their effect for longer periods.
The huge amount of water, always in movement, results in several types of water streams in the lake. The medicinal water bursting up from the source spreads in radial directions in the half-cone shape lake bed, and the water that is cooled down on the surface, descends under the fresher, warmer water vertically, in a cylinder type stream. The water always in movement and the mud particles always in movement exercise higher friction resistance, higher ascensional power of the water bursting up from the deep floating is made easier, so staying in the water requires less physical force than in the case of stagnant water. The gases present in the lake water – sulphur-hydrogen, carbonic acid - exercise a physical and chemical effect. The mechanical effect of the gas bulls getting attached to the skin has a favourable impact on the functioning of the whole nervous system.  By penetrating through the skin, the gases also have a direct chemical effect, on the other hand, gases that evaporate from the water by mixing with the air above the water, get into the body through inhalation, through the lungs.  Sulphur discharged from the water and from the puddled mud exercise intensive biological effect on various life-functions. The hydrostatic pressure resulting from the weight of the bathing water has a significance, as due to the water depth, people bathe in the lake in a vertical body position, so water exercises higher pressure on the deeply immersed feet, than on the thorax that is situated higher. This is good for blood circulation, as the pressure of the water presses the body fluids from varicose veins and lymphatic vessels of the lower limbs, pushes them into the blood circulation and into the heart. Curious for the water content? Read it!

tartalom: + 1 Weight bath Weight bath is an underwater treatment, which aims to lenghten the vertebrae from one another, thus stretching the spinal column. The stretching process renders the restoration of the original and healthy condition of the discs possible. Weight bath is a painless treatment as the elevating power of water brings the body in a relaxed state, and the weights stretch the spinal column in a most indulgent way. During the treatment, the guests are anchored on the neck and/or under the arms, practically hanging in the water while different weights of 2, 3 or 5 kilograms – depending on the state of the disease – are fixed on the back and/or the ankles.
Weights applied in the weight bath may be attached to the body in 3 different ways: one point (neck only) 2-points (under the arms) 3-points (neck and under the arms) The weight must be fixed to the patient’s body as instructed by the medical doctor, with a maximum of 20 kilograms at a time.Duration of treatment: 20 minutesWater temperature: indifferent (34-35°C) Indications: relieving spinal discs and nerve roots under pressure decreasing muscle cramps reducing taenia and muscle atrophy Contraindications: Cardiovascular diseases high temperature, infectious diseases acute musculoskeletal diseases vertebral slippage malignancy after disc surgery for 6 weeks Where did the weight-bath start from? It is likely that the diseases of the spine had been attempted to cure by pulling even before the times of Hippocrates. It was dr. Moll Károly who pioneered the use of the underwater pulling weight-bath. He published his essay on it in 1953. The head physician’s idea to use pulling during bathing in the lake came from the various ‘reconditioning’ methods. The weight-bath does not only mean the stretching of the spine, but it is a hydrotherapy as well. In the hot medicinal water the efficiency of the treatment is significantly increased. This treatment is one of the Hungarian rheumatology’s greatest discoveries of practical importance. Are you interested in the work of the weight-bath in practice? The parameters of a weight-bath treatment, the time, the applied weight, are always determined by the physician. The weight-bath can only be available on medical advice. The treatments are carried out by gradual loading according to the parameters. The patients hang on a neck or armpit support. In case of a cervical treatment the patient hangs on cervical stocks, the tension is given by the weight of the body reduced by the buoyancy of the water. If the lower spinal segments are treated, weights from 3 even to 10 kilos are used. The treatments of the knee and hip are carried out with an armpit support by putting weight on the ankles. The duration of the treatments is from 10 to 20 minutes on the average.

Anti-agingIt comprises treatments which help you remain fit and young, including stress relief, exercise therapy, beautician techniques, change of eating habits, vitalizing substances, brain training, change of lifestyle, and many others. AquarobicIt is gymnastics performed in water and accompanied with instructions and mostly with music, which is protective to joints but it is also featured of training and massage as it requires force against the water pressure. Aroma light-therapyIt is not the scent what is primarily used in aroma-therapy treatments but the volatile oil extracted out of plants. Volatile oils have certain components that get locally active within the body and perform only a secondary effect through smelling. With lighting during the light therapy colored light penetrates deep into the skin so that to stimulate the positive reactions of the cells to everyday complaints and mental disorders. AyurvedaThe Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine and philosophy at the same time, which aims at the individual instead of the treatment of disease or symptoms by consideration and comparison of the individual habitus, climate, the seasons of the year and parts of the day, lifestyle, diet and many other aspects. BalneotherapyThis is a kind of treatment with medicinal water or so-called thermal mineral water not classified as medicinal water yet. It comprises drinking cure with such waters, inhalation, mud treatment, carbonated baths, and medicinal baths. CaldariumThis is one of the facilities used in Roman baths, which means hot water bathroom. The caldarium, usually tiled or covered with marble, in which people usually stay for 30 to 40 minutes, poses less burden on human organism than a sauna due to the lower temperatures (40-50 °C) and the humidity of the air (70-100%). FangoMud pack from ground volcanic rock is applied to a certain part or the whole of the body. Fango is capable of holding heat for a long period, rich in minerals and free of organic substances. It has been used for the treatment of rheumatism for centuries, and it is also used for beautician purposes. JacuzziThe water-jets directed to the particular points of the body and the massage promotes full relaxation. Due to the intensified blood circulation your body will get more oxygen so you’ll feel fit. The pores of skin get larger and due to the intensified blood circulation, your skin will be purified from toxins. As a result, the skin will be firmer and more elastic. JoggingJogging combines all the benefits of walking; it conditions the heart, improves muscle tone and strength, relieves stress, and can help with a variety of health problems, such as osteoporosis, heart disease and arthritis. Chinese massageThe Chinese massage may be considered as a kind of acupuncture combined with stretching. The massage may consist of various parts. It may refer to the spine massage and the Chinese head massage aiming at the head and neck. During the massage, the acupuncture points are treated as well. The Chinese massage also includes the stretching of muscles or joints. Cleopatra-bath Cleopatra, the Egyptian Queen did her best to fight ageism; she tried to make her skin soft and healthy by having a bath with donkey milk in it. The beauty care products named after her suggest having a bath with a mixture of milk and vegetable oil. These products are based on the conditioning and nourishing effects that milk and vegetable oils have on the skin. Kneipp stepsYou tread cold water stepping on pebbles placed on the bottom of a tub while walking around. The legs are lifted out of the tub at every step so that the cold water and the warm air will provide the contrasting bath character. The pebbles gently massage the reflex zones of the soles initiating a certain regulatory process. LaconiumIt is a cool version of the Finnish sauna. The temperature may not exceed 55 C° and the degree of humidity is insignificant. It enhances congestion and supports the immune system. Lomi Lomi NuiThis traditional Polynesian massage is one of the most pampering therapies of the Hawaiian kahunas. The massage starts by rubbing the body with “ti” leaves, and the body is heated with hot stones. Then while the lomi-lomi masseur is dancing with traditional dance-steps, imitating the steps of a frigate bird, around the nearly naked body of the patient, lying on the massage bench, he is giving the treatment, which means soft smoothing and kneading motions of the pad of his/her forearm and palm. Finally, he/she completes the massage with a ritual ablution of the body. Lymphatic massageThis is a special kind of massage that makes lymph fluid drain away. The lymph flow may be stimulated along the lymph vessel by smoothing with gentle pressure, thus the tissues may be purified from the roughage. As a result, the skin becomes cleaner, better supplied with blood and firmer. This massage activates the immune system, promotes the recovery of the cells and tissues and reduces the susceptibility to inflammation. It is highly recommended as an additional treatment to detox cures. Qi-GongIt is a generic term to mean a wide range of heath-preserving practices. This ancient method combines the mental concentration, breathing technique and physical exercise so as to enhance and maintain your vital energy. The technique requires regular practice but it is easy to acquire for any age group depending on the fitness level of the individual. Paraffin treatmentAfter smearing your skin with thermo cream you should apply the heated paraffin, which will harden on your body. This will temporarily hinder the skin respiration promoting the absorption of the cream full of effective substances. The paraffin pack contains alga, which is a fat-dissolving agent with high iodine content. It makes skin spectacularly firm, smooth and velvety. ShiatsuShiatsu is based on the ancient Japanese medicine and philosophy, but it has also been affected by the modern western medicine. It is suitable for preventing diseases, locomotor and mental disorders or just for a pleasant sensual and spiritual journey in the universe of your inner self. According to the Taoist philosophy the energy – prana, qi or chi – flows continuously both in the universe and in human body. The therapist treats the patients on the acupuncture spots along the meridian lines because these spots provide access to the various organs. Step-AerobicStepping on and off a platform may enhance the development of the balance between the energy level of the sigh tensors and flexors. Such balance plays an important role in the prevention of certain sports injuries. In well-organized step training the choreography and the step combinations match the rhythm of the music used for the training. StretchingIt means a set of stretching and relaxing exercises. Painless muscle system of good tone is required for coordinated injury-free motion. While being used, muscles perform repeating motions of a small extent, that’s why they tend to grow stiff soon. These exercises help you loosen your stiff muscles of poor tone. Sole massageIt has been used in Asia for five thousand years and nowadays we can see its revival. It protects and improves your physical and mental health without any side-effects within a short period if time. It helps you prevent diseases and stimulates the self-healing mechanism of the organism. Massaging the sole opens a way to affect the central nervous system, circulation and internal organs as it is extremely rich in nerve endings. In the reflex zones related to the particular organs, crystalline lumps of various sizes may be felt which could often be sensitive or even painful. The aim is to rub off these deposits and detoxify the body, improve blood circulation and stimulate the self-healing capacity. Thai massageAn Indian medical man was the first to use this technique in Thailand 2500 years ago. In the course of time it changed but it has preserved its bases up to this day. The massage is carried out with hand, elbow, sole or knee along the so called meridian lines connecting the acupuncture spots. You can enjoy this massage wearing a comfortable cotton T-shirt and cotton trousers. It has a relaxing effect, reduces tension and pain and affects muscles, interstitial tissues, joints, the autonomic nervous system, organs, blood circulation as well as the lines and spots harmonizing energy. Thalasso therapySince the mid-19th century the thelasso therapy - -derives from the Greek word "Thalassa" = sea – has combines the holistic and the wellness experiences for the body and soul. A French doctor called La Bounnadiére was the first to use the designation in 1867, and since then it has been associated with soothing and regenerating effects of the therapy applying sea water, seaweed and sea climate. YumeihoYumeiho is a kind of massage originated from Japan. It was created by Sajoni Masayuki, who used the elements of martial arts of Chinese Buddhist monasteries. The masseur kneads the body thoroughly, stretches the joints and loosens the blocks to make motion and energy flow free. The treatment combines the techniques of acupressure and the manual therapy with eastern physical exercises.

tartalom: + 1   Tomb of the Roman soldier The tomb of the Roman soldier, or the late Roman brick-tomb is located in the Egregy part of Heviz. The tomb was made out of bricks with quicklime. It has been discovered in 1925 when doing earthworks and it was fully intact. The objects found in the tomb were from the era of the Roman imperator Constantinus II. Bronze belt decoration, cloth clamps, knife made of iron, coins of the imperator and of course the skeleton of a Roman soldier were found. The findings were placed in the Balaton Museum located in Keszthely, and the skeleton was left on its place. In 1931 the ruins of a Roman cottage of the early Augustan age were discovered a few hundred meters to the East of the tomb, in the neighbourhood of the Villa Rustica excavated between 2001 and 2004. The house was built at the end of the 1st century. The findigs suggest that the building must have been richly decorated and it was still in use in the 4th century. When digging in the backyard of one of the houses of Egregyi Street a brick burning kiln was found. The items discovered in the neighbouring area testify that man of means have been staying here long time ago. For example on the way to the church to the Arpadian age there was a clay pot found, and there were 276 pieces of Roman coins from the 4th century in it. Look around in our 3D tour! Roman ruin garden Even the ancient Romans discovered and used the lake of Hévíz. This is shown by the roman ruin garden located at the end of Attila Street, which was completely renovated in 2011. The remains of the roman villa from the early Imperial times were discovered in 1931 and then the building of Villa Rustica was excavated between 2001 and 2003 in its vicinity. The house was built at the end of the 1st century. According to the findings it must have been a richly decorated building and it was used even in the 4th century. At the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries a large stone building was erected in its place which was 45 meters long and almost 23 meters wide, therefore more than 1000 square meters. The building had a porticus (columned porch) on the eastern side and some pools with warm, lukewarm and cold water. But it is not certain whether the building was the residential building (villa urbana) of the villa-farm, since there was no evidence of central heating. The building is believed to have been ruined towards the end of the 2nd century, but in the 3rd century it was rebuilt with other interior design. Even a Mithras shrine was built in. The foundation stone of the altar was discovered during the excavation. The shrine and the building were destroyed in the 4th century, but soon it was rebuilt. At the beginning of the 5th century it was ruined completely. The function of the building is uncertain also in this period. Probably it was used for some kind of economic activity. Look around in our 3D tour! Flavius wish ribbons at the ruins of Villa Rustica Hundreds of wishes written on ribbons make the Roman ruin garden, located at the Museum of Egregy at the end of Attila Street, decorated. Placing colourful ribbons revive a Roman legend.    The most well-known Hévíz legend about the formation of the lake and its miraculous effect is linked to the Roman Emperor Flavius Theodosius. According to the legend, Flavius suffered from infantile paralysis. Every day, his Christian nurse prayed to Virgin Mary asking for the boy’s recovery. Virgin Mary answered her prayers and brought forth water. A whole lake was formed from the thermal spring. The nurse bathed the ill child in the water of the lake regularly. Miraculously, Flavius got over his illness by the help of the water and became a strong, healthy ruler, the emperor of the Roman Empire. Out of gratitude, he declared Christianity the official religion throughout the realm in 391. The legendary curative lake is none other than Lake Hévíz, in the water of which thousands of patients have been healed and have regained the pleasure of healthy movement since then.   Local collections In Hévíz you can find recreation facilities not only for your body but for your mental condition as well. In the course of a nice afternoon walk it is worth visiting the Hévíz Museum Collection, which can find above the Fontana Cinema in the walking street. The permanent exhibition allows visitors to get insight into the 210-year past of Hévíz in the room of the local history. Visitors can also see the memorial room named after dr. Károly Moll, which was set up in commemoration of the famous doctors from Hévíz. In the Museum there are also some temporary exhibitions to be visited apart from the permanent one. The Museum’s permanent exhibitions are “History of Hévíz”, “Memories from Hévíz Spa”, ”Medical History Memorial Room for Senior dr. Károly Moll” and “Exhibitions of artist József Simon”. The outside front of the building is decorated with the work named “Spring” by Munkácsy Prize awarded ceramic artist János Németh. The Museum is open for visitors between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. There are no admission fees. If you come to Héviz for a fairly long time and you also consider cultural programs important during a medicinal cure, the Zsigmond Móricz Town Library might be interesting for you; you can borrow books both in Hungarian and foreign languages there. Beside the Museum you can also find temporary exhibitions on several other spots of the town, for instance, in the Gallery of the Fine Arts of the Aquamarine Hotel there are exhibitions regularly, where tourists can meet artists in person at the opening of the exhibitions or in the Show Room of the Magyar Csárda Restaurant being in service for more than 15 years, and major hotels also organize exhibitions of fine arts on temporary basis. The exhibitions may be visited free of charge. And once the Fontana Motion Picture Theatre has been mentioned, we recommend the cinema as an entertaining evening program for young visitors. Having a cinema is quite unusual in the area, as there is no cinema even in Keszthely. The cinema has a seating capacity of 104 persons. Recently new digital technology equipment has been installed; as a result, both the video and the sound technique meet the most modern requirements. However, we should warn visitors not to expect the standard of multiplex cinemas but they should imagine a nice cinema typical of small towns. Have fun and enjoy mental recreation. tartalom: + 1 The parts of the Hévíz Bath nowadays Entrance of the Lake with the cherub statues on the dr. Schulhof Vilmos Promenade. Central Building with 4 indoor pools and rooms and terraces for relaxing. Easily accessible from the direction of Festetics Spa on a floating corridor which was built on the Lake on poles. Festetics Spa, the southern entrance of the Lake which is accessible from Ady E. street. This is the newest building of the Lake where the wellness services are available. Mud pools which are located in the Lake just between the Central Building and Festetics Spa. The entrance from Deák Square also known as the Summer Entrance because it is only open seasonally. The summer dressing room, which stands on the eastern shore of the Lake. It is a building made of wood which is located next to the sunbathing terraces. The „Medve” sunbathing terrace is a separated sunbathing terrace on the southern east part of the Lake.   Dr. Schulhof Vilmos Promenade The Promenade is part of the park, located around the thermal lake. The Dr. Schulhof Vilmos Promenade is starting from the “Indoor bath” („télifürdő”) building, located at the end of the pedestrian zone and it leads to the main entrance of the thermal lake. Hévíz Lake is situated on one side of the Promenade, which is shaded by sycamore trees and bordered by benches, while on the other side we can find the historical buildings of Szent András Reumakórház (Saint Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases). These buildings were built in the 1870s and they were transformed into the current two-storey structures in the beginning of the 1900s. Each house got its own history.
The Art Nouveau style building is located at the northern part of the „Újtelep”, an area established by the Festetics Family. It was named after György Festetics, founder of the town of spas. Currently the György House is accommodating the “A” Building of Szent András Reumakórház (Saint Andrew Rheumatologic Hospital).
It was named after Ferenc Rákóczi the Second, as the building was built in 1863 and the ashes of Ferenc Rákóczi were brought back from Turkey to Hungary in the same year. Currently the Rákóczi House is accommodating the “B” Building of Szent András Reumakórház (Saint Andrew Rheumatologic Hospital).
The building was named after Ella Karola, who was the daughter of Tasziló Festetics. Currently it is accommodating the “C” building of Szent András Reumakórház (Saint Andrew Rheumatologic Hospital).
If we carry on towards south, the next building is a restaurant and assembly hall. The border of the Festetics Estate stretched to this building; this was the first house built from stone. It was built at the end of the 1860s for accommodating guests of the thermal bath. An additional storey was added to the building in 1909, and it became a “Cure Saloon” („Kúrszalon”), which at the time was necessary at bathing resorts. Currently the assembly hall of Szent András Reumakórház (Saint Andrew Rheumatologic Hospital) can be found here.
Francis Joseph – the King of Hungary and Austrian Emperor- made Festetics (II.) Tasziló into prince in the year of the building’s handover, who was the builder of the building. Therefore the choice of name for the building. Currently the Francis Joseph House is accommodating the “D” Building of Szent András Reumakórház (Saint Andrew Rheumatologic Hospital).
The building was built based on the plans of Ferenc Lonkay, the manorial architect of the Festetics Family in 1870-71. The house was part of the “Újtelep”, where the houses were serial numbered. Therefore the choice of name for the building. Currently a hotel is operated in the building under the management of Hévíz Medicinal Spa and Saint Andrew Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases.
The original name of the building was Tasziló villa, but after the death of Prince Festetics (II.) Tasziló it was renamed to Deák House after Ferenc Deák.
The history of the Hévíz Bath Spa Hévíz between 1795 and 1905 The first rectangular bathhouse, consisting of two buildings, was built in 1795 by the landowner Count I. Festetics György. The news on the benefits of the medicinal water reached Vienna in 1801, and the presence of the white water lilies in the lake was already mentioned in a memoir in 1818. Additional Indian species were planted to these water lilies in 1898.  In 1858, afforestation around the lake, modernisation of the spa buildings and development of the lakeside buildings for guests started. In the centre of the lake, the male and female mirror baths (baths surrounded with cabins) were located, but many people still used the sluice of Hévíz, which was wider that time, for swimming. Spa Hévíz in the 1910s and 1920s From 1905, leaseholder Reichl Vencel did his best to develop Hévíz into an international spa town.  The former bathhouse was replaced by a domed building, and it is also due to him that a number of modern accommodation and restaurants, and the „Cure Salon”, essential to the health resort, were built. In 1907, on the site of the old built bridge, a roofed bridge was erected and the characteristic two-towered main entrance was completed. In the same year, the Sanatorium and Spa Hotel of Hévíz was built. In 1911, the town received the „spa resort-like settlement” title. Spa Hévíz in the 1930s After 1926 development started up again. The characteristic lakeside bathhouse was built, as well as the main building received a glass roof in 1932 and thus it became completely covered. In 1930, there was already 7 hotels, 11 restaurants and 40 villas in the village. Varied cultural life awaited the almost 16 thousand guests who came her annually.  In these years of happy peace time Dr Schulhof Vilmos was the chief physician in Hévíz. He did a lot through his work to popularise the therapeutics of Hévíz. Today, the promenade beside the lake is named after him. Buildings of Hévíz before 1945 Contemporaneously with the completion of the first bathhouse (1795), the „cupping house” used for healing (venesection=scarification) was erected. Whereas the surrounding area of the lake was merely a reedy, marshy area in the first half of the 19th century, from the 1850s a beautiful choice of hotel buildings was built on purpose. In 1870, the Houses I to VII, out of which the House No. Seven was the only two-story building,  were already completed. A Roman Catholic chapel was also built (it was demolished later), then in the beginning of the 1900s the hotels, bazaar buildings, as well as the „Cure Salon”, where balls and concerts were held,  were finished.  Spa Hévíz in the 1950s and 1960s In 1948, the thermal lake and all related buildings and parks, which were owned by the Festetics Family up to that time, were nationalised and the period of state-subsidised holidays began. In 1952, the National Spa Hospital of Hévíz was established and later this year Hévíz was declared a health resort of national importance. By 1968, the country's most modern spa building fully equipped with balneo-therapeutic medical devices. Dr Moll Károly, the internationally renowned rheumatologist physician, who invented the weight bath, started his work during this period.   Spa Hévíz in the 1970s and 1980s In the 1970s tourism increased to such an extent – thanks to the western guests too – that the building of additional quality hotels and the rebuilding of the thermal lake buildings were needed. The former domed buildings were replaced by larch-covered, towered buildings from 1977 continuously. The total renovation was completed by 1985, but the visitors could not enjoy the new facility for a long time since it was completely destroyed as a result of a fire on 3rd March 1986. Finally, the new buildings were finished in 1989. Traditional Hévíz Therapy People could read about the beneficial effects of Hévíz medicinal water in 1780 for the first time. Initially, in addition to bathing, only bloodletting was applied as a therapy, the sanatorium was built in 1907 in the village.  The first famous doctor of the village was Schulhof Vilmos, who already used electrotherapy and x-rays, in addition to bathing, in the musculoskeletal rehabilitation. From the 1950s the work of Dr Moll Károly put new life into the Hévíz therapy, the country's most modernly equipped balneo-therapeutic bathhouse was completed in the village in 1968.  Since then, services have increased with a wide spectrum of treatments, but the basis of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy is still the following: bathing in medicinal water, medicinal mud wrap or mud bath and weight bath by Moll Károly. These can be individually supplemented by drinking cure, medicinal massage, movement-, physio- or hydrotherapy.    Kind memories of Hévíz During the last 220 years, the spa resort attracted a number of visitors, who could be celebrities or less famous people, or in exceptional cases even animals, who became famous. Whereas it was quite natural that animals were driven into the water in the 1800s, in 1914, it caused a great sensation when Nelly, the sore-legged elephant was moved to Hévíz. Bathing in muddy medicinal water twice a day was prescribed to the former circus elephant and she performed it with great enthusiasm. The 3-year-old elephant was so popular that she became an extra tourist attraction to the town and the visitors surprised her with basketful of goodies, such as fresh cherries, every day.

The flora and fauna of the lake is unique due to the temperature and chemical composition of the water. Some species of the Hungarian flora and fauna can only be found here. Water lilies in the lake We may say it with good reason that the most unique plants of Lake Hévíz are the water lilies. The English physician and traveller Richard Bright also commemorated these special flowers in his book from 1815. White water lilies are autochthonous in the lake – although they have almost vanished, but a lot of them can be found in the sluice. In the end of the 1800s several attempts were made to plant various types of water lilies, of which the acclimatization of the Indian red water lily was successfully accomplished. The Indian red water lily was acclimatized in 1898 by Lovassy Sándor, a lecturer of the Academy of Economics in Keszthely.Since then the flower has become a real symbol of the town. Did you know that the home of the red water lily is actually the tropical Bengal, Eastern India? a stem develops even 10 to 20 leaves during a summer? the flowers open late at night and only close the next morning? blooming lasts from June to late November? the flowers are not only aesthetically important, but also play a significant role in decreasing the cooling of the water? the stolons trailing all over the bottom protect the medicinal mud? Little animals In addition to the flora, the fauna of the lake is also very diverse. Small unicellular organisms and vertebrates live here too. They do not disturb bathers, because only those will become aware of their existence who persistently search for them. The lake and its environment make home for plankton-crabs, water-snails, fish, dragonflies, leaf- and rose beetles, and even many species of butterflies. Did you know that 66 kinds of snail live in and around the lake? common carp and tench are autochtonous species of fish? However, you can also meet the mosquitofish, the Prussian carp or the pumpkinseed sunfish. in addition to the edible frog, also the marsh frog and the European fire-bellied toad live here? the European pond turtle, the smooth newt and some grass snakes come sometimes into view in the sedge marsh? the surroundings of the sluice are swarmed by wild ducks in the autumn and spring? The mute swans, black-headed gulls and Eurasian coot can find shelter here in the winter. tourists sometimes can see water shrew, common shrew or European mole? Protection forest, park Everybody takes delight in the colourful sight of water-lilies covering the surface of the lake. The red Indian water-lily was brought to Hungary in 1898 by Sándor Lovassy, the teacher of the Academy of Economy in Keszthely. These days the indigenous white water-lily of the Lake occurs mostly in the drainage canal due to the purification. The strictly protected plants are in bloom from the beginning of summer to the end of November. Water-lilies are significant for two reasons; in one hand, their leaves slow down the evaporation of the lake and on the other hand their runners all around at the bottom of the Lake protect the medicinal mud. The Berki Study Trail still unknown by most people, however, there are several sights worth visiting in the course of a walking tour. The Trail covers the Lake of Hévíz and the surrounding moor as well as its flora and fauna which is unique not only in Hungary but in Europe as well. Under the microscope... Typical plants of the heat spring are blue-green algae, whose certain species are able to live in high temperature because of the special composition of their proteins. Thiobacteria are also typical inhabitants of the lake, they are able to store the sulphur excreted from the water in their cells. Different strains of bacteria living in the lake make the water of the lake antiseptic. Also one of the special species of micromonospora lives in the lake, which is called ‘micromonospora heviziensis’ after its residence – since it has not been known before. It is a powerful protein- and cellulose decomposer, therefore it is an important organism of the underwater soil of the lake. The actinomycetes species also discovered in Hévíz is said to be special as well: it can only be found here in Central Europe. It accumulates iodine crystals in its cells and in their environment.

The Indoor Bath can be visited with separate tickets. Healing and health promotion in Hévíz In Hévíz you can find almost all the elements of natural healing and health promotion, which interlock with one another as tiny particles, thus forming an integrated whole. This integrated whole can shortly be called health. The elements have a healing effect in themselves, but their joint presence increases their efficiency in the course of healing, rehabilitation and health promotion. If it is Hévíz, the most important healing element is bathing in the thermal lake. The gentle and smothering touch of the water, the feeling of floating, the swinging lotus flowers, the odour of the healing water and the green leafy crown of the surrounding trees all have a calming effect on the nervous system and evoke the psychological feeling of healing. To experience when water drops as tiny little balls give a gentle massage to the body is unique throughout the whole world. The medicinal lake of Hévíz not only provides the feeling of bathing but also means the basis of traditional medical treatments and healing wellness treatments. Thus, bath treatment means the basis of the healing effects of Lake Hévíz, but it is also important to emphasise such unique medical treatments as mud-pack, the famous weight bath, different types of medical massage and drinking cure. Besides healing, Hévíz naturally provides other facilities as well to preserve the active physical condition of the body, strengthen mental fitness, and find peace and soul harmony (even if for a few days…). Active sports programs such as Nordic walking, bike tours, walks in the town, or near the outlet besides the lake or trips to the wine cellars all strengthen the body and the soul. Some find the right healing powder in the treatments and activities above while others might prefer spending a couple or even more days in a marvellous environment, doing nothing else but enjoying their holiday and the unique atmosphere of the little town, tasting the delicious specialities that are characteristic of the Zala region, and enjoying the flavour of the wines of Hévíz in the company of friends, all of which evoke an unforgettable experience. As we all know: delicious food and a glass of nice wine are as important elements of life as health itself!

tartalom: + 1 The story of bath Hévíz As historical remembrance proves it, Hévíz was already known in the Roman era. The water was used for everyday activities, namely for the processing of animal skin (softening it with a piece of rod). The healing and miraculous effects of Lake Hévíz were chanted in a legend at that time. The bathing culture of Hévíz and the evolution of the unique medicinal therapies are linked with the name of Count György Festetics, who started bathing constructions on the lake from the year 1795. He established a bathing site beside the lake, which were most popular especially with the local peasantry. The bath and the thermal water later became famous, and people from more distant places visited Hévíz wishing to be cured. More than 200 years later (at the turn of the century), the leasehold rights were seized by the brewery owner Vencel Reischl of Keszthely, who continued the developments. As a result, Hévíz has become a well-known thermal bath throughout Hungary by today. The development of Hévíz was continuous throughout the centuries and it is still going on even today. However, Hévíz was not only known for the healing power of its thermal water, but notable medical doctors of the town further enhanced its fame too. Dr Károly Moll, inventor of the weight bath became famous all around the world. Recent improvements of the bath aimed to increase the quality of the services offered to the patients. During the reconstruction of the thermal lake, the main buildings were renovated, and the function of the buildings was also modified. The changing rooms were removed from the winterized building in the middle of the lake to the entrance in the southern and western part of the complex, thus rendering the construction of a 2,500 square metre bath house in the middle of the lake possible. The most significant attraction of Hévíz is the unique medicinal lake and its healing power. Today however, modernization and the extension of the available services to attract the age group 35-50 cannot be neglected either. During the latest reconstruction of the thermal lake new buildings were constructed on the lakeside, housing pleasure pools, a sauna block, massage clinic, various examination rooms, changing rooms, catering units and even a conference room. Later, the new building was also renovated, which now provides services equivalent to those of a 4-star hotel: in the 3-floor departure building there is a wellness department (sauna, steam bath, ice bath, salt cave, pools), modern guest rooms and a therapy department (hydrotherapy, massage, beauty salons, mud treatment rooms, body culture therapy) waiting for the visitors. A sauna and modern massage rooms were built as part of the reconstruction, and the capacity of the changing rooms and that of the resting area were also extended. Besides the constructions, the park around the thermal lake developed as well where 30 special ornamental trees were planted thanks to a successful tender procedure.Owing to the recent developments, Hévíz can not only preserve but also strengthen its position as one of the most popular centres of national and international thermal water tourism. Thanks to the realized development projects, Hévíz grows more modern, and becomes able to satisfy the divers needs of its frequent visitors and those of the growing number of younger guests with children as well. Look around in our 3D tour! Did you know that people lived around the town even in the Neolithic period, 7500 years ago? "Da Bibere" the Latin inscription on a cup from the first century before Christ found among the archaeological finds means ‘Give me a drink!’? also two Roman altar-stone dedicated to Jupiter were unearthed north of the Lake? castle servants lived around the Lake of Hévíz in the Árpád-age, from the 11th to the 14th century? the name of Hévíz first appeared in a charter dated 28th March 1328?

tartalom: + 1 Proof, not promises– effectiveness of the therapies of Hévíz One million visitors a year, regular customer rate of 80%, thousands of cured people in Hévíz, this is not a coincidence! It has been known for a long time that the water of Lake Hévíz is a remedy for several complaints and many people owe their recovery to the therapies carried out here. The recent researches of Hévíz Spa and St Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases are now also scientifically proven beneficial effects. Several research programmes were carried out in the institute and all of them ended with positive results. The following research was also presented at an international congress and even published in a well-known European specialist magazine: Examination of the medical effects of Lake Hévíz in patients with knee joint degenerations In the course of the research the patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis were divided into two groups. One group bathed in the lake and the other in a pool with heated tap water for 3 weeks, 30 minutes 5 times a week.  The patients did not get any other physiotherapeutic treatments and the doctors carrying out the examinations did not know in which group the patients were. The doctors measuring various parameters before the treatments, after the treatments and 12 weeks after the end of the treatments found that the difference between the two groups were significant. The research has clearly shown that the water of Lake Hévíz reduced the pain of the patients who were suffering from knee joint degenerations, improved their movement functions and thus positively affected the patients’ quality of life both in the short and long term. You can download the article here. After the successful international acceptance preparation of further scientific articles is going on about the following researches: 1. Proving the effectiveness of the weight bath therapy in case of low back pain The aim of the research was to prove the effectiveness of the weight bath, which was introduced by Dr. Moll Károly in 1953, in case of patients suffering from mild or moderate lumbago. In addition to the parameters showing the movements and the indices of the quality of life the authors placed special emphasis on the data measured by the Spineliner device, which has an objective method to measure the stiffness or flexibility of the joints and muscles. The medical examinations carried out directly after the weight bath therapy and then 3 months after the therapy showed improvement in almost every parameter, demonstrated significant improvement in several parameters proving the positive effects of the treatments. 2. Determining the effects of the healing mud of Hévíz in case of patients suffering from hand arthrosis The aim of the research was to examine and document the therapeutic and chemical effects of the healing mud of Hévíz in case of patients suffering from mild and moderate hand osteoarthritis. In the course of the research the patients were divided into two groups: the patients in group one were given medicinal mud directly on both of their hands, whereas the patients of the second group got the healing mud on both of their hands through a layer of nylon for 3 weeks, 5 times a week. Various parameters were tested at the beginning and at the end of the therapy and after 15 weeks. Based on the clinical tests, improvement was observed in patients who received mud treatments. 3. The effect of the complex physiotherapy of Hévíz in case of a specific autoimmune disorder The ongoing research program carried out together with the University of Pécs examines the effects of the complex physiotherapy of Hévíz in case of patients suffering from a specific autoimmune disorder (systemic sclerosis) affecting their hands. The aim of the study is to improve the functions of the hands by the help of a 3-week-long complex physiotherapy as well as to determine the short- and long-term effects. On weekdays the patients were given the following treatments: medicinal bath, whirlpool bath, mud treatments, massage, physiotherapy, ergotherapy. At the weekend they got 30 minutes’ bath, went for a walk and relaxed. In the short term most of the measured parameters have improved and the used treatments have been effective. In the long term the hand function tests have partially shown promising results. The findings of further examinations are expected by autumn 2014. 4. Cardiospa – the experience of the technical testing of the telemetric cardiologic monitoring during balneotherapy in Hévíz The general objective of the project is to provide a partially automated remote medical monitoring for patients who would stand in need of thermal water because of their underlying disease, but cannot take it because of their contraindications of cardiologic nature. The tests were carried out in 51 volunteer patients who do not suffer from heart diseases and it was found that the measuring instrument was able to give appropriate signals during staying in the thermal water and was well tolerated also by the patients. In the next phase of the research it is planned to try the instrument out on patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The above findings motivate the doctors of Hévíz for carrying out further researches, which are hoped to also have positive outcome. Visit Hévíz and try out the proven medicinal therapies of Hévíz!

Many people can be thankful for the thermal water located here for their recovery. We asked Dr. Mándó Zsuzsanna, the medical director of Hévíz Spa and Saint Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases about the secret of the lake: What is so special about the thermal lake? The spring of the lake, which is rich in minerals, arises from a 38 metres deep cave, where tens of thousands of years old hot and cold karst waters mix with each other. The discharge of the lake is 410 l/s, so the water is completely changed every three days, the temperature in winter does not drop below 22 degrees Celsius – so outdoor bathing is also possible in winter -, in summer it even reaches 38 degrees Celsius.Because of its unique environment, the flora and fauna of the lake is very special, the different coloured water lilies planted in the lake are beautiful sights, they even blossom in late autumn. What kind of complaints can effectively be relieved by this water? The medicinal water of Hévíz can mainly be used for musculoskeletal diseases, including cases where follow-up treatments are needed after rheumatic, orthopaedic, musculoskeletal operations and injuries, but it is also perfectly suitable for chronic gynaecological and dermatological diseases as a complementary treatment. The basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy

Thermal water with a temperature of 32-34°C is ideal for the body. The water composition of the thermal water of Hévíz has proven anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Uniquely, the depth of the water allows the muscles to relax completely and the joints to perfectly relieve while swimming/floating in the water.

The effectiveness of the Hévíz medicinal lake is the result of a combination of several therapeutic factors

  • the thermal effect of the water
  • its mass and constant flow
  • its gas and radium emanation content
  • hydrostatic pressure
  • bathing in the open air

Bathing in water at 32-34°C is the most optimal temperature for the body, as it is considered an indifferent temperature, which allows the water to effectively exert its chemical and biological properties and its calming effects on the nervous system.
The water rising from the spring cave keeps the water in constant motion and creates a vertical flow giving the bather a light, floating sensation.

The lake water is rich in gaseous substances, it contains hydrogen sulphide, carbonic acid, methane and radium gases. During bathing, gas bubbles adhere to the skin and are absorbed through it exerting their beneficial effects. The gases that escape from the water are then inhaled and enter the body through the lungs. The sulphur and radium emanations that are released promote cell regeneration, the function of certain endocrine glands, the production of immune substances and play an important role in healing.

In Lake Hévíz, unlike in most thermal waters, you bathe standing, in an upright position. This means that the legs, which are submerged deeper, are under more pressure than the upper parts of the body, which is beneficial for blood circulation: the pressure of the water drives blood from the veins in the lower limbs towards the heart.

The "speciality" of Hévíz

Weight bath is an underwater treatment designed to move the vertebrae of the spine away from each other, thus stretching the spinal column. The stretching allows the discs to return to their original healthy state. Weight bath is completely painless as the buoyancy of the water relaxes the body and the weights stretch the spine very gently. During the treatment, the patient "hangs" in the pool suspended by the neck and/or under the arms while weights are placed on the waist and/or ankles, depending on the condition. The weights are usually 2, 3 or 5 kilograms.

In the weight bath, the weights used can be suspended in 3 different ways:

  • one-point suspension (neck only)
  • two-point suspension (underarm support)
  • three-point suspension (neck and underarm support)

Weights can be placed on the patient under medical instructions but not more than 20 kg at a time.
Treatment time: 20 minutes on average
Water temperature: indifferent (34-35 °C)

Indications:

  • relieving pressure on discs and nerve roots
  • easing of muscle spasms
  • reducing ligament and muscle contractions

Contraindications:

  • cardiovascular complaints
  • high temperature, infectious disease
  • acute musculoskeletal disease
  • slipped vertebrae
  • malignant tumour
  • 6 weeks after disc surgery

In each case, the parameters of the weight-bath treatment, the duration, and the weight to be used are determined by the attending physician. Weight baths should only be used on the advice of a specialist. The treatments are carried out with gradual loads according to the parameters. Patients are suspended through the neck or underarm support.

Weight baths are available in the facilities of the Hévíz Spa and the St. Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, such as the Rheumatology Hospital, the Lake Baths and the Festetics Bathhouse, as well as in the hotels offering the Traditional Hévíz Therapy.

Mud wraps for healing

Hévíz mud is mostly peat of vegetable origin, dark grey and soft. It is unique, it has a special medicinal effect because of the radium salts and reduced sulphur compounds it contains. The medicinal water and mud from the tens of thousands of years old Pannonian Sea, together with complex physiotherapy treatments, are suitable for treating all rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders.

The mud is used in the form of mud wraps in the course of therapies. The mud treatment lasts 20 minutes and is applied to a maximum of six body parts at a time. After the treatment, at least half an hour of rest is recommended.

It is recommended for the following diseases:

  • in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal disorders, in the case of abrasion, calcification, and inflammatory diseases
  • in certain orthopaedic cases
  • in some neurological problems
  • for specific internal and gynaecological diseases

In Hévíz, mud baths can only be carried out on medical advice, but the mud pool of Lake Hévíz can be used with due caution.

Try it!

Pampering and health preservation at the master level: the therapeutic masseurs of Hévíz have found out how to combine the beneficial effects of therapeutic massage and medicinal mud in one treatment. This has become the Hévíz mud massage. Its main advantage is that it can be tried without a doctor's consultation. You only need to discuss with the masseur if there are any contraindications.

Try the cosmetic treatment with Hévíz mud

Today there are several types of cosmetic mud available on the beauty market - including one based on the peat mud of Hévíz. The products made from this mud make the skin velvety and soft. They also have a beneficial effect on skin and connective tissue cell renewal, reduce inflammation and the signs of ageing - as the heat dilates the capillaries, the supply of nutrients and oxygen increases and makes the skin more resistant.

The additional elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy

All you need to know about therapeutic massage

The specialists of Hévíz recommend therapeutic massages as one of the main elements of the traditional treatments - in addition to bathing therapy. Therapeutic massage is an important treatment in physiotherapy. A 10-15 minute bath in thermal water is recommended before the massage. It relaxes the soft tissues and makes the massage more effective.

Therapeutic massages include:

  • Swedish massage,
  • reflex zone (segment, connective tissue, periosteal) massage,
  • lymph massage,
  • sports and refreshing massages.

The general effect of massage is to increase blood and lymphatic circulation. Heart rate and blood pressure change, metabolism speeds up, body temperature and breathing changes, excretion increases and thus detoxification. It also has a positive effect on the nervous system.

Click here to watch videos of several types of therapeutic and wellness massages.

Massages, including therapeutic massages, have a number of contraindications, so it is always necessary to consult a massage therapist before treatment.

Physiotherapy is an umbrella term that includes movement, electro-, and magnetic therapies.

Electrotherapy

In the course of the treatment two electrodes are used to send a low-voltage current to painful areas, and as a result, a slight tingling sensation is felt. Electrotherapy treatments are specifically designed to speed up healing and are excellent for ligament injuries.
Galvanic electrotherapy is good for pain relief and increases blood flow. Low-frequency treatments include ultrasound, magnetic resonance, diadynamic, ionomodulator, sonopuls, stymat, sonodynator, dionine, endomed, or cryotherapy, which is an excellent treatment for fresh joint injuries using cold air.

There are three types of high-frequency treatments: decimetric wave, microwave, short wave. During the treatment, high-frequency machines use the thermal effect of electricity to produce tissue engorgement.

  • Electrotherapies: iontophoresis treatment, Diadynamic, Myotest, Interference treatment, Ultrasound treatment
  • Magnetotherapy - magnetic ring, also known as pulsatron.
  • Light therapies: Sollux, laser, evolite
  • Mechanotherapy (movement therapy):
Passive: massage, therapeutic massage, andActive: physiotherapy, which can be individual or group therapy

Several of the above can be found in our video library to help you understand what they are used for and why.

Movement therapies are an effective way to achieve rapid improvement in musculoskeletal complaints and spinal problems.

During general movement development, the aim is to stimulate brain functions, increase and refine attention and concentration skills. Also, the movement therapy developments applied in Hévíz, such as physiotherapy, targeted spinal exercise, aim at healing, regeneration and prevention. These methods are particularly important in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is of paramount importance in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, as it can effectively help to improve health conditions caused by a sedentary lifestyle.
During individual and group sessions, patients learn the movements that are important for them from qualified therapists, and can later do them at home. The aim is to restore damaged spines and joints, improve the musculoskeletal condition and correct posture.

Spinal exercise

A method used mainly to increase the range of motion of the spinal column and to mobilise the neck and waist. But successful results can be achieved by stretching muscles shortened due to incorrect posture or pain, strengthening muscles around the back, abdomen, hips, and improving coordination.

Underwater gymnastics

It combines the effects of physiotherapy with the healing and beneficial physical properties of water. The movements performed in the water are less strenuous, so they can also be done by people who find traditional gymnastics exhausting.

In addition to the traditional methods listed above, special methods can also be used to treat back problems:

• Schroth therapy
• Manual therapy
• McKenzie method
• Kinesio tape
• Spineliner treatment

Thermal water, not for external use only

Dr Noémi Gyarmati says the following about the use of Hévíz sulphurous thermal water as a drinking cure: “It can be used successfully to increase intestinal function and stomach acid production, in cases of chronic intestinal inflammation, constipation or haemorrhoids. It relieves gall-bladder diseases and helps the healing of respiratory tract infections. Also, it can be used not as a drinking cure but as a gargle for chronic inflammation of the oral mucosa with good results."

Of course, like all medicinal waters, this one has contraindications too, so the consumption of sulphurous water should be avoided in the case of:

• acute inflammation of the liver and biliary tract,
• and increased thyroid function.

In the town, there are drinking fountains with medicinal water that can be used free of charge:

• In the building of the indoor spa of the Hévíz Spa and St. Andrew’s Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, opposite the entrance to Festetics Square (opening hours: 7.00 - 17.00)

Thermal water can also be consumed at the drinking fountains in hotels where thermal water is used in therapy.
The thermal water of Hévíz cannot be bottled, so fresh water can only be consumed at the drinking fountains.

Treatment with water

The physical properties of water are used in water therapies, and their effects are greatly enhanced by treatment with medicinal water. It mostly reduces the recovery time of people suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.
The temperature of the water - cold or hot - produces further opposite effects. In a hot bath, vasodilation occurs, blood pressure decreases and the heartbeat speeds up. In cold water baths, blood vessels constrict, causing blood pressure to rise, heart rate to fall and coronary arteries to constrict.

Types of treatment

In addition to the mud and weight bath treatments listed in the basic elements of the Traditional Hévíz Therapy, the following methods are also included in hydrotherapy, i.e. water treatments:

  • Carbonic acid bath
  • Electric bath
  • Contrast bath therapy
  • Underwater massage
  • Hydroxeur-tub bath
